Identity verification vendors are sell false promises about privacy preserving age checking on my LinkedIn posts so I created a flow chart to answer them with as few words as possible. Australia created the term "robust age checking", which regulators in the US, the UK, and the EU adopted. Because age estimation algorithms can't meet the legal threshold for "robust", regulators avoid explicitly demanding identity verification in public statements. Apple, Google, and Meta have already implemented identity verification under the cover of account recovery and regulatory compliance before this mandate came out. Journalists covering online child safety legislation must replace the phrase "age checking" with "identity verification". Most of them conclude their coverage with statements asserting that critics don't know how these frameworks will operate. Technical experts understand precisely how these systems operate. Media outlets that continue to repeat state claims about unknown technical implementations are moving from distributing misinformation to actively driving disinformation.

Macron’s under-15 social media ban was struck down in France as unconstitutional. His response is to try to get the EU to impose it across the entire bloc instead. But you can’t reliably ban under-15s without checking everyone’s age. So a “kids’ safety” law quickly becomes a digital ID check for every user. reclaimthenet.org/macron-eu-…

🚨 IDSCAN.NET OFFICIALLY CONFIRMS DATA BREACH — GOVERNMENT ID INFORMATION POTENTIALLY EXPOSED IDScan.net has officially confirmed a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to information stored in its cloud environment. The identity verification company says it received information around September 1 indicating that certain data may have been accessed without authorization. IDScan subsequently launched an investigation and engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists. The company has now determined that an unauthorized third party may have accessed and/or COPIED customer information stored within customer accounts on the IDScan.net cloud. Potentially affected information includes: * Full names * Driver's license numbers * Other government-issued identification numbers IDScan says it has taken steps to secure its systems and currently has no evidence of ongoing unauthorized access. Potentially affected records are those that entered its systems BEFORE September 1, 2026. The company is reviewing the affected information to identify impacted individuals and says it will provide notifications and free credit-monitoring services where appropriate. 🚨 WHAT ABOUT THE REPORTED 153 MILLION DRIVER'S LICENSES? This is an important distinction. Earlier reporting linked IDScan.net to a massive dark-web dataset advertised through the Nexus marketplace, reportedly containing approximately 153 million driver's-license records and millions of other identity documents. IDScan's new disclosure confirms unauthorized access to its cloud environment and potential copying of government-ID information. However, IDScan has NOT confirmed that 153 million figure as the number of people or records affected. The full scope of the incident remains under investigation. ⚠️ Analyst Note: This is an unusually sensitive category of breach. Passwords can be changed. Payment cards can be replaced. Government-issued identity information is substantially more difficult to remediate once compromised. And identity-verification providers inherently represent high-value aggregation points because their platforms may process identity documents on behalf of many different organizations. For defenders, this incident raises a broader supply-chain question: How long should identity-verification providers retain the documents and identity attributes they process after verification is complete? Data that no longer needs to exist cannot later become breach inventory. Official source — IDScan.net: idscan.net/press-release/not… #DDW #IDScan #DataBreach #IdentityTheft #CyberSecurity

Yet ANOTHER age verification company identity leak. glimpchain.com/news/revolut-… The government and anti-porn activists want youth submitting identifying documents to these companies, and the companies are *not* deleting verification images.
‼️ BREAKING: Revolut handed over customers’ passport copies, verification selfies and full transaction histories to a malicious actor. The actor sent lawful government information-demand emails using a genuine government domain that passed domain authentication. Revolut later concluded they were not authentic. Affected customers were notified on Friday. What may have been disclosed ranges from name, date of birth and home address to account statements, withdrawal records and complete Bitcoin transaction history. The company says it has alerted the agency to the unauthorised mailbox on its domain, blocked the address and begun notifying regulators. It has not named the agency, explained how someone obtained a mailbox there, or given a number of affected customers. ZachXBT, who circulated the notices, believes the incident was limited in size and aimed at high-net-worth users.

France’s highest court has blocked a proposed law banning children under 15 from social media. The French Constitutional Council said the law could violate freedom of expression and privacy, and that the age-verification system was unclear and lacked sufficient legal protections. Already approved by lawmakers, the law would have required social media companies to verify users’ ages and close under-15s’ accounts. President Emmanuel Macron supports “protecting children online”, and the government plans to rewrite the law to address the court’s concerns.

6️⃣Przyspieszyć budowę polskiej energetyki jądrowej Polska potrzebuje stabilnej, nowoczesnej i możliwie taniej energii. Budowa dużych elektrowni jądrowych oraz rozwój małych reaktorów modułowych muszą stać się prawdziwym priorytetem państwa. 7️⃣Stop polityce klimatycznej Unii Europejskiej ETS, ETS2, zielony ład i inne rozwiązania które uderzają w przemysł, rolnictwo i portfele obywateli muszą zniknąć. Europa musi być konkurencyjna i innowacyjna, a fundamentem jej rozwoju powinna być tania energia. 8️⃣Przywrócić wielkie inwestycje strategiczne Polska musi wrócić do ambitnych projektów, które budują nowoczesną gospodarkę i wzmacniają naszą niezależność. CPK, rozwój polskiej kolei, energetyka, porty, przemysł obronny, Izera i inwestycje w nowe technologie powinny stać się kołem zamachowym rozwoju. 9️⃣Polska w smartfonie Musimy wrócić na pozycję lidera cyfryzacji i nowych technologii w służbie obywatela. Państwo wygodne, dostępne w każdej gminie i w pełni transparentne dla społeczeństwa to nasz cel. 🔟Najpierw zwycięstwo Nie chodzi o moje stanowisko ani o osobiste ambicje. Do dzieła! Razem budujmy przyszłość Polski!🇵🇱

Stop Chat Control!
The legislation has been dubbed "chat control" by its critics, due to its privacy implications, particularly on end-to-end encrypted communications. #EuropeNews ➡️ l.euronews.com/fLki

This censorship law is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The real goal is to enable the UK government to track everyone.
It’s important to know that the social media ban for under 16s is not a ban for under 16s. It is a ban on *selected* social media for EVERYONE. Until you identify yourself.

‼️🇪🇺 The EU's new Age Verification app was hacked with little to no effort. When you set it up, the app asks you to create a PIN. But that PIN isn't actually tied to the identity data it's supposed to protect. An attacker can delete a couple of entries from a file on the phone, restart the app, pick a new PIN, and the app happily hands over the original user's verified identity credentials as if nothing happened. It gets worse. The app's "too many attempts" lockout is just a counter in a text file. Reset it to 0 and keep guessing. The biometric check (face/fingerprint) is a simple on/off switch in the same file. Flip it to off and the app skips it entirely.

Hacking the #EU #AgeVerification app in under 2 minutes. During setup, the app asks you to create a PIN. After entry, the app *encrypts* it and saves it in the shared_prefs directory. 1. It shouldn't be encrypted at all - that's a really poor design. 2. It's not cryptographically tied to the vault which contains the identity data. So, an attacker can simply remove the PinEnc/PinIV values from the shared_prefs file and restart the app. After choosing a different PIN, the app presents credentials created under the old profile and let's the attacker present them as valid. Other issues: 1. Rate limiting is an incrementing number in the same config file. Just reset it to 0 and keep trying. 2. "UseBiometricAuth" is a boolean, also in the same file. Set it to false and it just skips that step. Seriously @vonderleyen - this product will be the catalyst for an enormous breach at some point. It's just a matter of time.
.@vonderleyen "The European #AgeVerification app is technically ready. It respects the highest privacy standards in the world. It's open-source, so anyone can check the code..." I did. It didn't take long to find what looks like a serious #privacy issue. The app goes to great lengths to protect the AV data AFTER collection (is_over_18: true is AES-GCM'd); it does so pretty well. But, the source image used to collect that data is written to disk without encryption and not deleted correctly. For NFC biometric data: It pulls DG2 and writes a lossless PNG to the filesystem. It's only deleted on success. If it fails for any reason (user clicks back, scan fails & retries, app crashes etc), the full biometric image remains on the device in cache. This is protected with CE keys at the Android level, but the app makes no attempt to encrypt/protect them. For selfie pictures: Different scenario. These images are written to external storage in lossless PNG format, but they're never deleted. Not a cache... long-term storage. These are protected with DE keys at the Android level, but again, the app makes no attempt to encrypt/protect them. This is akin to taking a picture of your passport/government ID using the camera app and keeping it just in case. You can encrypt data taken from it until you're blue in the face... leaving the original image on disk is crazy & unnecessary. From a #GDPR standpoint: Biometric data collected is special category data. If there's no lawful basis to retain it after processing, that's potentially a material breach. youtube.com/watch?v=4VRRriyD…
