Pakistan's real safety net in politics is that politicians have inter married into different political parties
Clans are rarely out of power
If one is out , the other is in
It's not just politicians.
Military , judiciary , bureaucracy are classes in their own

Since 2014, communal violence is changing in India: it was eruptive, instrumental & collective; it is now more routinised, ethnocidal & individual. My take on this change.

To understand how the Election Commission of India could get away with the SIR, one needs to assess the evolution of the Supreme Court in India, something Prannv Dhawan and I have done recently.

I am deeply honoured to receive the 2026 Right Livelihood Award which is also known as an alternative to Nobel Prize in Human Rights.
I want to thank everyone who has congratulated me, called me, written to me, celebrated with me, and shared this happiness today. I may not be able to reply to everyone individually right now, but please know how much your love and kindness mean to me.
The journey behind this recognition has also left me deeply burned out. Sometimes, when something good happens, instead of immediately feeling happy, old memories come back. I remember the difficult years, the losses, the fear, the pressure, and everything that came with this work. Happiness and sadness sometimes arrive together for me.
But today, I am genuinely happy, and I am especially grateful to everyone who made this day feel like a celebration.
For now, my hands have unfortunately stopped working properly again. This has happened to me from time to time since 2019, and sometimes it takes a few days, or even a week, for me to recover. So if I am slow in replying, please forgive me.
I am still trying to read your messages, feel your love, and thank you all in whatever way I can.
This recognition means a lot to me, but what means even more today is knowing how many people have stood by me, believed in me, and shared both the difficult and beautiful moments of this journey.
Thank you, from my heart.

Some fact-checking for Mr. Shahzad Akbar. Mr. Ashrafi was SAPM on Religious Harmony to then PM Imran Khan in 2020, around the same time Akbar was Adviser to the Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior. Of course, Ashrafi's influence in particular circles can be blamed on multiple versions of hybrid setups in Pakistan as he has held influential roles in PTI, PMLN, PPP and Musharraf-era governments. And the Western embassies have also engaged with him on interfaith issues.
Wrote this about him in 2020 for @nayadaurpk_urdu:

I spoke to @memphisbarker for @Telegraph's investigation into the "Blasphemy Business Gang", about Hassan Muawiya's hate campaign and how his brother Tahir Ashrafi, a British-Pakistani national and Chairman of the Ulema Council, has enabled Muawiya's decade-long abuse of the blasphemy law to target religious minorities especially the Ahmadiyya and now trap even more victims in fabricated cases. It is almost like these men have impunity for ruining lives.

🚨 BREAKING
A major scandal has surfaced in Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the attestation of citizens’ documents.
An internal inquiry report obtained by Geo News alleges that Rs12 billion was illegally collected from citizens in one year through unlawful channels for document attestation.
The four-member committee, headed by DG Audit & Inspection Dr Ahmed Ali Sarohi, identified a “mafia” allegedly involved in collecting money from the public.
According to the report:
-Citizens were allegedly charged up to Rs800,000 for using illegal channels for document attestation.
-The report names and records statements of officials allegedly linked to the network.
-An official working in the Foreign Secretary’s Office is among those named.
-DGs of different wings, a former Additional Secretary and former diplomats are also mentioned.
-Officials say a private courier company allegedly had links with a Ministry official.
-The report was sent to the Foreign Secretary’s Office in July but, according to sources, was not forwarded to NAB or another investigative agency.
-Despite the committee’s recommendations, several officials allegedly linked to the matter were later posted abroad.
Geo News sent questions to the Foreign Office spokesperson. No response has been received so far - my story - @MIshaqDar50
