🚨🇮🇱 WATCH: Arab Israelis are riding camels, horses, and donkeys to their local polling stations in the Negev. The turnout today has been INSANE, and Netanyahu has been particularly outspoken about how concerned he is with high Arab voter turnout. When the camels start showing up, things aren't looking good for Bibi... 😂 Writer: Michael

On this Israeli election day, I’d recommend reading this extraordinary @haaretzcom interview with billionaire Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress and once one of Benjamin Netanyahu’s closest confidants. One of Lauder’s most striking conclusions: “I realized at the end of the day that Israel really didn't want peace, but they wanted dominance.” This is coming from someone who helped launch Netanyahu’s political career, introduced him to powerful figures in American politics and media, and secretly negotiated with Hafez al-Assad and Rafik Hariri on his behalf in the late 1990s. In one of the interview’s biggest revelations, Lauder says Netanyahu agreed to a comprehensive peace deal with Syria and Lebanon, including withdrawal from the Golan Heights, but ultimately refused to sign it for political reasons. “He chose politics over peace. He put his political future before the deal.” Now 82, Lauder describes his profound disillusionment with Israel’s direction. After decades of supporting Israeli and Jewish institutions, he has sold his Tel Aviv apartment, given away his Be’er Sheva property, and says he has no intention of returning to Israel. He warns that Netanyahu’s dependence on figures like Ben-Gvir and Smotrich is damaging Israel, alienating diaspora Jews and eroding support in Washington. The interview is also full of fascinating details about Lauder’s role in Netanyahu’s political rise. The two became close friends in the 1980s, when Netanyahu was Israel’s ambassador to the UN, speaking almost daily at times. Lauder says he introduced Netanyahu to speech coach Lilyan Wilder to improve his public speaking and, crucially, to Republican strategist Arthur Finkelstein, who would become instrumental in Netanyahu’s electoral success. When Netanyahu left New York to pursue a political career in Israel, Lauder threw him a farewell party attended by some of the most influential figures in American media and politics, including Rupert Murdoch and the head of the New York Times. Lauder recalls opening doors for Netanyahu and helping him cultivate the relationships that would underpin his rise to power. What makes this interview so revealing is that Lauder is no longtime critic of Israel. He had been a committed Zionist, a Republican power broker, and a man who spent decades financing Jewish institutions, cultivating relationships with Arab leaders, and pursuing diplomatic openings on Israel’s behalf. A fascinating read 👇 haaretz.com/israel-news/elec…

🚨🇮🇱 Tuesday may be the most consequential election in Israel's history, and the 100,000 people in Hostages Square tonight know why: the world has stopped giving Israel the benefit of the doubt The rally was about an inquiry into Oct. 7 that Netanyahu has blocked for three years, and the voices were bereaved fathers and freed hostages. But the subtext in the square was bigger than one commission. It was the sense, said plainly by a first-time voter to AFP, that Israel has to change how the world sees it, and that Tuesday is the last clean chance to do that from the inside. Years of war in Gaza, Lebanon and now Iran have done something no enemy managed: they turned ordinary public opinion in Israel's closest ally against it. AIPAC quit endorsing candidates this week because its name costs votes. A Democrat leading the Michigan Senate race calls Israel a friend who takes your money and starts your fights, and his numbers WENT UP. The prime minister is campaigning on finishing Iran "together" with a president at 31% whose own voters are done with the war. Fair or not, that bill doesn't stop at Israel's border. And as unfair as it is... Jews in Paris, London and on American campuses get judged for decisions made in Jerusalem that they had no part in, and they’re the ones who absorb the hostility when Israel’s conduct goes wrong. The world's message has been delivered loudly enough: change how you fight in Gaza, change how you treat Lebanon, change the assumption that Washington will always write the check. A Netanyahu win promises the “job to finish” with Iran and another year of the same verdict from the same crowds abroad, and that verdict falls on Jews who never cast a ballot in Israel. Tuesday is the day Israelis decide what the rest of the Jewish world has to answer for next. Source: Times of Israel / AFP

On @Reuters article below 👇, don’t spend too much time wondering why the cost of living of Lebanese people continues to deteriorate, and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future as risk of war heightens further. There is one main reason behind the double digit $ inflation that is sweeping through people’s lives and livelihood: Inflation in #Lebanon is the cost of delayed restructuring 👇(see article below) . Everything else is a corollary to it. substack.com/@thealiamoub/no… When the central bank is insolvent and the treasury is in default, the President, PM, government and the mighty Lord, can’t do much about inflation at > 17%, unless they restore the capacity of the State to use monetary and fiscal policy to protect society. Time to tell the Lebanese the truth & move ahead with an equitable restructuring that ensures accountability and builds a solid base for recovery. In the new Middle East, no one cares about bailing out Lebanon’s rotten state and those who capture it; not in war times nor in peace times.

Israeli settlements have massively expanded in the occupied West Bank under the current Israeli government – along with a major spike in violent attacks on Palestinians. @JDiamond1 reports on how the government has allowed this and whether elections could prompt any change.

🇺🇸 AI probably won’t wipe out humanity. The real danger may be much closer. Gary Marcus thinks the AI debate is obsessing over the wrong nightmare. He puts the probability of AI-driven human extinction in the next several years at “very close to zero.” But that does not make him relaxed about AI. Marcus separates the risk into three categories: P-Doom, extinction; P-Catastrophe, events capable of killing huge numbers of people; and P-Dystopia, the gradual destruction of privacy, reliable information and democratic institutions. “Don’t panic about P-Doom, but worry a lot about P-Catastrophe and P-Dystopia.” The catastrophe scenario is disturbingly mundane. An AI hallucination contaminates an intelligence report. A military acts on false information. An automated system disrupts an electrical grid. A malicious actor uses cheap AI agents to manufacture propaganda or trigger a crisis. Marcus says an AI-generated intelligence error has already brought the world uncomfortably close to a military confrontation. “We’re rolling the dice here as a species.” And then there is dystopia. Marcus worries AI companies are accumulating enormous quantities of private information while governments and corporations gain increasingly powerful tools for shaping what people see and believe. His argument is almost the reverse of the usual AI apocalypse story. The machines do not need to become superintelligent and exterminate us. AI can remain flawed, unreliable and very human-controlled, and still become extraordinarily dangerous. @GaryMarcus

A dangerous myth has gained traction after the recent hacks perpetrated by the AI agents developed by leading companies: That these incidents are just cyber security problems, that it's only a matter of fixing the sandboxes in which they’re trained. In my latest op-ed for the @FinancialTimes, I share why I believe listening to this narrow perspective would leave us exposed to more similar incidents, while offering solutions for an alternative safer path.
