Why did American voters turn against Donald Trump so decisively? And will his midterm setback change anything for India?
In this exclusive conversation, Dr Prannoy Roy(@PrannoyRoy7749) speaks with Prof Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, 2019 Nobel Laureate in Economics, about the forces behind the US midterm results and the deeper economic and social tensions shaping American politics.
Banerjee examines how the Iran war, rising fuel prices and the affordability crisis contributed to voter dissatisfaction. He also explores the changing political preferences of young men, Hispanic and Black voters, and college-educated Americans, and questions whether Trump's influence over Republican candidate selection contributed to the party's losses.
Turning to India, Banerjee discusses the outlook for H-1B visas, tariffs, the Iran war and oil prices. The conversation also examines America's long-term wage stagnation, economic resentment, the impact of AI on jobs and whether the election signals any lasting change in the country's political direction.

AI and why this time it IS different... And not in a good way!
The Quantum of investment going into AI are not just high in absolute terms
It is the highest investment EVER in history as a percentage of GDP - this year over 2% of US GDP going up to 3.6% over the next 5 years
There is no other boom which accounted for even half as much in the past century and more.
To get anywhere close we have to go back to the laying of train tracks or rail roads in the 19th century and even that was 'only' 2.2% of the GDP... Eventually led to the to one of the biggest busts in history, even though rail roads brought down the cost of transportation substantially for the entire economy.
Telecom, fibre, internet all put together not even one third of the current boom!
Remember what I have been saying for many months now that you lose more money in successful technologies than you do in unsuccessful ones.
So calling AI a bubble is not making a bet that it would not be a successful technology.
One additional point about technology busts. In the case of rail roads a company could go bankrupt but someone else could acquire the assets at 50% of 30% of the cost and make a viable return.
Even the cables on which the internet is carried under the sea and that we still use were mostly laid by a company called Global Crossing that went belly up over 20 years ago.
It will not work in the current boom as most investments very fast depreciating assets AND these are being bought at inflated prices (this is the other side of the fabulous margins of the likes of Micron and Nvidia)
I repeat something I have said multiple Times already: I have no doubt that the next book on financial bubbles will have a chapter on AI.

India’s next global convening platform doesn't need to be built only in a capital city. Sonipat has the university ecosystem, proximity to Delhi, and scale to become a serious centre for ideas, research and international dialogue. @JindalGlobalUNI Vice Chancellor Dr. C. Raj Kumar. C Raj Kumar makes a compelling case in @htTweets for building this into a durable institution that outlasts once-a-year events.
As Haryana celebrates 60 years of statehood, #JGU envisions a bold new future, transforming Sonipat into the Davos of India!
With the launch of the World Ideas Forum (23–25 January 2027), we take the first step towards making #Sonipat a global hub for ideas, dialogue and innovation.
In @htTweets, JGU Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar shares this ambitious vision.

Nripendra Misra, principal secretary to the Prime Minister, called to ask me to craft a transaction to 'privatise' IDBI Bank by selling it to LIC. Our informal group—along with the secretary of the Department of Financial Services and the LIC chairman—designed the deal in tandem with the regulators, particularly the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, and worked it out.
IDBI Bank must be put back for sale again, writes @Subhashgarg1960.

Prannoy Roy offers a basic lesson in election analysis to the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer and others who questioned DeKoder’s SIR analysis. Don’t miss this:
After the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer and a BJP spokesperson questioned DeKoder's earlier SIR analysis, Prannoy Roy (@PrannoyRoy7749) responds with a closer look at the data.
Is counting seats won enough to understand SIR's electoral impact? What does the vote swing reveal that the seat tally doesn't?
Watch till the end and follow DeKoder for more.

We argued in our piece that headline GST growth numbers must be adjusted—for refunds & re-labelling—to get actual revenue performance
Doing so for latest data yields:
First half, FY27: ACTUAL nominal growth is 5.4% vs. HEADLINE of 12.7%
Q2 FY27: ACTUAL = 8.2%; HEADLINE=15%
Changes to GST since Sep. 2025 have commendably simplified & reduced rates
Rate “re-labelling” has also occurred which has obscured decline in overall revenue & in states’ share of that revenue
