Since its première, in 2022, “Slow Horses”—Apple TV’s fast-paced espionage drama about a division of MI5 where the screwups and sluggards end up—has become “a treasure to those in the know, and a nonentity to outsiders,” Inkoo Kang writes. The show, starring Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden, boasts nearly two dozen Emmy nominations, and a few wins, but has never reached the breakout status of “Ted Lasso” or “Severance.” Read why Kang thinks the underrated program is the best on Apple TV:newyorkermag.visitlink.me/Eo…

Dolly was next to me at the microphone, and we were reminiscing about when we made Islands in the Stream, among other memories. She suddenly turned to me and said, “Where we are standing right now is where I wrote Jolene, and I Will Always Love You.”

Dolly was pure light sent from heaven. My mentor is gone. My songwriting teacher and hero of grace and humility. There is a hole in my heart but the joy of just the thought of her smile will continue to fill me with inspiration for as long as I live. I will cherish this moment performing Coat Of Many Colors with Dolly forever. Goodbye Dolly. Rest in peace, beautiful angel.

Time when editors were resilient to power and true to their craft.
Today's lot, as Yeats observed..
"They have all made what Dante calls the Great Refusal. The shallowest people on the ridge of the earth."

Said was beautifully dressed, although I think there's only a tenuous connection between intellectualism and an interest in aesthetics. Nonetheless, an interesting thing about Said is that he used tailors — real tailors — who are among the last to treat customers as real individuals in an age of mass production. My friend Eugene Rabkin, who's coming out with a book this fall titled Torn: Fashion and Post-Modernism, recently sent me this quote by Walter Benjamin:
“On the theory of dandyism. The tailor’s the last line of business in which the customer is still catered to on an individual basis. More and more, the person commissioning work plays a heroic role.”
If we're to take Marx's theory of alienation seriously, then having a relationship with a tailor — depending on how the shop is set up — can be a way to mitigate some of the alienation inherent in capitalist production.
