For fourteen years, everyone thought U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant John Chapman died in the first two minutes on top of a freezing 10,000-foot mountain in Afghanistan. Then modern image technology unlocked the thermal camera footage recorded by a Predator drone circling high in the clouds on March 4, 2002. When Pentagon investigators watched the enhanced screen, hardened combat generals broke down in tears. Because the video proved that after everyone else had left the mountain peak, John Chapman woke up alone in the snow and fought an entire army by himself. That night on the peak of Takur Ghar, thirty-six-year-old Chapman, a father of two little girls from Connecticut, had charged uphill through thigh-deep snow alone to silence an enemy bunker and save his pinned-down team. For more than an hour, he fought from inside the bunker, killing an enemy fighter in bare-handed close combat when they tried to rush him. Then, at dawn, Chapman heard the heavy thump of rotor blades in the mist. An American Chinook helicopter carrying twenty-three U.S. Army Rangers was flying straight toward the peak to rescue him, right into the sights of an enemy rocket launcher. Chapman knew that if he stayed safe inside the rock bunker, those twenty-three young Americans in the helicopter would be blown out of the sky. So on the thermal video, investigators watched John Chapman deliberately climb out of the bunker, stand up tall in the open snow, and fire into the enemy positions to draw every machine gun on the mountain onto his own chest. He died in the snow as the sun rose, shielding the incoming helicopter with his life. True bushido is what a warrior does when he thinks nobody will ever know his story. The sky was watching, John. “LOOK AT THESE MEN! OPEN THE DAMN GATE BEFORE I TEAR IT DOWN MYSELF!” Ground Zero, Manhattan. September 2001. The Twin Towers had collapsed into a 16-acre mountain of burning steel and toxic ash. 343 FDNY firefighters were dead beneath the rubble. Armed soldiers had locked down the entire perimeter with steel fences. Strict federal security order: NO FOREIGN TEAMS ALLOWED INSIDE THE PILE. Japanese rescue firefighters had just landed at JFK. They hadn't been sent by a politician. They had received a desperate message from their FDNY brother, Lieutenant Mickey Kross, who had trained with them in Japan: “My brothers are buried. Please help us.” Those Japanese firefighters took vacation days, emptied their personal bank accounts to buy plane tickets, and flew 7,000 miles across the Pacific with their rescue gear on their backs. At the Ground Zero checkpoint, armed guards blocked their path: “Turn around. Foreigners are not cleared to enter.” The Japanese rescuers stood frozen in the ash, heartbroken. Then Mickey Kross walked out of the smoke. Mickey had barely survived being buried alive inside the North Tower stairwell on 9/11. His turnout coat was black with soot. His eyes were bloodshot. When he saw his Japanese brothers stopped behind a chain-link fence, Mickey lost his mind. He stormed up to the checkpoint, grabbed the steel gate with his bare hands, and roared at the guards: “DO YOU KNOW WHO THESE MEN ARE?! THEY FLEW ACROSS THE OCEAN ON THEIR OWN DIME TO DIG OUT OUR DEAD BROTHERS! YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT RULES WHILE MY MEN ARE UNDER THAT STEEL?! THEY ARE OUR BROTHERS! OPEN THIS DAMN GATE RIGHT NOW!” The guards stepped back. The chains dropped. For days, American and Japanese firefighters crawled side by side through burning steel, breathing the same ash, weeping the same tears. When they finally parted at the edge of the pit, Mickey pulled the Japanese leader into a bone-crushing hug and whispered: “If Japan ever bleeds, we will come for you.” Ten years later, on March 11, 2011, Japan bled. In Hokkaido, Northern Japan, 300 elite rescue troops and 90 heavy disaster vehicles of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (5th Brigade) were engines-running, ready to save lives in tsunami-ravaged Tohoku. There was just one devastating problem: The tsunami had crippled the civilian ferries and ports across the Tsugaru Strait. Three hundred Japanese rescuers and their heavy trucks were trapped on an island while thousands of survivors were dying in the mud just across the water. Never in history had Japanese military troops and vehicles been transported inside a United States Navy warship into an active operation. Diplomats said the legal paperwork alone would take weeks. Commander Johnapon, captain of the dock landing ship USS Tortuga, didn't have weeks. People were freezing NOW. The USS Tortuga cranked its boilers to full power and steamed straight through icy seas to Tomakomai Port in Hokkaido. It dropped its massive steel stern gate. And for the first time since two nations fought each other across the Pacific, American sailors waved olive-drab Japanese military trucks straight into the heart of a US warship! In record time, ninety Japanese rescue vehicles and nearly three hundred Japanese soldiers packed every square foot of the Tortuga's well deck. And how did your American sailors treat those Japanese troops during the rough, freezing voyage south? Your sailors gave up their own mess tables so the Japanese soldiers could eat hot meals first. In the hallways of the ship, young American seamen and Japanese soldiers who didn't share a single word of language swapped unit patches off their chests and gripped each other's forearms like blood brothers. When the steel ramp dropped at Ominato, those 90 trucks roared straight off the American ship and charged into the disaster zone to save thousands. Sixty-six years earlier, our grandfathers met across the Pacific in fire and blood. In 2011, their grandsons stood inside the same steel hull, united to save human lives. The American media never covered what happened beneath the black ice of Hachinohe. Late March 2011. Northern Japan was freezing to death. Civilian salvage companies said it was suicide to dive. Your Navy divers strapped on heavy lead weights and jumped straight into the black abyss. Unable to see their own hands in front of their masks, those American boys crawled across the freezing sea floor by touch alone. Their fingers went numb inside thick rubber gloves as they wrapped heavy steel chains around sunken ships and jagged wreckage in the dark. Twelve hours a day. Shivering uncontrollably between dives, drinking hot water just to feel their lips again, and diving right back down. In days, they hauled 280 cubic yards of lethal steel out of the channel. They opened the port. And when the first massive fuel tanker glided safely into Hachinohe to bring heat to a million freezing Japanese families, your divers stood on the icy deck, covered in black grease, cheering like kids. No cameras were watching at the bottom of that freezing harbor. They risked drowning in the dark so our children wouldn't freeze in the night. Happy 250th, America. July 17, 2022. Greenwood Park Mall, Indiana. A mass shooter armed with an assault rifle and 100+ rounds opened fire in the food court. Families dove under tables in terror. Blood on the tile floor.
