I have to train a lot of young translators (some of them doing their first translation work ever) and the biggest sign that they're new is how literal they try to be. Interpretation of the text is a sign of experience and quality.

And I work in a field where you have to be as close to literal as possible for a multitude of reasons, and even then there is a ton of interpretation we have to do because that's how language works. Suggesting otherwise is literally just ignorance.
