one of my favorite episodes of Angel is the one where they go to help the possessed child, and these cryptic messages keep showing up saying 'help me' and 'save me.' come to find out, the demon is exorcised and HE was sending the messages. he was trapped in the kid because
Yep, sounds right...

“There was no life saving measures in the EXECUTION ROOM?!”
There was no medical oxygen or mask in the execution chamber where Tennessee tried and failed to kill convicted murderer Christa Pike, which meant staff had to go and get it when things went wrong, according to a source who witnessed what happened. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/-me…

Comments like this go a long way toward understanding a certain soft-on-crime mindset Isolating Christa Pike from other people is torture; subjecting her future cellmates to her opportunistic murder attempts is not

If there’s a world where nobody reads, it’ll be a dystopia. Reading activates your brain in a way watching TV just doesn’t. I can only imagine the situation will get worse if we slide downhill from Netflix to “AI-flix.” As literacy has gone down hill, so has common decency and our cohesion as a people. We should be aiming to make that better, not worse.
OK, I'm convinced: Reading and literacy are not essential for the future (yes, I'm serious). Technology can fill in most gaps. The ability to read long-form will be a rare and elite skill, at least for the next few generations.

if my family made post-death AI videos of me forgiving my killer I would contract demons to haunt them for generations
US road rage killer's sentence quashed because AI video of victim was shown in court bbc.in/4rGHDS4
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The sentence was thrown out because an appeals judge ruled that the video should not have been shown in the original trial. BBC misleadingly implies that the sentence was quashed because of the persuasive impact of the video itself. bbc.com/news/articles/…

my biggest hot take is that we need way less special editions and way more mass market paperbacks
I miss when you maybe only got a special edition of a book if it was out for 10+ years. Now it’s sprayed edges straight off the bat or bonus content and covers that are different depending on where you bought the book. The consumerism with publishing these days is tiring

I don’t know how Crusades work, precisely, but if the Pope called for the sacking of Silicon Valley solely for its hubris … we’d have to at least hear him out, right?
Even as a non-religious person, I personally cringe at the hubris required to personally tell the Pope that you think your company has created an ensouled being, thus rendering Anthropic equivalent to God the creator. Further, that you did it for profit and it is now enslaved.

"I understand she has been through a lot" She literally couldn't bury her daughter for over two decades because of this women (who also brutally tortured and murdered her) Her anger at the state failing her daughter again is actually justified and she shouldn't be shamed
I'm sorry but no. I understand that she has been through a lot but "I am owed an apology because the state failed to end a human life to my satisfaction" is a ghoulsih thing to say in pretty much any circumstance.

There are certain tropes that I love but I think, overall, the tropification of romance novels is ruining romance novels. It feels like writers are focused less on character development and more on stuffing as many popular tropes into their books as possible. Every line of dialogue is competing with the next to be a viral booktok quote so much so that every conversation between the characters feels unnatural and forced.

How much pain did her victim feel when she beat her over the head with chunks of asphalt and butchered her with a meat cleaver? For that matter, how much pain did her second victim feel when Pike tried to strangle her to death in prison?
