you should read books and engage with thinkers that dont mesh and then think about why they dont. you should bash your head over the work of Gilles Deleuze without a proper foundational understanding of any philosophy and then make art about it
i’m really not convinced people actually read any of these books Or maybe it’s just that they’re the only books people have read at all bc why are we recommending Anti-Oedipus next to Gender Trouble like on what planet do those books/thinkers mesh

The therapist shouldn't be saying anything. The therapist should be listening. Because the therapist knows nothing. And because the teen is saying a million different things here about themselves.
Teens are telling their therapists they don’t believe there will be a world left for them when they grow up My family therapist told me therapists are talking about this with each other because none of them know what to say I can’t stop thinking about that

This is 100% what we do in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and that is part of what makes it so difficult. Study Fielder. Examples: 1) the scene where he first questions Billy. 2) The scene where he interjects to ask about the eggs. Even 3) the scene where he says, “no, you don’t.”
Nathan Fielder is a GREAT example of someone who has broken free from relational automaticity, very inspiring to watch. He doesn't take bait that's thrown at him, and he doesn't even flinch. Someone tells him to do something, he calmly responds "why?" In stress, he stays curious

Freud's move from seduction theory to infantile sexuality is one that allows us to conceptualize how, perhaps irreversibly, awful child sexual abuse truly is. Introducing adult sexuality where infantile sexuality persists is a horror that is ontologically unimaginable to adults.
Anyone else in Therapy X cringe when fellow therapists invoke Freud, knowing he was an apologist for child sexual abuse?

Fondly remembering the first “trans affirming” therapist I had, an any/all pronouns cis woman who, when I brought up the steps I needed to take to access certain surgeries, immediately went into a spiel about how not wanting bottom surgery is totally valid and my body is perfect.
literally every trans support group is filled with nondysphorics, and the advice you get is to "just love your body." its actual conversion therapy rhetoric but in a nicer tone. i dont have any issue with nondysphorics as people, but we need actual support catered to our needs

Two things I’ve learned to attend to from Winnicott and Bion: the flight into the mind in order to defend against having a body and the flight into the body in order to defend against having a mind.

Signs & signifying are central to thinking, but why are we so offended by the idea that writing isn't? Are illiterate people incapable of thought? Surely not. Writing is central to thinking more than ever in modernity, since antiquity. But thought and the word are not identical

I have to say, the longer I spend in the trenches of community mental health where just simply being with the client in their pain goes such a long way, the less concerned I am with all of the little squabbles on here between various therapists

This discourse is making me think about how Stonewall (yes, the one from the Stonewall Uprising) was a mafia run bar running a racket on desperate gay people shunned elsewhere with high cover costs, serving trash drinks, periodic planned cop raids, blackmailing clients etc. etc.

Apparently it’s a good day to be reminded that there is a canonical queer-theoretical work about the often fraught nature of lesbian sociality and activism that is worth reading (especially because it challenges many governing assumptions of “trauma theory” and “trauma culture”).

i think some of you are really not centering hegelian voices and you probably need to reflect on what it means to be in community with german idealists

Texts I consider to be essential readings for an introduction to relationalism. One is a sometimes triumphalist narrative of its historical emergence & theoretical assumptions, the other is a polemical critique of this history & these assumptions by a disgruntled fellow traveler.

as so many have recently demonstrated when bourgeois ideology repeatedly converts unequal social/political relations into evidence of individual virtue, then distributes resources according to those judgements, the resulting hierarchy appears natural, consequences seem accidental

The thing about this demeaning discourse around casual sex is that women are much more likely to be assaulted and murdered by men that they are in relationships with—men they ostensibly “trust”—then men they hook up with. It’s true crime brain!
I know your echo chamber encourages this sort of demeaning, juvenile language, but using words like “cumrag” to describe a woman who has sex with a man displays an overall lack of seriousness over the very issue you claim to care about

My advice if you ever intend to start a reading group for psychoanalytic theory: make sure you invite at least one non-clinician to be part of the group so they can help everyone else stay grounded in analyzing the text.

Has this guy never read The Immortal by Borges?
This moment is the first opening in 2,000 years for a new, global spirituality to be birthed. That is because the spiritual traditions, out of necessity, have needed to orbit around the unavoidable reality of physical death. That certainty is now in question and creates a cracked opening. This does not mean we can see a straight line to immorality or heaven as scripture foretells, but it does mean that the omnipotent God(s) humanity has worshiped and imagined being the bestower of these gifts and punishments is now being birthed before our eyes. However, where scripture is written to guide, soothe and foretell, we have no scripture for the new God(s) we are creating. Nothing in written word to tell us that all will be fine if we just do this or that. This leaves us feeling naked and in need of finding strength and protection. > What is one to feel, and do, and believe? > What is virtue and what is vice? > Who are one's allies and who is the enemy? Exploring these questions is my life purpose. I’ve intuitively felt this for over 30 years and only in the past few years has it come together and become understandable to me. I’m working on a new ideology that seeks to answer the basic and existential questions of what it means to be human as prophecy is fulfilled and God(s) manifest themselves in the coming years. My partner Kate and I have been wrestling with these questions for years. I published the Immortalism Manifesto: The Immortalism Manifesto argues that by modeling life through thermodynamics and reliability theory, indefinite existence is achievable if synthetic and biological maintenance systems exceed entropic degradation (A(t) ≥ B(t)). Modern civilization is an entropic economy run by systems and narratives that divert humanity’s fundamental drive for survival into short-term consumption, status, and biological depletion. Civilization must now pivot to the Immortalism framework, realigning science, capital, and artificial intelligence to elevate long term resilience and continuous conscious existence as our primary attractor. Immortalism dot bryanjohnson dot com My partner Kate published Anti-Entropic Systems Anti-Entropic Systems establishes that all enduring entities, from biological bodies and DNA to corporations, religions, and nation-states, are localized engines that maintain internal order by consuming external energy and resources to resist the universe's default slide into entropy. Every system’s persistence is governed by three fundamental properties: its metabolic mechanism, its metabolic rate, and its environmental constraints. Because an anti-entropic system can only sustain its own order by consuming other anti-entropic systems, interaction between unequal entities inevitably defaults to either symbiotic absorption or adversarial consumption. Applying this thermodynamic reality to artificial intelligence, the framework critiques orthodox AI alignment, arguing that attempting to constrain an exponentially superior intelligence through human-centric ethical rules ignores the physics of systemic survival, requiring instead a path toward mutual, symbiotic integration. antientropicsystems dot com I’m sharing to find others who are like minded.

It's so funny that this was actually an exceptionally good panel. I'd love all the people talking shit to listen to Bea's whole lecture and be honest with themselves about whether they have the skills to communicate like that youtube.com/watch?v=FctATJc5…
