Over the past 5 years we've worked with hundreds of SMBs building sites, running SEO campaigns and PPC campaigns. My friend @SullyBusiness asked me to put together a checklist for a new service business. This is it: Our tech & marketing stack for SMBs 🧵👇

This space is getting hammered, we're doing our best and doing it well but the truth is - the economy matters a great deal.

I don’t know why I find this comment so funny but I every time I reread it I laugh. Thanks @charliewrich

I agree, there is no going back. But two counter points 1/ This isn't uber eats. China can't ship me my hamburger. They sure can provide me with a cheaper model. 2/ Everyone (myself included) that doesn't hit limits just let's it rip on the default model. It's incredibly inefficient. I'd be a lot more selective if I had to pay for it.
The funny thing about AI, they will rachet up the prices and you will pay. "I can no longer obey; I have tasted command, and I have not lost the taste for it." - Napoleon Bonaparte

Between the two of them of my kids got 22 (two were split last night) full sized chocolate bars last night. I can still remember the one house that reliably gave out full size bars as a kid.

- It must be something that can make $300k+/year - It should be something where he can take 6-8+ weeks of vacation per year (he likes to travel) Keep the job man.
My buddy has $500,000 he wants to spend on a business to get out of his W2 that he hates. His main requirements are: - It must be something that can make $300k+/year - It needs to replace his W2 within 2-3 years - It can be operated by a third party (he doesn't want to do the day-to-day) - It should be something where he can take 6-8+ weeks of vacation per year (he likes to travel) What ideas would you have for him? He's been looking at logistics companies, short-term rentals, and laundromats. I'm afraid to give him any real advice in case it goes bad.

I have a referral source that always tell me I don’t charge enough. He’s definitely right. I’ll often take over contracts where the previous co was charging 2-3x what we do for similar (or often worse) deliverables and results. But there is a lot to be said for feeling good about the value one provides. I don’t and never will subscribe to “charge as much as you possibly can”.
This will give you the worst life possible

Same argument applies to growth. I think it’s amazing when entrepreneurs build a huge business. That’s incredible and I’m rooting for them. But it doesn’t mean everyone should go that route.

This is where things are going. Branded Search + Keyword. AI Overview. In another few months, good chance we see "brand name search" > AI overview all the time as well. We saw a pretty big drop for most local businesses last month and this was a big part of that.

We started thinking through what migrating all of our client sites over to Claude > Github > Cloudflare would look like. I worked through this and yes "it's not that hard", but it's more complicated than Wordpress. The main upside was you can just make changes in Claude, turns out you can just do that in WP too.
Just spent a few hours learning to deploy my first repo to github Using the terminal Setting up hosting environments Customizing security protocols Bro you guys are retarded.. Wordpress isn't going anywhere 🤣

“Local seo isn’t competitive”. In certain markets this is true. In major home services + major metro this is a brain dead take. You don’t think that 8 figure HVAC co or that 100m junk franchise hasn’t figured out that digital marketing is important?

This is pretty well bang on. Doubly true for local seo > if you rank well in the map pack and organically the odds of showing up well in the LLMs are exceptionally high.
How to become an AEO expert in less than 24 hours: 1. Get hired by a brand that already has good SEO, reviews, and trust 2. Run prompts that show their existing visibility 3. Take screenshots 4. Tell everyone how good you are at AEO on LinkedIn BOOM.... AEO expert status in less than 24 hours. Anyway: Don't take credit for what's given to you 🙃

I was today’s years old when I found out that that “rockets” are called “smarties” in the US. Chalk textured sugar are in their own tier (above S).

In case you're wondering if you should add an auto blogger to your SMB's website. This feels about right.

With Claude I can literally do anything. Eight weeks later. "Hey man can you check the SEO health on my site, we started getting a lot fewer leads for [X]". Yah no kidding, Claude torpedo your rankings and your site looks like garbage since you unleashed it. All you had to do was not touch the 12 months of good work.

One of our clients tips one of our web devs from the PH quite regularly (sourced by @SullyBusiness) I just found out this has been happening for over a year.

AI vs AGI framed perfectly.
Silicon Valley keeps building me a husband when what I really want is a wife lol I don't want an agent that only does one-off, random tasks that are nice but not life-changing: booking flights, making dinner reservations, or buying tickets I want an AI wife who knows what’s on the family calendar, remembers there’s a birthday party Saturday and we haven’t bought a gift then sends me options, realizes we’re almost out of diapers and buys them, knows which bills are coming up, remembers someone needs a dentist appointment and books it, figures out what the hell we’re eating all week and what we need from the grocery store, and generally keeps track of the 47 things that need to happen before anyone else even realizes they need to happen. So, who's building me an AI wife that carries the mental load instead of an AI husband that waits for me to give it a chore??

I’ve seen this graph so many times on my timeline. 2% of households pay for AI. “We’re so early”. Assuming I’m interpreting this correctly. What are you doing with AI that would require a paid account outside of work (where you have access to a paid account)?
98% of US households aren't paying for AI yet More charts in State of Markets II: a16z.news/p/state-of-markets…

When you're 1 of 5 local businesses in a city you don't need to spam your domain with three egregiously spammy tactics. No sense in permanently destroying a perfectly good domain...

We're opening two new Google Business Pages for a client. One of them is under a new brand they created. Built a website, let it sit for a few months. The other is an additional page under their existing brand. This one's office is actually more legit (it's in a different city and it's a very real office). Guess which one got auto approved and which one we've been submitting documents & videos for, taking forever to get approved.
