JD Vance scapegoating immigrants as usual. Illegal immigrants contribute $26 billion annually in Social Security taxes. Yet they are ineligible for benefits and no investigation has turned up widespread fraudulent Social Security benefits collected by them.
.@VP: "If you are encouraging illegal aliens to sign up for Social Security and steal Social Security benefits, you're not protecting Social Security, you're destroying it — so cut that shit out and be honest about your intentions." 💯

Once again, Trump and Vought have violated the law by sending Congress more illegal pocket rescissions. Republicans need to stand up to Trump and affirm that cancelling funding Congress has approved is ILLEGAL.

The law is not a suggestion, and the President is not a king.

🚨These numbers are a FIVE-ALARM fire for every member of Congress: a 1% jump in interest rates adds $39 TRILLION to our national debt. But there's a path forward—it starts with reversing Republicans’ tax breaks for billionaires. budget.senate.gov/ranking-me…

Two points here: 1.) IRA prescription drug provisions not saving as much as projected is mostly the result of Medicare Part D reforms on stuff like coinsurance costing more than projected as opposed to, say, drug negotiations not working. (Author of this makes this clear btw)
It turns out the 2022 IRA is saving us nothing on Medicare and has ended up with Part D drug spending growth soaring past the CBO estimate: city-journal.org/article/med…

He's not kidding. Trump has a pattern of withholding federal funding based on states that did or didn't vote for Republicans. It's all right here:
Trump: "We spent more than $2 billion in FEMA funding. You're waiting for some additional funding. I'm gonna get that to you. Now if Michael loses, I'm not sending it." Crowd: *groans*

This is egregiously wrong--it's trying to pass off a values choice as a mathematical certainty. You absolutely can fix Social Security's shortfall w/ payroll tax increases alone. Whether you *should* is something people w/ different values can debate, but the headline is false.

Despite their lectures on fiscal responsibility, Republicans repeatedly ran up debt with endless wars and tax cuts for the rich. Stabilizing our debt is an essential step to investing in what families really want: housing, health care, and education.
5% a year on $40T in debt is a very large number.

The deficit is essentially tied for 2nd as the Republicans' worst issue after health care. It seems like a $4.5 trillion tax cut partially financed by cuts to health care/SNAP and partially financed by deficits with interest rates now soaring was a bad idea.

Let’s review. In February 2025 Trump floated $5,000 DOGE dividends. Didn’t happen. In November 2025, he said we’d be getting $2,000 tariff dividends. Didn’t happen. Now in September 2026 we’re being promised another $5,000 tariff dividend. Not gonna happen.
Trump: "Only I can make this promise to you: If the Republicans win the House and Senate, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000"

In April, Russ Vought promised to follow the law and provide debt and deficit projections in OMB’s mid-session review. The review is out, but the projections are nowhere to be found. He doesn’t want to confirm what we already know: Trump’s Big, Ugly Bill blew up the deficit.
MERKLEY: You didn't include deficit numbers in the budget. Why not? VOUGHT: We didn't want to confuse the country. MERKLEY: The deficit can be extracted if you do the math—it's $2.2 TRILLION in 2027. Perhaps you didn't include it because you didn't want to draw attention to it.

NEW OP-ED from @SenJeffMerkley: We need to get serious about getting our deficits under control. Doing so means that we will be able to grow our economy, invest for the future and reduce costs for families by investing in the programs they need to thrive. ms.now/opinion/debt-deficit-…

IRS lost 27% of its exam staff from FY 2024-FY 2025 Revenue decreased 25% An obvious fact: If you get rid of auditors, you raise less money from audits. Winners are tax cheats, losers are those who are playing by the rules tigta.gov/sites/default/file…

Can't really believe I'm retweeting Massie but he his right about this. The OBBB and the TCJA before that (and the Bush Tax Cuts before that) are prime causes of the fiscal gap. Can't (or shouldn't) very well vote for those and then complain when debt rises.
If you voted for the Big Beautiful Bill, please don’t get on here and express righteous indignation that the debt is now $40 trillion. Anyone with a room temperature IQ knew that cutting taxes and increasing spending was going to balloon the deficit.

$40 trillion is a staggering milestone, but it didn’t happen by accident. Republican presidents have repeatedly chosen to borrow for large tax cuts and major military commitments rather than pay for them. /1

If we want to get control of the national debt, we must end the Republican strategy of passing massive tax breaks for billionaires and spending trillions on forever wars.
