Super Saturday afternoon film on the Great Action TV channel (Freeview 42): “Khartoum” (1966), with Charlton Heston, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson - and, of course, Nigel Green (with side-whiskers!). An old-fashioned colonial history film, probably one of the last, up there with “Zulu” (1964) and “55 Days at Peking” (1963). Seeing Olivier blacked up as the Mahdi I’m reminded of Guinness blacked up as Prince Faisal in “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962). None of these films would be produced today, mores the pity…

I had joined the anti-independence group “Better Together” (later named “Just Say No”) in March of that year after a shock Sunday Times poll showed that the “Yes” campaign were close to winning. So shocked was I that my country, my nation, Great Britain, might be torn apart that I joined the “No” campaign immediately.
