NYC spends $107,033 per student at a single middle school. Why?
Let's examine how school spending has gotten out of control at MS371 and why small schools in the city need to merge or close to provide better resources to everyone, including those attending these schools. 🧵

How bad is administrative bloat in higher ed?
At MIT, the “student body has grown by 8% and its faculty by 9% since the mid-1980s. By comparison, the tally of administrators jumped by 189%.”

FYI, the "advanced" students are just kids who are on grade level. That's how far the bar has moved

Obviously this stuff is easy to make fun of but there’s a more serious question here of why are university bureaucracies in charge of this shit? Gigantic chunks of the *very expensive* administrative enterprise is busy with make-work slop that ranges from pointless to bizarre.

NEW: Haverford Professor Guangtian Ha
has been arrested and charged with cyberstalking a Jewish colleague.
Posing as a MAGA anon on X, he allegedly messaged another Haverford professor around 50 times between October 2025 and May 2026.
In addition to posting vile antisemitic messages (see below), he allegedly posted his colleague’s “home address, infant child's name, a photograph of the family's mailbox, countless antisemitic slurs and threats, and reference to real-time observation of their home.”
The target’s wife twice moved out of the home with their three children because they were so terrified.
Ha is a member of Faculty for Justice in Palestine.
He has called complaints about antisemitism on campus “Zionist witch hunts.”
Originally from China, he is an associate professor of religion at Haverford who studies Islam in China.
He holds a PhD in anthropology from Columbia. His dissertation is entitled, “Religion of the Father: Islam, Gender, and Politics of Ethnicity in Late Socialism.”
He won the 2023 Clifford Geertz Prize in the Anthropology of Religion for his book, The Sound of Salvation: Voice, Gender, and the Sufi Mediascape in China.
He is “charged with one count of cyberstalking pursuant to 18 U.S.C. §
2261A(2). The statutory maximum for cyberstalking is five years' imprisonment, three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and a $100 special assessment.”
Here are some of the messages he posted (brace yourself):
“Jew, get the fuck out of my country”
“Jew pig, get the fuck out of Lower Merion”
“If jews are so special then they should also be placed in special camps and receive special treatments”
“LM jews are going to have it big time, jew. Remember this. You scums have had it too easy. Goyim are taking America back, blood-guzzling demons.”
“@[Victim 1] Eliminate the
jewish cockroaches. Exterminate the jewish state. [Victim 1], you will have nowhere to go. Your family has no future in the US. Give it another 10 years, and you shall see a true holocaust.”
“@[Victim 1] Fat jew, leave lower merion.”
“@[Victim 1] Jew, watch your [Victim I's minor son's true name]. There shall be a sign.”
After the victim took security precautions: “@[Victim 1] The goyim have woken up, jew. Run. Flee. Leave. Blurring your home on google map and installing a security camera next to your mailbox won't help.”
“[Victim 1], the jewish state will stop existing, whether you like it or not, which is why as an Israeli zio jew you want to recreate america in 'iSrAeL's' image. This won't work. You and your family have no future here. Homeless dogs jews will once again become, if you do survive.”
“That's right[Victim 1]The end of American jews is close. Let's start with the jews in Lower Merion. Watch out jewish nigga.”
“[is] that blood, [Victim 1]? We know jews are blood-sucking demons. Only the libtard niggas [...] will protect you. But soon we are going to make sure you have no place to hide, fat rat.”
“Nothing wrong to hate jews. We started to decline the moment we stopped hating, eradicating and expelling jews. Babylonians knew, the Romans knew, the Spaniards knew. American jews have been exposed. Fuck anti-Zionism. HH [i.e., “Heil Hitler”].”
Haverford College has placed Ha on administrative leave and barred him from campus. His information has been wiped from the college’s website.

I got really annoyed that so many stories about the "Cornell 7" case don't link to the underlying court documents.
So I compiled the key filings from Jane Doe's civil suit and from a separate suit brought by one of the accused.

The school Najya now attends is 33% white. The holy grail of NYC schools, Stuyvesant High, is 17% white.
Your magazine and your reporter are decades out of date to describe these schools as 'majority white.' It calls into question your entire analysis of what ails NYC schools.

In all the talk about NHJ sending her child to a high-poverty school, I think it’s been under-mentioned: she could have chosen her neighborhood school. She did not. She hand-picked a school with the demographics, amenities, and faculty she wanted, then used private tutoring.

I have many thoughts on the Nikole Hannah-Jones story, especially having attended the kind of schools she sent her daughter to, but if we're looking for takeaways, here's a simple one. When an expert in education so thoroughly demonstrates a jarring and near complete lack of expertise in the act of getting an education for her own daughter, we should stop taking advice from her on curriculum, instruction, and all other fads disguised as wisdom she offers. That seems like the least we could do. Her daughter's personal struggle, which is indeed sympathetic, wasn't much of a teachable moment for her, as she doesn't seem to have updated any of her priors (and actually fudges funding facts, so as not to disrupt the narrative of under-resourced schools). But it should be a teachable moment for us, about the outsized influence of a scholar who claims to know better than anyone what her daughter would be up against in the school to which she chose to send her, but was inexplicably surprised and left her daughter completely unprepared for it.

Whether intentional or not, perhaps the silver lining in NHJ’s article will spur the outrage necessary to get NYC education on track.
Getting rid of standardized testing isn’t the way and would have helped her realized much sooner how off track her child was. The same goes for @NYSEDNews eliminating the Regents exams — throwing the baby out with the bath water isn’t the solution and their appalling plan should be stopped.
Reading @nhannahjones’s latest piece cut me to the bone.
My son attends a public school without gifted & talented, dual-language programs, or a million-dollar PTA.
I chose this school. And still, I lie awake wondering whether, in the pursuit of equity, I’m sacrificing my own son.
My consolation was that he would see the intention behind my choice and hold his head high.
I know now I may have been living in a fantasy.

This is a problem.
Not mentioned in Nikole Hannah-Jones’ bombshell piece: Current @doechancellor Kamar Samuels served as Brooklyn’s District 13 superintendent in 2019 to 2022, overseeing the middle school that the writer’s daughter complained had killed her hopes of getting into a specialized high school. Samuels also oversaw struggling PS. 307, where Hannah-Jones now regrets sending her daughter. Then-PS 307 principal, Stephanie Carroll, is now the DOE’s Director of Literacy, and the school still shows abysmal reading and math scores well below the city average.
