MAGA and RedState reactionaries are NOT simply a TRUMP phenomenon.
Rather, the GOP/Party of Plutocrats assiduously sowed a politics of division, distrust & fear, cultivating & misusing confused white nativists.
Grifter Trump adeptly seized a thoroughly corrupt/cynical party.
I want to show y’all something pretty wild. It’s just a short history lesson, bear with me.
Let’s go back to 1948.
President Harry Truman was pushing the Democratic Party toward civil rights and challenging the system of racial segregation that had dominated the South for generations. That didn’t sit well with the party’s Southern segregationists.
They weren’t willing to accept a Democratic Party moving toward racial equality. So they revolted. They walked out of the Democratic convention and formed the States’ Rights Democratic Party, known as the Dixiecrats, led by Strom Thurmond.
These were the defenders of Jim Crow, segregation and white supremacy. They weren’t leaving because the Democratic Party had become too liberal on economics. They were leaving because it was beginning to challenge the racial hierarchy they wanted to preserve.
The groundwork for that transition was already underway. Republicans recognized the opportunity. In 1964, Barry Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act and carried five Southern states. Strom Thurmond, once the face of the Dixiecrat revolt, switched to the Republican Party.
Then came Nixon’s Southern Strategy.
The segregationists didn’t simply disappear. Their political movement evolved. Its language changed. Its tactics changed. Its political home changed.
The realignment took decades, but the direction was unmistakable. And here we are, decades later, watching familiar political tactics unfold again.
The weaponization of race, religion, fear and resentment. The targeting of minorities. The politics of division. The effort to convince voters that their problems are caused by their neighbors rather than those holding power.
History doesn’t repeat itself perfectly. But it leaves fingerprints. And here’s a little historical irony worth remembering. Strom Thurmond held South Carolina’s Senate seat for decades after switching parties in 1964. Lindsey Graham succeeded him in that very same seat in 2003. Graham held it until his death in July 2026.
On November 3, Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Republican Darline Graham, Lindsey’s sister, to win that seat. When Andrews takes office in January, that Senate seat will be back in Democratic hands.
The Dixiecrats lost the Democratic Party. They didn’t abandon the politics that created them. Many of them eventually found a new political home. They didn’t abandon their ideology. They carried it into the Republican Party.
And perhaps we’re finally watching the closing chapter of that history being written.
And if you want to understand why this history matters today, read the article on the comments.

You should note that ICE agent Kent Blacklidge lied about Leo's arrest, claiming that Leo obstructed him. Never mind that it was all recorded on video, so we knew that was a lie. Now we know that Blacklidge may be the "worst of the worst," but @DHSgov has left up its tweet.

ICE HSI agent Kent Blacklidge who racially profiled and tackled US citizen Leo Venegas while trespassing at his worksite (the first of Leo's three illegal detainments) was just arrested for rape and child sex crimes. The agent's duties had included child sex investigations.
ICE wrestled Alabama worker to the ground & detain him for hours—he is a U.S. citizen.
Young man was begging & shouting, "I am a U.S. citizen"—but that didn't stop ICE agents from dragging him off to a detention center.
Not following due process hurts us all—and our economy.
His family said that ICE agents did release him after he was finally given the opportunity to prove he was a U.S. citizen—but only after many hours.
This construction site in Foley, Alabama was forced to shut down for at least the day. How many other businesses were affected?

DEM FLIP: Democrat Katy Padilla Stout has defeated Republican Brandon Herrera, flipping #TX23 blue.
In 2025, Texas Republicans redrew their congressional map in an attempt to rig the midterms. With this victory, they have failed.
Congratulations, Rep-elect Padilla Stout!

What a glorious massacre. Just a tidal wave of Republican blood in the gutters. El Sayed wins, Jackson wins, Texas flips, AIPAC lost, Musk lost, the big money lost despite the Dem brand being a joke and despite Schumer and Jefferies. Hot fresh blood they prescribe for decline.

To avoid a repeat of last night’s shellacking in the 2026 midterms, Republicans should:
quit covering for pedophiles
put America before Israel
put farmers before corporations
quit funding wars abroad
reduce spending to control inflation
quit attacking independent voices

Quick reminder that the 2025 election was a bellweather that got excused, downplayed, or just ignored. When you betray core base promises (Epstein, no new wars) & attack dissatisfied supporters, you demoralize voters you need into flipping against you or just sitting it out.
