Wow. According to the @Suntimes Chicago Board of Education President Sean Harden has launched investigations into how information on CPS Superintendent finalists got into the hands of reporter @SSKedreporter and how information on a special public meeting to raise property taxes got into my hands.

Canadians fought for walkable streets. Côte-des-Neiges, Montreal, June 22, 1955: After a driver injured a 7-year-old boy, about 40 women blocked the intersection of Clanranald and Van Horne avenues, demanding safer conditions for walking and letting no motorists through. ...

We're a city designed for people. 🫶
A street can be just asphalt for cars… or a place where neighbors meet, kids play, and small businesses & community thrive. Montreal chose community over traffic on 10 streets and the difference speaks for itself. Streets aren’t just for moving through, they’re for living in.

BREAKING: Chicago's school board PASSED the district's $10.2 billion budget on a 12-to-7 vote. That budget does NOT include high-cost borrowing & will only make a controversial pension payment to the city if the district gets unexpected revenue.

Notable: CPS Board members like Michila Blaise and Debby Pope argued that CPS would be "bad partners" if they pushed that pension cost onto the city -- but a majority of council members would actually prefer the city take on that cost.
More than half of Chicago City Council members have signed a letter calling on board members to support the CPS budget, calling the pension payment + borrowing "reckless" and saying it would lead to "pain felt by Chicagos students."

Here's the map of phone policies by state, as the school year starts. Red is best (full day); Orange is class-time only, which is much less effective. Gold is that local schools must develop a policy, any policy. apnews.com/article/schools-c…

.@ChiPubSchools Board Members @MichillaB, @Kjzaccor, @debbypo, @ebony4education, @aaronjitubrown, @EdBannonNWChi cut 1,200 Local 1 custodians to “save $40 million”, yet they're proposing a loan that will cost CPS $90+ million in interest payments to wealthy bond investors.
11 Chicago Board of Education members - aligned with Mayor Johnson and CTU - pen letter to CPS CEO Macquline King to support short term loan and $175 million pension payment, despite CPS’ budget director saying those provisions could lead to a ‘downward spiral’ for CPS finances

Car crashes have killed or seriously injured roughly the same number of people as shootings in Chicago this year, but only one of these things is treated as a public safety crisis.

Not DALLAS passing large-scale parking reforms before Chicago. That’s just embarrassing.
Dallas City Council voted 14-1 to approve major reforms to the City's off-street parking requirements. 🏙️eliminated in Downtown & within 1/2 mile of transit 🛍️eliminated for office & most retail 🏛️eliminated for historic buildings 🚗reduced for other residential uses 📍Dallas

We’ve adopted daylighting - also known as removing illegal parking too close to an intersection - on virtually every Hoboken intersection to create safer streets. It allows for maximum visibility of pedestrians in our roadways, and is a key component of our Vision Zero program. And it works - with Hoboken as proof. This should be adopted in cities across the country, and I strongly support the NYC Councilmembers pushing this bill.
When you walk up to an intersection, can you see if there's a car coming? Or is a parked car blocking your view — and blocking a driver's view of you? We can fix this dangerous problem with @CMJulieWon's universal daylighting bill to make every NYC intersection safer.

Children are the most vulnerable road users, and they're most exposed to traffic violence while walking or biking. I had a hunch that CPS schools with lots of resident students also had lots of nearby crashes involving kids on foot or bike. Unfortunately, the data confirm this.

Between Sept 2017 and Jan 2025, at least 4028 Chicago kids were injured by a car while walking or biking. On average, that's 1.5 injury crashes everyday. 29% of those crashes happened between 7-9 am or 3-5 pm on a school day. Kids should be able to walk to school without fear.
