A tenant-led organization in NYC fighting to preserve Section 9 public housing in the US, the only deeply affordable housing option that remains.

And the most recent examination of Hope 6 found 27.6% of families returned after demolition. nber.org/papers/w34720

Yes - that’s why there are strategies in our housing plan to improve oversight, and MOPT is staffing up to do exactly that. Conditions are bad TODAY and even the best oversight with inadequate federal funding is insufficient to deliver nycha residents what they deserve. (1/2)

Folks should note that HUD has been improving oversight, reporting, tenant protections under RAD since Obama. None of it has stopped increased evictions, rents, displacement and community erosion.

Imagine being so racist and classist that you are excited and inspired by the demolition of #publichousing and creating of unaffordable subsidized housing.
We can pull down a HUGE increase in federal public funding via s8 while retaining nycha ownership, resident leadership and decision making, and major public control. I find this so hopeful and inspiring, and am excited to do more with NYers here. (2/2)

You lease a car from Toyota is the car yours? or Toyota's? Related leases land from NYCHA for 100 years? Is it still "public" or does the lease holder own that land for 100 years? Buildings don't use Section 9 subsidy. Is it still public? Words matter @ceaweaver
Replying to @mfriedrichnyc
NYCHA maintains ownership of the building, and the land. Oversight is significant, as is the major increase in the level of public investment! These are just facts

Cea’s MOPT minion Charlie Dulik was PLEADING with pro demolition Fulton tenants to “advocate for demolition” because the Mamdani admin doesn’t want to be brazen about their support for it. MOPT is totally illegitimate and complicit.

Great question. Can we look at what the results mean for housing? Will this force DSA to protect Section 9 #publichousing? Will this mean DSA won't support demolition? Does this mean Open NY yimby policies pushed by leadership will wither?
Ok I’ll bite… what does this mean

Really upsetting to see organizations that bill themselves as pro-working class encouraging middle & low income ppl to vote yes in favor of ending public input on the issues NYers care about most. I even saw a union saying to vote yes meanwhile if anyone took away their rights to collective bargaining all hell would rightfully break loose. The public must maintain its right to hearings

The story is that the federal program to preserve public housing moves it into Section 8 and often places it under management of corporate landlords, with bad oversight and outcomes for tenants. Maybe you think that's worth the risk, but it’s not clearly "public housing."

Is this DEK meant to deliberately misstate what's going on or did the person who wrote it not understand the story?

NEW: DSA's National Political Committee passed two resolutions tonight regarding Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, setting up processes to potentially force DSA's Los Angeles chapter to rescind its endorsement of her campaign and/or expel her from DSA. Here are copies of the 2 resolutions that passed: Rescinding endorsement: docs.google.com/document/d/1… Expulsion: docs.google.com/document/d/1…

The Mayor seems to be pushing the 5 ballot measures that increase his power and takes from yours and from CBs and just normal people. He's spending govt $ on TV ads, the NYC govt website, link kiosks, and text messages. How is this allowed? BTW, please vote Hell, NO on all 5!

A tenacious group of tenants is fighting a teardown plan in one of Manhattan's most desirable neighborhoods that could spell the end of public housing as we know it? I wrote for @newrepublic about their struggle and the fate of government-run homes in the US.

in 2019, a group of Fulton Houses residents led by @jackieblue2363 went door-to-door at Fulton Houses and collected 635 signatures out of 944 families, for a petition that was against the demolition & privatization. That’s 67%, 2/3rds of NYCHA Fulton heads of households. #DSA
Also — in 2019, a group of Fulton Houses residents led by Jackie Lara @jackieblue2363 went door-to-door at Fulton Houses and collected 635 signatures out of 944 families, for a petition that was against the demolition & privatization. That’s 67%, 2/3rds of Fulton Houses’ heads of households. The petition was overseen by veteran civil rights lawyer Norman Siegel. A lot of folks weren’t around then but tenants at Fulton have documented they did not want demolition or privatization as early as 2019 and folks at @ManhattanBoard4 that were part of the Chelsea Working Group can attest to this as well. Please read more about the petition and the tenants who organized it here: liberationnews.org/nyc-polit… @infopobn @digifigs_1 @fuelgrannie @mfriedrichnyc @katewillett @flushingtenant #nycha
