Two things are simultaneously true: Korra is a gorgeous piece of animation willing to tackle heavy themes in an interesting way, and the fact that it had to reinvent itself every season meant that it never could achieve the consistent quality of ATLA.
I agree that Korra (both the character & series) received a disproportionate amount of bad faith & often misogynistic hate, but I really don't like this revisionism where we pretend there were never any legitimate critiques of the show or that "aang glazers" are an actual problem

i guess that makes sense if you imagine that what's being advocated for is "the state immediately seizes all newborns and sends them to The Factory" rather than "children should have strong, actionable legal and social recourse to protect themselves from abusive caregivers"
one of the things that concerns me about certain strands of family abolitionism is that they seem to reject the idea that whoever gave nine months of their life and took serious health risks to birth a child should probably have first claim to primary caregiver if they want it

What a wildly incorrect talking point. The desire to get rid of Schumer and Jeffries has nothing to do with the margins of the election. It has everything to do with them being the wrong people to meet this moment and being uninterested in delivering for the working class.
it's very obvious that a lot of people had a whole anti jeffries for speaker and anti schumer for majority leader campaigns ready to go assuming a much more modest democratic win...

In this vital moment, please remember: any politician proposing "body cameras" for ICE or police violence is not a serious person. The history here is one of the greatest achievements in copaganda in modern history:
THREAD. I didn't fully know what to expect when I started digging into over a decade of records, statements, financial data, and other information about police body cameras. I suspected it to be troubling, but what I found shocked even me.

This is one of the reasons the Netero fight hits so hard, because suddenly Meruem becomes a shonen protagonist trying to build a better world that refuses to change, and he manages to lose because, for all his power, he's still naive about exactly what humans are capable of.
The Chimera Ant Arc at its core is really a reflection of the good and bad of humanity through the lens of another species rapidly assimilating our sentience, ideologies and hypocrisies and destroying our leverage to rule

Loving the Bojack discourse on my timeline, and not disputing the OT, but Diane not wanting to be on antidepressants is one of my least favorite bits from the final season. It genuinely seems to come out of nowhere to me.
Replying to @TownTattle
The whole arc of Diane going on anti-depressants, learning to accept the sincere love she’s being given by her boyfriend, and letting go of the need to be the socially conscious journalist is her “doing the work”.

guys justin briner gets tortured everyday listening to people make their own deku impressions i feel like he can have a free pass to say anything
During the heat of an intense political season, I made a comment on social media that I now regret. I apologize and I hope that the temperature can come down for all of us.

Muslim names be like SERVANT OF THE MERCIFUL and Christians have shit like Michael
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Michael comes from the Hebrew phrase mī kāʼēl, which translates to "Who is like God?". ancestry.com/first-name-mea… biblehub.com/topical/m/mich… biblegateway.com/resources/ency…

gossip from sources in R senate campaigns, lots of blame but one theme emerging: the Million Charlie Kirks were a catastrophe. half of them hatched "unsouled" and slid sideways into hell before they could vote; the rest were "webs of blood and tooth" who largely went third-party

Since Bojack is on my timeline
So this thread got me thinking about the absolute brilliance of the tightrope Bojack walks (both the character and the show), and the near-perfection of its final season. How it shows how trauma warps up, and how that trauma is not an excuse for the hurt we inflict on others. 🧵

Still marvel at the utter heartbreaking perfection of Season 7, which sets up a genuine redemption arc for Bojack and then has him slowly destroy every chance he has to actually follow it. What a masterpiece.
Rewatching Bojack Horseman again and MAN. Now THAT is a show that understands character arcs, good writing, plot payoffs, rewarding people who stuck with it, top tier acting and directing, and how to use their Netflix budget to the full extent. Perfection.

Been rewatching Korra and the Unalaq/Vaatu stuff is SO HALF-BAKED. I actually think you can solve a lot of this by having the audience explicitly aware of Unalaq's evil immediately (a la Scar in the Lion King): Korra wpuld end up looking less stupid thanks to dramatic irony.

And this is a problem, because outside of the Red Lotus, Korra never really gets a villain worthy of her story. Amon is great, but his influence ends after Season 1: Kuvira, Unalaq, and Vaatu are great concepts with serious flaws in execution.

Unironically one of my favorite things about Mako. The writers have no idea what to do with him but every time he locks in he goes so unbelievably hard
you can call mako a homewrecker bad boyfriend cheater bitch boy but he was NOT useless!!!

The Legend of Korra will have me rolling around in frustration at some of the choices in writing while also leaving me completely and entirely distraught at its stunning otherwordly godly animation and life changing musical score, this sht means something to me man

When Mamdani won in New York City, Matthew and others were quick to remind us that his brand of politics couldn't win in places not as blue. Now that El-Sayed has proven that wrong, they are finding other ways to downplay what happened for progressives.
I take the lesson that moderate Democrats like James Talarico, Josh Turek, and Annie Andrews who break with the establishment on key policy issues do better than establishmentarians.

I've been thinking about this excellent thread from @iiiiwanttolive for over a year now. I don't disagree with it, but I do think one of the reasons One Piece is so good is precisely BECAUSE of its fuzzy powerscaling: it makes it almost uniquely appealing among shonen. 1/25
#OnePiece 🧵 𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞: 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐰𝐤𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐃𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞'𝐬 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠

Blackbeard notes this, too: he nearly dies so many times, but he keeps clawing after the world he wants, and he encourages Luffy to do the same. In the world of One Piece, nothing can be truly said to impossible. 24/25

And that's part of what makes One Piece great: that no matter how ridiculous the gap should be, a character might win, no matter what powerscaling logic says. Or, to paraphrase one of the greats: as long as the character is alive and willing to try, they have a chance. 25/25
