Reminder that the benefits to boosters kick in fast (within days) and same with that first shot if you haven’t been vaccinated (~10 days). Go this week! (If you’ve done both already, convince one person on Monday to get their vaccine or booster.)
2 major vaccination milestones today: - 6 million kids ages 5-11 with their first dose - 60 million Americans boosted It's not too late to get your vaccine. There are over 54,000 sites with vaccines in stock right now. Find your nearest site at vaccines.gov.

I tweeted this as a preprint, now accepted. Infectious virus is found in small aerosols (<5 microns) in exhaled breath. More viral RNA is in small aerosols than large. Alpha variant yielded 10-100x more viral RNA in exhaled breath. My note: probably even higher with Delta. /1
Infectious SARS-CoV-2 in Exhaled Aerosols academic.oup.com/cid/advance… SARS2 evolving toward ⬆️ aerosol generation; loose-fitting 😷=sig. but only modest source control. Until vacc rates very high, layered controls: ventilation & tight-fitting masks and respirators are necessary.

80% of deaths occurred in this age group. Even in ‘low vaccinated’ states like MO the over 65s are 82% 1-dose. (And in MA where I am it’s an incredible 97%!) I agree with @AbraarKaran that we must do our part globally.
One of the most important statistics in this pandemic- % vaccinated above age 65 The US is sitting at an incredible 80% here (and 89% w/ at least one dose) We *must* facilitate the same for other countries #covid19 nytimes.com/interactive/2021…

Anecdotal, but still quite reassuring - at a party with 30 attendees and a superspreading event, 6 people didn't get COVID. All of them were vaccinated, all 24 of the people who got sick were unvaccinated abc.net.au/news/2021-06-28/v…

Last summer, I realized motels were a safer option than sharing the lobby, hallway, & elevator with others. Almost all motel rooms have their own HVAC unit, not connected to others. Air out the room for 15 min before unmasking (exhaust fan on, door open). nytimes.com/2021/06/16/trave…

Grateful for the work of @ProfEmilyOster and team on continuing to fill this gap: ""You may be wondering why this is a private effort, why it’s not something being done in a more formal way. I do not have a great answer, other than to say we are doing it because others are not."

A meditation garden within the walls of a prison. A sculpture garden built by at-risk youth. A therapeutic healing garden for hospital nurses. These are just a few examples of urban green spaces that have come to life over the years. buff.ly/3wWL7lU

When @linseymarr and I started preparing an editorial on airborne back in early March 2020, this was one line of evidence. —> CDC saying droplets from coughs/sneezes but... —> by definition when asymptomatic you are not coughing or sneezing onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
"The abundance of this speech-generated #aerosol, combined with its high viral load in pre- and asymptomatic individuals, strongly implicates airborne transmission of #SARSCoV2 through speech as the primary contributor to its rapid spread" #airborne onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

More evidence that high rates of vaccination in adults reduces cases in unvaccinated kids. Now seen this in Israel and UK. Expect to see this is US, as well.

CDC guidance caught me by surprise, and my initial reaction was supportive, but the more I think about it, I wish they had said, "Let's do this on July 1. If you aren't vaccinated yet, this is your chance to go do it." Give people time to plan.

How is the fall even a question at this point? And, if your school is closed NOW you are failing - the guidance is there, the $ is there, the science is there, the vaccines for teachers are there, the damages to kids continue to accrue.

I don't know how to be more direct than this. COVID is inhaled in aerosols in the air by people who are simply speaking. Proper protection needs to be provided to those who spend time indoors around people including grocery stores, dental offices, meat packing, the list goes on.

Wonderful guidance from @WHO on ventilation. Here are a couple of pages for non-residential settings. All the things we've been talking about: minimum 10 L/s/person, open doors & windows for cross-ventilation, use exhaust fans, filtration.
The @WHO just issued this great new tool in the overall strategy to reduce COVID-19. 👇🏻 Roadmap to improve and ensure good indoor ventilation in the context of COVID-19 apps.who.int/iris/handle/106…
