I wrote a story about Lego’s pivot to grown-up consumers, and naturally that led me to write about downwardly mobile millennials, the shifting nature of adulthood, and how — in a world where you can’t afford a down payment — a $700 Lego set scratches some version of the same itch

Somewhere in Google's workforce, there's a jaded low-level employee barely hanging on who's been muttering "I told them the AI summary would lead to fewer people clicking on ads and they DIDN'T FUCKING LISTEN" since the stock dropped.
Guaranteed that OpenAI will lobby to make this legally enforceable
They already trained on your data; now they want to create controls so that anyone else training on your data has to follow different rules

"Today, we’re announcing that OpenAI will honor a common signal(opens in a new window) in robots.txt, the file that lets websites express their preferences about the use of their content for foundational generative AI training. This voluntary effort makes it easier for publishers and website operators to communicate the same preference to multiple participating providers at once.
Previously, website operators would identify individual crawlers and maintain separate rules for each and every provider. Having a shared signal across multiple providers reduces that work for operators."

Nice going, everyone.
Alabama passed a law, 138 votes to nothing, that makes every phone user in the state prove their age before downloading a single app.
A 45-year-old who wants a news app has to hand ID to Google first. Existing accounts get no pass either. Every one of them must be verified by October 2027.
Teenagers will need a parent’s sign-off to install Wikipedia, Duolingo or a Bible app, and kids without a parent to ask get locked out completely.
Apple, Google and Amazon’s lobby group has now sued to block it on First Amendment grounds.

“why is everywhere understaffed but we have an unemployment problem?”
Covid taught industries they could function, albeit poorly, with a skeleton crew and there is no economic incentive to do otherwise. That's why enshittification is so rampant at the same time.

Just got a phishing email that Gmail authenticated as Google. DKIM/DMARC passed. I can see a lot of people falling for this one, since it plays to the idea that your account has already been compromised.
Scammer puts the scam in an app-password name, triggers a real Google alert, then forwards the alert email to your email address.
How this attack works, and why it’s convincing:
1. The trick: The attacker puts the threatening text and shortened URL into an app password’s customizable name on another account. Google incorporates that text into a real security notification and signs the email.
2. The delivery: That notification is forwarded through another mailbox to the victim. In this message, Gmail still recorded passing Google DKIM and DMARC authentication.
3. What makes it convincing: The Google sender, signature, branding, and “Check activity” button are legitimate. The suspected attacker-supplied text appears inside the same trusted-looking template, using a deadline to push you toward its separate link.
4. The giveaway: Both the notification and its genuine Google button refer to someone else’s account. The “permanent access after 24 hours” claim is false; app passwords can be revoked.
Be careful out there folks!

Calling it now.
AI is going to usher in a whole new era of software development. I’m calling it Software as a Service.
People will want to use these tools but they’ll realize they don’t want to spend the time to maintain and update them over time.
This will create a whole new category of businesses and entrepreneurs that can take on that task for businesses that would rather work on their core products.
AI is changing everything. This is a whole new paradigm of thinking about the way we interact with software.

The Indian security company that used 4 as a private key also lacks basic account security.
To sign into your account, you enter your email and receive a 4 digit code.
There are no limits on login attempts. You can try all 10,000 combinations.
The Indian government uses this.
eMudhra login to download customer's certs can be cracked
Their 1FA login generates a OTP & sends it. It also sends a RSA public key to front end
They haven't rate limited checks, so you can offline brute force 0 to 9999 encrypted with public key & find the OTP

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes people owning RAM is wasteful, and that it belongs in data centers instead.
"From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."
