Exclusive: “The instant I saw the picture my mouth fell open and my pulse began to race.” So wrote James Watson in The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA, his controversial account of how he and Francis Crick deciphered the structure of DNA in 1953. The image, now known as photograph 51, showed an elegant, symmetrical pattern of spots formed by x-rays diffracted from strands of DNA—the fingerprint of the molecule’s helical structure. Rosalind Franklin, an x-ray crystallographer, had produced the image in the spring of 1952. But Watson’s 1968 book, amid other slights and sexist language directed at Franklin, implied the flash of insight was his alone. Popular accounts still routinely suggest Franklin missed the significance of the photo. She never had a chance to challenge Watson’s dismissive narrative; she died of cancer in 1958, a decade before his memoir was released and became a bestseller. But a new analysis of her notes on another x-ray image, which she made just days earlier using the same DNA sample, offers a firm rebuttal. Learn more: scim.ag/4s7yQsV

Fires are smoldering in Indonesia, which is in a severe and widespread drought. Some of these are tropical peatland fires, which burn slowly, release higher amounts of air pollution, and are notoriously difficult to extinguish.

The latest data confirms what we’ve long feared🔥🌳🌎 Forest fires are becoming more widespread and destructive around the globe. Updated data from researchers at the University of Maryland shows that between 2001 and 2025 forest fires now burn over twice as much tree cover each year as they did two decades ago, and more than three times as much in the tropics. Unpack what’s behind these concerning trends and examine some of the places most impacted by increasing forest fires➡️ go.wri.org/tcl-update-x

A millennium-long record from Galápagos corals suggests that El Niño is intensifying as the planet warms, with ENSO variability in the eastern Pacific roughly 37% higher than during the preindustrial era. The findings in Science suggest that climate change is already amplifying one of the world’s most important sources of extreme weather, with potentially growing risks to ecosystems, infrastructure, and human societies. A deep dive into the capacity for trees to physiologically adapt to drought reaches a sobering conclusion: Trees have little ability to change their inner hydraulic systems to accommodate increasing levels of drought as the climate changes. In PNAS: ow.ly/cSpy50ZFVIF

I've added a new interactive warming map to my Climate Dashboard, powered by the Berkeley Earth high-res (~25 km resolution) dataset. Click anywhere on the planet to see how temperatures have changed since 1850, and download data for that location in csv form.
