Guru Tegh Bahadur: The Culminating Voice of Sikh Scriptural Thought An Ang-by-Ang Philosophical Exploration of the Ninth Guru's Bani (This Will hopefully be a very Long Thread ) The Guru and His Place in Sikh Thought Guru Tegh Bahadur (1621–1675), the ninth Sikh Guru, occupies a singular position in the evolution of Sikh philosophy. He was the last Guru whose own Bani became part of Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS), contributing 116 compositions: 59 Shabads across 15 Raags and 57 Saloks. Sri Guru Granth Sahib embodies a profound confluence of spiritual wisdom, bringing together the voices of Sikh Gurus, Bhagats and other contributors across centuries, communities and intellectual traditions. Standing near the culmination of this extraordinary intellectual and spiritual lineage, Guru Tegh Bahadur inherited generations of accumulated wisdom. His Bani provides an authoritative finality of expression to Sikh philosophical thought. His reflections on consciousness, impermanence, Maya, attachment, equanimity and liberation are not merely devotional expressions. They invite a rigorous philosophical examination of existence, human identity and the nature of ultimate reality. The Purpose of This Study To encounter Guru Tegh Bahadur through his own words, before encountering him through the interpretations of others. This project is an intellectual exploration of his Bani, undertaken in the canonical sequence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Each composition will be examined through its original Gurmukhi, faithful English translation, linguistic and philosophical analysis, and carefully referenced comparisons with philosophical traditions. Our inquiry will seek to understand not only what Guru Tegh Bahadur says, but how his thought reflects and develops the philosophical inheritance of the earlier Gurus and other canonical contributors. The Principle of Intellectual Authority Guru Tegh Bahadur speaks with the authority of a Sikh Guru whose Bani forms part of the canonical scripture. Subsequent saints, scholars and commentators may illuminate his thought, but cannot claim equivalent scriptural authority. Where later interpretations contradict the demonstrable meaning of canonical Gurbani, it is the interpretation, not the Gurbani, that must yield. Our ambition is neither to defend a predetermined interpretation nor to impose a later philosophical framework upon the Guru. It is to allow the original Bani to speak with its own intellectual authority, and to examine its philosophical depth with the seriousness, openness and precision it deserves. Where Our Journey Begins In our next post, we will attempt to understand Ang 219 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the first Ang to contain the Bani of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
