There is nothing worse than an insecure person with money. Everything they do is to feign status. They're inconceivably shallow and unimpressive. For making money their prerogative they're offensively stingy.
No hobbies, no depth, no unique interests. Their life is merely a vessel for flexing on the internet.
Don't fall for the facade

Society is full of little, insidious mechanisms trying to capture and divide your energy and focus
This is completely against your own self-interest, but from this discourse this weekend on unhappiness in the face of abundance it should be fully evident that people are almost powerless to resist these forces
This is because the smartest people in the world are hard at work creating novel approaches to highjack your attention, degrade your willpower and convince you to trade your money and your time for the next _____ which will surely, finally, bring your happiness
But success, and contentedness, come from investing in *fewer* pursuits with *more* depth and intensity
You only need a few great friends who you can count on and who can count on you. A couple of hobbies you are willing to be bad at for years until you slowly live your way into well-crafted mastery. Your career will flourish if you embrace the dogged pursuit of a single outcome over a long period of time
This is the tension of modern existence, and the true meta-skill to hone and refine over decades. How do you live a deliberate life in a world that actively wants you to exist in a state of reactive desire?
I don’t claim to have the answer, and would simply posit this:
Become aware of all the ways society, and people, try to hijack your one precious life to divert attention toward things that really and truly do not matter, and even actively harm you
And every day seek to build mental and emotional resilience against those forces and cultivate persistence in your pursuit of the few things that really and truly matter
It is hard. Many days you will fail. But you cannot let the world knock you off balance and live a life defined by someone else’s terms
It is perhaps the only thing that matters

one thing about long term traveling (3-4 months) is that every new place feels like an entirely different lifetime.
in these past 4 months, i’ve -
- fallen in love
- been to Patagonia
- been roomies w @themattmic
- lived in 3 different airbnbs
- visted to chile
- lived in Brazil
- went through a heartbreak
- wrote a poetry book
- ran over 300 miles
i always hear people say when they’re traveling they don’t like to get too attached to people because they’re going to have to leave…
i say fuck it all.
experience everything you can to the max capacity.
love deeply. feel it all. let it go.
the depths of the emotions you experience are what gives your life meaning.
i’d rather look back and think holy fuck.
…i did that shit.
than stay on the sidelines wondering what if I had just went for it.
very very few.

I acquired a newsletter!
What this really means:
I did a hostile takeover of a newsletter.
Here's how it all went down:
My friend @themattmic grew a newsletter to 7k+ readers writing about building social media businesses.
Then he stopped writing it.
Because I'm a good friend, I bugged him for like 2 months to start writing the newsletter again and stay consistent with it.
But then 6 months had passed since he pressed publish.
Then the opportunistic side in me came out 😈
We were writing about similar topics... There's 7,000 people sitting there who want to read about those topics...If he's not writing to them, I should!
So I randomly called him up one night and made a ballpark offer.
For the next few weeks, we went back and forth texting, arguing, and laughing on the phone as I told him this is a hostile takeover.
We settled on a fair price.
This morning, I'm proud to announce I officially integrated Matt's reading list into my newsletterCyber Patterns
Special thanks to:
- @beehiiv for being the newsletter host with the most
- @MarketingMax for buying me tacos and forcing me to calculate my LTV and realize I had a way more valuable business than I realized
- @JMatthewMcGarry for your newsletter acquisition guide: newsletteroperator.com/p/i-b…
In 72 hours, I'll send out my first post to all combined readers.
The post is titled Long Term Games With Long Term Friends. In it, I'll explain my mindset for how I'm slowly building a content empire.

I’ve been thinking a lot about asymmetric bets recently.
Things like:
• Writing online
• Starting a service-based business
• Dropping out/quitting your job to bet on yourself
• Traveling the world
• Cold DMing people you look up to
• Talking to strangers irl
• Crypto shitcoins
All of these require just a small upfront investment.
The potential upside?
Nearly limitless—most will change your life.
The downside?
You’re back where you already were.
Nothing (or very little) lost, valuable lessons gained.
They’re absolute no-brainers if you have the courage to bet.
What are some other asymmetries I haven’t listed?

On the 3 eternal markets (health, wealth, relationships):
If you had to imagine a life where you only succeeded in 1 area, while you failed at the other 2 areas…
Which life would you choose?
1. Lonely and broke, but you’re in great shape.
2. Lonely and unhealthy, but you have incredible wealth.
3. Unhealthy and broke, but you have a priceless friend group and a ride-or-die spouse you love.
#3 wins, by far.
Relationships matter most.

Online echo chambers are a helluva drug.
It’s fascinating to watch people drift to extreme viewpoints of delusion…
Following those who confirm their beliefs.
Muting those who threaten them.
Don’t forget to be spend time with people outside your niche corner of the internet.
In real life.
A good measuring stick:
If you can’t find ways to connect with the common man, you’ve drifted too far.
Doses of normalcy are healthy.

I can’t believe Hannibal literally led an army of war elephants through the Alps from North Africa to fight against Rome and no movie has been made of it.
Meanwhile, Hollywood’s too busy making Fast & Furious ELEVEN.
Disgraceful.

The ideal outcome of entering the creator economy?
You’re able to translate writing on the internet into:
• Real-life, in-person community
• Consistent cashflow
Less ideal outcome:
• Internet pfp friends only
• Likes, not much cash
Don’t settle for the latter.

Pain tolerance is key to success.
If you can weather an onslaught of “it’s so over’s,” you’ll live to see higher-level “we’re so back’s.”
Reality is, most people will run back to security/stability the second they step off the default path & experience the heat of risk-taking.

foggy weekend in lisbon 🇵🇹
feels like the SF of europe (in the mostly positive ways)
similarities off the top of my head:
• red bridge
• mediterranean climate
• west coast
• cold water surfing
• cable cars
• steep hills
• fog
• great nature nearby
• similar population size
• walkable
• world-class wine
thoroughly enjoyed, although I still prefer porto.
