Dems would be insane not to take the deal
SCOOP: @IBEW, whose members align with utilities, is endorsing the Senate's bipartisan permitting reform bill.
"The IBEW strongly supports BAAJA... that will unlock development across the energy industry," the union said in a statement shared with me

How this works is that we're either going to pass BAAJA now, or we're not going to get anything. Jared knows this, but he's in the pocket of groups who make money off enviro lawsuits and prefers nothing be done. He's not trying to improve the bill, he's trying to kill it.

They should investigate the ignoring of the law that banned TikTok by Trump and Apple, Google, Oracle and other firms

It's fascinating how the Trump administration is literally pro-vice. Like waluigi social conservatism.
Significant escalation via the @CFTC, which has ordered prediction markets to stop geofencing states within 30 days, or explain why they can’t.
Puts Kalshi in precarious spot, on a collision course with court orders in Michigan, Nevada & Washington, where its sports contracts are currently banned.

"We should make it hard for the government to build anything because otherwise it might build bad things" isn't an especially progressive governing philosophy imo

Americans spoke clearly this week that they want their elected representatives focused on affordability. We have legislation that would reduce household electricity bills by billions of dollars by making it easier to build clean energy projects. Let's get it done and pass BAAJA.

Democrats should offer a gerrymandering ban, and should be willing to compromise in good faith to get it done. It's such a corrosive negative sum game.

They're all obsessed with Israel. It's a mental disease that afflicts a large fraction of our country's political class.

i listened to this podcast and it helped me understand why people listen to Zitron despite his miserable track record. he knows a fair amount of stuff! the conclusions he draws from it are usually wrong, but he can tell you like, what broadcom is, or how a GPU works. (he did not know what "API" stood for, which is kind of funny, but ultimately not disqualifying.)
it reminds me a lot of young-earth creationism. the individual creationists i've met all know more about carbon dating techniques or whatever than the average layperson, so it sounds impressive until you realize how many mental gymnastics they're doing to assemble their (often correct) object-level facts into a totally incoherent worldview.
“Is this just a big circle jerk?” Jon welcomes Ed Zitron (@edzitron), host of the podcast Better Offline, to make sense of the financial house of cards propping up AI and big tech. New pod out now!

When it comes energy policy, I think Democrats should trust the solar industry over the people who keep suing to stop the solar industry from building things.
Replying to @SiegelScribe
The prelim analysis I obtained found passing BAAJA would lead to 167 gigawatts of more solar being deployed, 51% less natural gas capacity being added from 2028-2035, and power sector carbon emissions falling 20% during that period. Read it here punchbowl.news/baaja-impact-…

Like many in tax world, I’ve been dismayed at how bipartisan the tax revolt has become. Exempting more people and income from taxes. How do we combat these bad ideas? Fund the tax police again to restore credibility. My guest piece for @SearchlightInst. open.substack.com/pub/search…

Just looked at the Louisiana Ballot Initatives and there are TWO measures offering property tax relief for seniors on the ballot.
Who is behind this? How much more generational theft do the Boomers plan on doing? Mandatory year of indentured servitude for college grads next?

Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

Perhaps the single strongest argument to ending the filibuster, imo, is this.
Yes, it would surely result in much more partisan legislation on both sides, for good and ill. But at least the American people would get what they voted for.
I do have to point out here that while Trump's restructuring of America around a supreme presidency is more extreme than everything we've ever seen in our lifetimes, it's not an aberration.
If anything, it's the logical conclusion of decades of Congress declining in power, as dysfunction has made it unable to do its basic job.
Even before Trump, we have seen decades of both the President and the Supreme Court stepping in and basically assuming more and more indirect legislative powers because Congress is too partisan and gridlocked to pass major legislation anymore. Our lawmakers are constantly locked in petty squabbles. They mostly just pass overbloated omnibus bills that do a thousand little things for each special interest and nothing of consequence for the people. Half of all the new senators and congressmen these days seem to retire after one or two terms not out of some principled self-term-limiting, but out of a soul-crushing realization that nothing they're doing matters.
It's not hard to understand why there's a certain group of voters that likes the idea of a president who just steps in and declares, I'll get this done since no one else is doing it. It's the same reason that in the late Roman Republic, plenty of the citizenry were excited about the country being reorganized as the Roman Empire. Because the system was so clearly broken that one guy just stepping in and getting things done seemed like a breath of fresh air.

I have a lot of respect for @RoKhanna , but I want to make two points: First, why the line of attack he’s pushing here is wrong on the merits, and second, why it would be a big strategic blunder for Democrats to validate it. 🧵
