Bloomberg: OpenAI plans to buy AI chips from Google, adding a direct rival’s processors to its compute build-out. Richard Ho, who runs OpenAI’s chip team, previously worked on Google’s TPUs, linking OpenAI’s in-house effort to the hardware it now plans to buy. Oracle will also offer TPUs through its cloud, so Google’s chips are spreading to outside buyers and rival clouds as an alternative to Nvidia GPUs.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell if Dario is simply naĆÆve or if he is dishonest He is extremely intelligent, so it’s hard to believe he is naĆÆve, but regulation has always favored incumbents This idea that you can support regulation that slows down big companies, but somehow favors smaller ones (as long as they don’t get too big) does nothing to change that fact As soon as a company becomes any kind of threat to anthropic, they will be neutered by the same regulation This is simply a fancy way to preserve their competitive advantage And any regulation in an industry introduces additional costs which make it harder for new entrants So I’m back to thinking that he is dishonest, because he is certainly not unintelligent
1/2 Thanks Gavin for an especially thoughtful exchange. I don't usually spend much time on social media but I wanted to engage here because it really brings out the heart of an important conversation. First, on regulation, I think that ā€œeither concentrate it in the hands of a chosen few companies and politicians via regulation or distribute it widelyā€ is a false choice.Ā  I know that there’s a sort of Silicon Valley shorthand where regulation = regulatory capture = concentration of power, but I’ve always found this to be an overly simplified picture of the world.Ā  Many people outside this bubble think of regulation as something that constrains corporate power and benefits ordinary people.Ā  I don’t necessarily agree with that perspective either, rather I think it’s complicated and really depends on what the ā€œregulationā€ consists of.Ā  But in particular I think that those in the ā€œregulation = regulatory capture = concentration of powerā€ frame often underrate the decentralizing power of objective and fair institutional processes.Ā  A crude analogy is that the formal court system can sometimes feel stuffy and elitist, but it does a much better job of defending the rights of vulnerable individuals than the alternative, mob justice.Ā  At their best, institutions can vest power in ideas rather than people, and thereby decentralize that power. This is why Anthropic has always made its policy proposals very carefully.Ā  We try very hard to make proposals that disadvantage (slow down) frontier AI companies while *advantaging* smaller competitors.Ā  California’s SB53 (which we supported), and even the much-maligned SB 1047 (which we were ambivalent on), completely exempt any company below a certain amount of revenue or model training costs from being covered at all (it was $500M for SB 53, lower for 1047 but we objected to that).Ā  More recently the testing process we’ve advocated for at CAISI and the White House involves more rigorous tests for frontier models than off-frontier models — something that differentially advantages challengers.Ā  Similarly, the ā€œPacing the Frontierā€ letter envisions (or at least Anthropic’s preferred implementation of it envisions) modulating the pace of the very best models while not constraining those who are catching up.Ā  This hurts the business interests of the frontier labs and helps challengers, including open-weights! Overall my view is that AI is *structurally* a technology that tends to concentrate power, for reasons that have nothing to do with regulation (more to do with the extreme implications of the scaling laws).Ā  Open-weights do help some with this but are nowhere near a sufficient solution because they simply shift the concentration somewhat to those with the most compute and chips (which are roughly the frontier labs plus maybe hardware providers).Ā  By contrast I think the right ā€œrules of the roadā€ can simultaneously (a) address AI’s cyber/bio/alignment risks, (b) institutionally constrain the power of the frontier AI companies, and (c) leave room for open-weights models while also addressing the specific risks that they bring. BTW I do not think that the events of the last few months have ā€œfailed to result in [my] preferred regulatory pathā€.Ā  The approach that the Trump administration is reported to be taking — pre-deployment testing for frontier models, and also testing of open-weights models when they get closer to the frontier — is one that I am very supportive of, though of course I have to see the details to be sure.Ā  I am also supportive of Demis Hassabis’ ideas around a FINRA-like entity.Ā  This contrasts with six months ago when most of the industry was still pushing for preemption of all state regulation and no apparent federal approach either.

This is unreal. I'm really sad for people. My DMs are full of heartbreak, and not one is from a Swan client. If I can help, I will. If Swan can help, we will. The industry and the community will get stronger because of this. Eyes on the prize: Monetary Independence.

.@AnthropicAI has filed a lawsuit against @Abnormal claiming we copied their brand to mislead security customers, and they are asking for ā€œall revenues, earnings and profitsā€ This is obviously not true. They don’t own every A/slash design in AI cybersecurity, and they don’t get to turn a logo dispute into a claim on Abnormal’s entire business. It would be easier to concede quietly. But Abnormal was built on trust, innovation, and intellectual honesty. Values are what you do when tested (especially when inconvenient) Our behavioral security platform and our AI models are ours. Everything meaningful about Abnormal was built the hard way: the technology, the customer relationships, and the trust. We earned that trust by protecting customers, and we will defend it. My blog post about it (link below):

This is silly by Elon. He thinks that just because we’ve criminalised speech, logged non-crime hate incidents, rolled out mass surveillance, expanded the Investigatory Powers Act, added facial recognition, censored the internet, eroded away jury trials, tried a bit of pre-crime policing, cracked down on protests, toughened the Public Order Act, pushed digital ID, centralised identity systems, let quangos run government, politicised policing and quietly sidelined democratic oversight... ....that we’re living in a police state. Calm down mate. Government is keeping us safe from ourselves.
The UK is a police state

Nothing would be cooler than Maxis and large OG Bitcoin whales blowing up JPMorgan in a Bank Run buying MSTR en-masse, and exposing their naked shorts. As much as it's likely a complete BS situation/story/opportunity, it would be epic.

Elon said he’s 100% sure they’ve solved FSD, and it’s funny because you know at this point a lot of people don’t listen to him when he says this, because many are so conditioned to hearing ā€œit’s almost readyā€ without it ending up happening. But if you’re one of the few sitting in these cars now testing 14, you have that ā€œholy shit, my team is about to win the superbowlā€ excitement inside of you. 14.1 has comfort issues, but you’re sitting there realizing every single drive that you don’t need to do anything ever. Even when you do take over to avoid comfort related stuff, it’s really optional and not safety related. And it seems like 14.2 has addressed all of these things. V13 was flawless almost always, but with the launch of V14, it has just become so crystal clear that the software is safer than the average human. So crystal clear that your overall probability of collision is lower when it’s active. Already felt that way in 13, but with a smooth 14, this feeling will be mainstream. It’s just so undeniable after you’ve gotten a few thousand miles under your belt. I can’t believe they did it. This is the most insane shit ever. I’ve never seen such a mind-blowing, life-saving, world changing tech so close to completion before the majority of the public even has a clue it exists at all. It really feels like I’m Gary Hobson from the show Early Edition, walking around Chicago with tomorrow’s newspaper šŸ˜‚

My latest essay is about bitvm. I outline how two bitvm firms plan to use a very expensive mitigation of the "data availability problem" in their sidechains, and I propose an improvement based on one of the lightning network's best cost-saving features. telegra.ph/A-forthcoming-pro…

You're being played by people who want regulatory capture. They are scaring everyone with dubious studies so that open source models are regulated out of existence.

Adam took his time and honestly evaluated claims from both sides. He has been charged with ā€œflip-floppingā€ but in truth, went back to first principles, reconstructed arguments, and ā€œverified, not trustedā€. The conclusion is what any honest bitcoiner already knows.

The objective is fine, but you have to have a plausible solution, which has not been found. As you might imagine controlling spam is hard. And Bitcoin already has the best solution: block size limit, proof of work and dynamic fees.

Yes, there are many points of agreement. Let us focus on them. Here are five for starters. Can we agree on these? If not, can you provide an alternative? 1. Sola Node Scriptura — Each node operator must interpret the protocol directly; education replaces edict. 2. Expose Defaults to Daylight — Policy must be declared and debated, not embedded. 3. Separate Authority from Infallibility — Maintainers are servants, not vicars. 4. Reform by Persuasion, Not Partition — Purify doctrine; don’t proliferate forks. 5. Resist the AI Magisterium — Let machines assist, never absolve. @uglyoldgoat1 xitter.gq/UglyOldGoat1/status/19…

I just sharply revised this article. One must be very careful using AI, but it is an extremely useful tool. A big shout-out to @constructdisrup, who richly deserve a much wider following.

NEWS: Tesla has urged the Trump administration not to repeal vehicle emissions standards or the long-standing U.S. finding that greenhouse gas emissions endanger human health. Tesla said the EPA proposal "would give a pass to engine and vehicle manufacturers for all measurement, control, and reporting of GHG emissions for any highway engine and vehicle."
