"Sometimes, the greatest obstacle to scientific progress is not a lack of evidence, but our unwillingness to accept what the evidence reveals."
Same thoughts about airborne transmission prevention guidance
The doctors were supposed to save lives. Instead, their hands were killing patients.
Vienna, 1847. Women giving birth were dying of puerperal fever at alarming rates. Strangely, mortality was considerably higher in the maternity ward staffed by doctors than in the one attended by midwives.
Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis wanted to understand why.
The crucial clue came when a colleague died after accidentally cutting himself during an autopsy. His symptoms resembled those of women dying from puerperal fever.
Semmelweis realised that doctors were unknowingly transferring infectious material from cadavers to women in labour.
His revolutionary solution? Disinfect your hands with chlorinated lime before examining patients.
The results were extraordinary. Maternal mortality, which had sometimes exceeded 10%, fell to approximately 1.3% in 1848.
That year, he extended his disinfection protocol to instruments coming into contact with patients and systematically documented mortality rates over time. His observations provided compelling quantitative evidence that puerperal fever could largely be prevented.
Yet many physicians rejected his conclusions. Accepting them meant acknowledging that doctors themselves had been responsible for countless deaths.
Although former students helped communicate his findings abroad, Semmelweis delayed publishing his definitive work until 1861: The Aetiology, Concept and Prophylaxis of Childbed Fever.
The book failed to convince much of the medical establishment.
His final years were tragic. After developing serious behavioural and psychological disturbances of uncertain origin, he was admitted to a psychiatric institution in Vienna in July 1865.
Just two weeks later, on 13 August, he died aged 47 from a severe infection associated with a gangrenous wound on his right hand. The circumstances surrounding that injury remain disputed.
The man who had fought to prevent fatal infections had himself died from one.
Semmelweis never identified the microorganisms responsible. That understanding would emerge through the work of Pasteur and others.
But he had demonstrated something fundamental: infections could be prevented by interrupting their transmission.
Today, his name also lives on in the Semmelweis reflex: our tendency to reject evidence that challenges established beliefs.
Sometimes, the greatest obstacle to scientific progress is not a lack of evidence, but our unwillingness to accept what the evidence reveals.

Now some people are asking if I'm not afraid of catching even minor infections if I stop wearing FFP3 masks. My answer is that at least I hadn't been sick until then, and who knows what I might have caught without them. Then they shut up.

Sad that people will find out later if I'm right or not.
But what is unquestionable is that we need to invest in improved air quality in schools & hospitals and have healthcare workers use the right PPE.
Those things make the biggest immediate impact.
Don't shut up about it.
