IF I WAS CAUGHT STEALING AND FLOWERY TOLD ME TO GET OUT I'D GENUINELY NEVER SHOW MY FACE IN TOWN AGAIN
I work at a video game store and my manager dressed up as flowery for Halloween and we caught someone trying to steal and got this generational banger from the security cameras

I cannot stress enough that AO3 won't exist forever. Smth will happen to it and millions upon millions of works are going to be lost bc of it and those few fanfics saved for personal use are going to be the only remnants of AO3 and it's work. Just saying.......

The reason I say this is because TO ME the mark of a really good fanfic is one that cannot actually be reskinned as an original story. The writing and characterization are usually so good that you can see it easily fitting within the canon of the source material.
I have never read a fanfic that I thought should be a published book. I *have* read fanfic by writers I think deserve a book deal because their writing is that good, however. And that fundamental difference is key.

I am genuinely baffled by the current discourse because 1) the download button has been there forever and 2) both epub and pdf version not only give author full credit but link to the original work in the file.

They trample and many see the consequences with DMCA notices and having their work taken down. And in more extreme cases as we have seen here, they get their work apprehended at conventions by customs ( we saw it happen in Japan Expo this year, and another convention)
Fanartists literally trample all over the illegal grey area when it comes to profiting off of ip fan works, esp con vending, and i think more writers should be less hesitant in doing so as well

The discourse is loud. It never was this loud when ao3 was just a sneaky little website for us to post our sneaky little stories on. Now it's such a big name that they put it in the New York Magazine. I miss when it was just a sneaky little website.

this is rooted in the ancient and wicked customs of ff.net and lj writers who would hold fic chapters hostage until enough people wrote an in-depth bullet-pointed comment addressing every plot point with endless praise. normal people have left this behind
ao3 authors have gone and lost their minds because wtf do you mean you're only going to post half a chapter on ao3 from now on and for the rest of the story people will have to dm you. are we really this bored? no shame in just no longer posting at all

the site is fucking down. the site is fucking down and here is a golden opportunity for people to DISCOVER YOUR WORK and FIND YOUR ACCOUNT AND THE REST OF IT WHEN THE SITE IS BACK UP AND YOU WANT TO CALL PEOPLE FUCKING LOOTERS?
I’m sorry but acting like people are stealing from you for downloading fics are insane. If you’re a real fanfic writer, you’re in it for the love of the game and you’re not policing how people are enjoying your writing. If you’re in it for the kudos, this isn’t the hobby for you.

i'm muting now bc my phone has not stopped buzzing some people have reasonable concerns. dm the archivist if you want your work taken down. have a conversation about modern fandom culture, talk TO your readers. but do not compare this to robbery or assault.

people WILL be searching up your accounts once the site is up to read more of your work. the people who saved the work to begin with also probably did. and just dm them if you want your stuff removed. the only thing i have to plug is this: twitch.tv/eerieroads

“Fan artists can make merch and take comms but fic writers can’t” WE LITERALLY CAN I know 30-50 people who take writing comms you can physically print and sell fics you just have to keep it on the dl so you don’t get sued to hell and back we’ve BEEN doing this

I'm not going to get into the discourse as to whether it's okay to post an author's work on gdocs without permission, but this? NOT okay. Do NOT repost an author's work onto another platform, at that point it just becomes theft!

GOG wants to bring physical PC games back. The idea is to let players buy boxed versions of games directly from their GOG library and have them delivered to their homes. “We need to think about logistics. We need to think about storage,” The company would also need approval from publishers to produce and sell physical copies. GOG has been discussing the idea for years, but there are still plenty of challenges to overcome. “I really hope that at some point we will be able to do it,”

If someone made a website or google doc to archive artists fanart so fandoms could find their artwork easily (AND LIKE THE GOOGLE DOC WITH CREDIT SO YOU CAN FIND THE OG ARTIST) THAT would be the comparison.

People comparing the saved google doc of fics to reposting artists work 🫩 It’s not the same thing. An equivalent would be if somebody were reposting your fics on tumblr. One is strictly for archive purposes the other is somebody taking ur work for their own gain.
