I don't think it's wrong to host a destination event- but in some circles, this has become the default, and almost all weddings/celebrations are a trifecta of childfree + requires airfare + multiple days away, replacing more accessible local events. Link in replies.

The Chinese will drop the most unhinged savagery and insults at Turks 🇹🇷 online, no problem, but the moment a French footballer laughs at a photoshopped meme of himself as Mao and says he's "some guy - I think he's a Chinese dictator” in the most offhand way possible, it’s full Cultural Revolution mode.
Within hours, energy drink Dongpeng announced it was ending its partnership with Kylan Mbappé.
Then Mengniu, China's largest dairy producer, cut every tie with "immediate effect." Mengniu said it has "zero tolerance" for any words or actions that hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.
"Dongpeng Beverage ends cooperation with Mbappé" became the number one trending topic on Weibo.
For laughing at a dumb Mao meme on a French show, and not knowing who he was, Mbappé lost sponsors, and the state is now blacking out La Liga on Chinese TV.
Which is important context seeing that the Chinese keyboard warriors who popped out from behind the Great Firewall to hurl high IQ, historically sophisticated venom at Turks this past week have been advertising “look how free and based we are.”
But you're not really free and based if you can't even be ignorant of or not supply sufficient reverence to your nation's leaders and heroes.
Kylian Mbappé lost major Chinese sponsorship deals after joking about a meme of himself as Mao Zedong.
On the French YouTube show The Bridge (hosted by his France teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni), Mbappé was asked about his favorite meme of himself. He said it was the one where his face is put on the body of a “Chinese dictator” (Mao Zedong). He added that it really makes him laugh and that he uses it a lot with his friends (e.g., while gaming online).
Dongpeng (Eastroc Beverage / Bu Shui La brand), a major Chinese drinks company and one of Mbappé’s key Chinese sponsors, terminated all cooperation immediately. It stated it firmly opposes any conduct that hurts national sentiment and applies zero tolerance.
Mengniu, the large Chinese dairy company, also cut ties and removed Mbappé-related content from its social media (including Weibo).

Macron says social media is super bad and allows bad political actors too many opportunities to get their messaging out.
Let's travel back in time...
Macron’s rise to power wasn’t just a political victory it had been said at the time it was a "masterclass in modern digital strategy". (Read social media platforms)
Before Trump, the Macron machine decided to bypass traditional media filters. In fact, his campaign directly benefited from digital platforms and social media, leveraging them into an essential pillar of his win. 🧵
And while Trump has been criticized for this it was Macron who 1st bypassed journalists –he never relied solely on MSM –pressers, interviews etc., The Macron machine recognized early that today's electorate lived online. He used all the tools to strike at the youth and millennial voters by using platforms like X, Instagram etc to engage directly —the very ones he wants to limit or stop today.
Trump is always criticized for this by the MSM, but it was Macron's strategy that effectively eliminated the journalistic middleman. And this gave him complete control of the narrative, allowed for his team to push out rapid response messaging, and this gave him a "forward-thinking", progressive image.
But his strategy went far beyond standard campaign updates and included key communication strategies conservatives are regularly bashed for –like Pierre Poilievre's campaign was.
• Influencer Collaborations
• Micro Targeting + Data
• Platform Adaptation: Slick leadership addresses on FB to "quick" content on TikTok, Macron's team was known for expertly tailoring their tone to match wherever the audience was.

I just don't see insulting conservatives as a successful long-term strategy for conservatives.
Virtually all of the slopulist right "influencers" in Canada were on Team One BC, which won 1% of the vote.
They set their hair on fire when the BC Conservatives decided to stabilize themselves as a mainstream centre-right party at the beginning of the campaign.
As with the Alberta referendum, this is yet more evidence that these so-called influencers have no influence, and should be broadly ignored by sensible, principled Canadian conservatives.

Remember when Ottawa and Toronto conservatives swooned over this guy?
Some of us have a red line and refuse to ignore it.
Spare us the sermon, @WabKinew . You're an intellectual and political lightweight with a record of misogyny and a seriously questionable, immoral history. Shame on Manitoba for electing you. And as the interloper you are, let me remind you that you have no business posing as anyone's moral compass.
We fired an unethical government whose negligence and nefarious "management" has caused irreparable damage– sold out our rights and freedoms, fuelled division, racism and hate, and devastated British Columbia. Full stop.
Be happy for now that we don't have the legislation to grab your buddy Eby to hold him responsible for what he's done to this province.
The scandal is what the NDP did with power and always has.
