Recently, I spoke at the South Australian Business Index and had a conversation with Premier Peter Malinauskas. Someone described South Australia as a small state. That didn't sit well with my demographic mind. Almost two million people live in South Australia. Entire historical empires ruled over fewer people! But which empire would be the best match for SA? And what about the other Australian states and territories? Whenever a silly thought like this pops into my head, I write a column about it and call it work. The result is my latest column, a thoroughly unscientific tour of Australia's historical empires, complete with premiers reimagined as emperors and kings: buff.ly/wPf9DsV

The LNP gotcha about golf club sewerage failed miserably, and they soon returned to shouting during answers. The Speaker "It's not even funny .. We don't need snide remarks - just remember why we're here" But the LNP have no idea. Just a clueless rabble now. #auspol #qt

Inflation rises to 4.3%. If increasing interest rates is supposed to control inflation. After SIXTEEN rate rises, inflation is up, down, up again.... PROOF: INTEREST RATES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH, NOR ARE ABLE TO CONTROL, INFLATION. It's time to ditch this failed theory. #auspol

Same dudes who protested on our streets with hangman’s nooses, pissed on our Shrine, spat in the faces of our health care workers & booed at Welcome to Country on Anzac Days now outraged by a group of kids protesting against Pauline Hanson on Remembrance Day. Cry me a river.

China's CO₂ emissions appear to have peaked, despite continued economic growth. The world's largest emitter is also driving the electrification revolution that will end our dependence on fossil fuels. The scale of this disruption is extraordinary. 👇

I wish more people understood this.
50 years of privatisation = a FAR BIGGER STATE with WAY MORE BUREAUCRACY bc privatisation introduces competition and therefore commercial secrecy and legal disputes + more state admin is needed to try to coordinate fragmented state contracts handed to the private sector

Angus Taylor tried to play tough on migration by using a Murdoch front page 🙄 Tony Burke calls out Angus after Labor agreed to a letter from him, but the LNP then voted against the legislation. Angus copies One Nation, but is spineless when leadership is needed. #qt #auspol

It shouldn't be controversial. We're a good 50-60 years behind where we need to be with rail infrastructure in Melbourne. And it's embarrassing that the city is mired in naysaying and fretful provincialism. We're 5.5m going on 9m. Let's grow up and live inside reality.

Great to see Auckland's Central rail link opened. I first began researching Auckland's transport with Paul Mees (RIP) in the early 2000s and our work, and Paul's advocacy, influenced the direction of policy. What a difference 25 years makes. 1/2 rnz.co.nz/news/regions/13536…

Those nasty facts! For the 4 Chalmers budgets, the cumulate balance is a surplus of $6 billion. The 2 surpluses were bigger than the 2 deficits. Just saying.
To all those One Nation and Coalition types who have condemned Labor for its government deficits, the most recent four years are Labor’s (small surpluses and deficits as a proportion of GDP) while the deep red ones are Coalition deficits.
