Across the country, recent conversions of public housing have led to too many bad renovations and failed relocations to ignore. In NYC, independent analysis finds that private management has increased eviction rates and created poor living conditions for many tenants.

There’s tons of evidence of the harm but folks that want to “build us out” of our housing crisis don’t accept that what’s being built isn’t going to fix it. We’re tired of telling them. Open NY can’t be reformed neither can anyone that is calling this NIMBYism.

A tenacious group of tenants is fighting a teardown plan in one of Manhattan's most desirable neighborhoods that could spell the end of public housing as we know it? I wrote for @newrepublic about their struggle and the fate of government-run homes in the US.

AOC: One of the things that I find mind-boggling is that whenever we want to expand health care in this country, Medicare in this country, education, everyone’s first question in Washington is: How are we going to pay for this? Yet every single year, the United States Congress rubber-stamps trillions and trillions of dollars in current and expanded spending without anyone asking at all: How are we going to pay for this? By the way, the Pentagon has continued to fail every audit. They are paying for it with your health care and lack thereof. So it’s about time that we flip the equation and start asking, How can we afford war after war after war?

Section 8 conversion is not public housing. It is private housing with a subsidy.

Nobody in DSA should be calling someone a nimby. Yimby is a right-wing astroturf movement funded by the worst people in the world. It is highly reactionary to buy into their framing
Yes you are a nimby of you oppose new housing construction

Ask public housing residents in Chicago how they feel about tearing down their homes? Many never returned. Handing over a public asset to private developers is the wrong move for NY
the Fulton Elliott Chelsea redevelopment is one of the most promising housing proposals in the country right now. NYC is rebuilding crumbling NYCHA buildings, doubling the density, and using the increased revenue to give every current NYCHA tenant a brand-new permanent home

Ignore the distractions: this is what’s at stake.
I don’t know why this needs to be said but public housing is the only truly permanent and viable form of public housing. The market can’t & won’t build true affordable housing. Tearing down public housing and handing it to private developers is handing over the keys to the bank

god forbid we bring working-class activists who have been politically abandoned into dsa and into socialism through their fight to save their public housing homes from demolition – at Brooklyn, NY

I share none of Paladino’s vile views. I showed up to defend democratic oversight, not audition for her fan club. guilt by association is the best you can muster. I proudly stand with public housing tenants and will continue to fight for them.
Just last fall, one of the leaders of this slate was rallying with Zohran’s Republican challenger and Vickie Paladino, who has called for Zohran to be deported, the “expulsion of Muslims" and posts about throwing leftists out of helicopters. Disappointing!

That’s possible without demolition. It’s called comprehensive modernization.

I think it's good to give every tenant at FEC a newly developed home tbh

🤥 very tenant will have to move, some twice. Over a decade. Land will be leased to private management and developers. No section 9 subsidy will be used= not #publichousing
Replying to @digifigs_1
Most tenants agree with the plan. Nobody is being displaced because most won't have to move during construction and those who do are being moved to other nycha units on the meantime and they all have a right to new lease with same income rules even if they have rent back pay

The Israeli Foreign Ministry is lying. No coordination was required, and we were never told that it was. We were not in a restricted security area. We did not pass any checkpoints. Palestinian farmers do not — and should not — need permits to harvest their own olive fields. But they fear doing so, because the IDF doesn’t protect them from settler violence. We’re trying to model solidarity & co-existence between Jews and Palestinians, and to call attention to the horrors of the occupation. The Israeli government is trying to foment violence between Jews and Palestinians, and to make it impossible for Palestinians to harvest their olive groves, drive on their roads, or live in their homes.
This was not about harvesting olives. It was about harvesting headlines. Brad Lander’s latest stunt is nothing more than a calculated political provocation. Lander traveled to a foreign country, deliberately entered a restricted security area, and participated in an unauthorized activity without the required coordination. What makes this stunt even more outrageous is that his own team contacted Israeli representatives in the United States ahead of his visit and was explicitly informed that proper coordination with the relevant authorities was required. He chose to ignore those instructions. At a time of heightened security tensions, Israeli security forces have a responsibility to protect lives, prevent dangerous incidents, and maintain public order. Had anyone been injured as a result of his reckless political theater, Lander would undoubtedly have been among the first to demand that Israeli authorities intervene and provide protection. Brad Lander came looking for a confrontation. Now he is pretending to be its victim.

Hey @SpeakerMenin: News flash. I’m Jewish, I’m anti Zionist and I don’t own a bank. What is antisemitic is for you to conflate Jews with bankers and Jewishness with genocide.

Meta took down the No Kings organizing page today - the biggest day of protest this fall. They provided zero explanation. It stayed down for the entire afternoon until most of the protests were done. Outrageous. Put this on the January investigation list.

Israeli settlers are out of control, because the Israeli government allows them to be. And while attacks on diplomats or journalists command attention, as they should, this happens unnoticed to Palestinian farmers all the time.
#Breaking: European diplomats, including French and Polish representatives, who went to the West Bank to observe the olive harvest, have been violently assaulted by Israeli settlers.

To be clear: Some facts are neither in dispute nor unclear. Our photographer was clearly marked as Press. She was clearly beaten. These are not partisan or risible statements, but indisputable. We urge a thorough investigation and accountability.
The Prime Minister’s Office: The facts surrounding the confrontation near Abu Falah, during which Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was allegedly assaulted, remain unclear and are under investigation. Israel unequivocally condemns violence against anyone—Jews, Arabs, Christians or journalists. Those responsible will be held accountable. But serious questions remain. Reports indicate some 200 Arabs and far-left activists confronted approximately 40 Israeli youths. Footage shows masked individuals on both sides hurling objects, amid reports of fireworks fired at Jewish youths. Other footage appears to show Levine knocked down and immediately helped to her feet by the same unidentified individual. The investigation must establish the facts, including who initiated the violence. We will not allow disputed incidents to be exploited to demonize the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria. The facts must determine the conclusions. Not the headlines.

It’s not just settlers. It’s Israeli policy at this point.
Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was hospitalized after settlers brutally beat and robbed her while she covered the West Bank olive harvest. The attack drew condemnation from the U.S. Embassy, press freedom groups and Israel's journalists' union. Levine described a growing climate of fear among Palestinian harvesters, while rights groups warned that repeated attacks on journalists continue amid a lack of accountability. | Liza Rozovsky, Matan Golan, and Etan Nechin Footage used courtesy of @infinite_jaz
