Scott Baker, @PhdDfs, @m36johnson, @KPisciotta11, and I have a new paper that examines the consequences of gambling. We find that online sports betting leads households to reduce investment and increase debt, particularly for financially constrained households.
Seems like everywhere I turn there is an ad to induce people to gamble. TV, billboards, online, radio. What do we know about the causes and consequences? For example, how much does it affect inequality today? Could gambling be the next big inequality catalyst? Is it already in some countries?

Despite historic recession, in 2020 firm bankruptcies in advanced economies declined over 25% relative to pre-Covid normal due to exceptional policy measures, in contrast to previous recessions. Policy makers should prepare for possible "pent-up bankruptcies."
