One fascinating thing about English: native speakers constantly wonder how to pronounce certain words. In many languages spelling rules dictate pronunciation. And I think Old English worked that way too.
What happened? Is there an established reason English lost or removed that?

Most often the AI will write this code for you.
If the second expensive lookup is needed 50% of the time, this code is highly inefficient. On average, it will spend the most time of all three options and have the second highest compute costs.
What it will never do is try to reason out of unique worst-case scenarios.
Unusual code is sometimes needed to address circumstantial requirements that don't necessarily follow the same performance strategies elsewhere in the project.
Your ability to take control of performance tradeoffs in your code when doing agentic development is very limited. And impossible, if you don't look at the code.
But option 1 and 2 could potentially cost your company hundreds of thousands of dollars annually on cloud hosting.
Look at the code. Slow down.
The things agentic AI will not do for you.
Number 1 - Controlling Performance Tradeoffs
If you have an expensive lookup function that is dependant on sentinel values, you will likely run into a performance tradeoff and need to decide what's the best option based on your requirements.
So, without subagents how will the loop thing work? What about stacks? And AI factories? Wasn't the whole vibe code orchestration predicated on subagents?
Who would ever thought that 78 years later, an Israeli government would shame their people history and disgrace their nation, by turning their country into an evil bastion of propaganda, racism, destruction and death.
Imagine the power that people with this type of sociopathic behavior will have if the governments of the world indeed regulate and limit access to this technology.
They will be the only ones with full access to its potential and deciding who has access to what and in which capacity. It's mind boggling that we should consider that future as acceptable.
To all PHP developers,
Today is not a good day. You are learning that people really hate you. They call you ignorant and blame you for being outdated, stubborn, and an overall detriment to the wellbeing of society.
It makes little sense to you. You want to speak out, but they immediately shut you down. You want to say that,
- All you've been doing in the last 15 years is trying your best at maintaining legacy software you don't own, in a programming language that once promised decision-makers the world at their feet. That same world that went on to embrace PHP as the best thing since sliced bread and would swear by it (we both remember, don't we?) Including many of the developers that now shame you.
- You've been trying to push for years your organization to rewrite. But with no success, because meanwhile Agile happened and the NewSpeak is ship often and ship fast.
- You've witnessed the birth of the web SPA and the explosion of Javascript frameworks. And you've seen it tremble to the worst security flaws imaginable. Data stolen, websites down for hours or days, companies being sent to court... things that make your PHP code feel like lighting a match while everyone around you is juggling torches.
- You've seen this and much more. You've seen C code being used to hijack companies and people secrets, hardware security flaws that lock and hold for ransom critical servers, software engineers writing private keys in config files. You've seen all this and still don't understand how PHP fits in all of it.
Don't worry. It will all pass. The world will move on in the next 48 hours, and go back to be really terrible at building software products. And you can go back to be a forgotten piece of legacy furniture. Just know some people are thinking of you today.
There is something profoundly funny about AI slopers laughing at PHP websites, after losing their keys to an agent publishing them, seeing their home folders deleted, or their entire production databases purged.
This is a clown world.
