Next, you might tackle wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Ideol… — Guilds facilitated self-interested defense of the state, to secure continuity in the state-backed guilds. Once guilds were abolished, a standing army was needed for defense, because young men no longer had a stake in preserving the system.

Keep in mind that one can cause "harassment, alarm, or distress" in England and Wales by uttering a true statement of fact to someone who doesn't want to hear it, or by offering an honestly-held opinion or belief, spoken or written, which also offends.

The observable universe may hold around one septillion stars. Your brain isn’t built for that number.
Write it out and it looks like a typo: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. That’s a one followed by 24 zeros, and every single one of those zeros is pulling its weight.
They aren’t packed into one neat corner of space, either. Those stars are scattered across an estimated two trillion galaxies.
Two trillion galaxies. Each one loaded with its own suns.
And we’re on a single planet, orbiting one of them.
The interesting thing is the political entrepreneurship of Network States ultimately want to be recognised as sovereign states.
That’s cool but history offers a more interesting template in the Hanseatic League, a polity of trading posts defined by the commerce it protected rather than the territory it held.
For economies of humans + agents, that's the more interesting model; extra-territorial, flow-based, bound by charter rather than borders.

elon popping the AI bubble after front running the Anthropic and OpenAI IPO is like watching an episode of billions and succession lol

Pretty much.
As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers.
SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue.
That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.

Magnificent essay by @vgr
“The crucial economic question then becomes not how much intelligence people can produce, but how much intelligence they can find uses for.”
this is the future of universities - to lead discovery of the uses of intelligence

a two-year-old mining company has raised $400M. @a16z, @khoslaventures and the CIA's venture fund are all on the cap table.
@jclozano9897 co-founded @MarianaMinerals with @tbc415 and @baker_tilney, two friends from stanford. it's now worth $1.6B. they buy mines after the market gives up on them, then run them with software and AI.
i asked him how you actually buy a mine, why AI's real bottleneck is metal, and whether he'd hire me for being good at claude code.
