I smoked for 24 years. I have now been smoke-free for 14 years.
I still use nicotine.
Those three sentences should be straightforward. Yet put them together in a conversation about public health and someone will inevitably suggest that I have merely exchanged one problem for another, as though removing burning tobacco from the equation were a minor administrative adjustment.
I have continued a dependence. I have stopped inhaling cigarette smoke. Both statements can be true, and the distinction between them is the point.
The nicotine confusion machine works by making that distinction disappear.

The purpose of tobacco harm reduction should be to give people more control over their lives, including the freedom to stop thinking about our arguments. We should welcome the day someone no longer needs our help. Their independence is worth more than our continued relevance.

RJR helped push South Carolina’s vape registry. Now they’re mailing out ads for flavored Vuse pods with little lift-and-sniff cards.
So when independent vape shops sell flavors, it’s a crisis. When Big Tobacco does it, we’re supposed to scratch and sniff?

A policy cannot be judged solely by the purity of its intentions. It must be judged by the decisions it produces in the real world. If the goal is to stop people smoking, the exit must be easier to find than the cigarettes.
