YOU CAN'T EVEN PM IN AO3
I hate to be that person, but seriously, think of how many kids right now are being saved. Have we forgotten that ACTUALLY predators use ao3 to communicate??? The same way they use telegram??? The website being down is a good thing.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
AO3 is a fanfiction repository without private messaging or chat features, unlike Telegram. The downtime is due to a security incident. techcrunch.com/2026/10/29/fan… 404media.co/archive-of-our…

we are MAYBE one (01) round of fandom discourse away from people claiming it's fundamentally unethical to read fanfiction without tipping the authors on cashapp. maybe

I've gotten responses that make me want to make one thing perfectly clear: I am a writer. I've been writing fanfiction since 2008, I have over a 1mil words posted on AO3, and I've seen websites I wrote on in the past (Quizilla) vanish in an instant and take *my work* with them.
im seeing a bunch of tweets like "it's weird that people have such huge archives of fics that arent theirs downloaded to share..." or "i hate that i'm seeing a copy of my fic being passed around outside of my control" and i think y'all need to touch some grass

i find arguments like this completely disingenuous bc if this genuinely happens either you're posting to an incredible niche fandom/ship and atp you KNOW you're writing for yourself and maybe a handful of other ppl at most or-
oh yeah sure and what happens when author sees that 0 kudos and 0 comments and loses motivation to update what are u gonna read then friend

Coming out with the unpopular opinion: I will live without your comments/kudos when ao3 is down. If you have my stuff downloaded, you can share it. If you tell me you liked it, that’s nice, if not have fun!!

Do the people throwing tantrums about fics being downloaded and shared realize that there not being 'reuploaded' anywhere, they remain on drives and in order for that user to have your fic downloaded theyd need to have visited it? And likely left kudos which is all they can do?

I think ppl need to start seeing the big picture for like, 2 seconds. Then they'll understand why AO3 is the way that it is.

AO3 was born out of a fandom space where the hard work done by writers was at a moments notice of being lost forever. That's why it offers the download option, bc in the event AO3 itself is taken down forever, that piece of fandom history, won't be completely lost

As an author: if you don't want your work to be downloaded, don't put it on the site with download option. To the readers: when all is back make sure to drop a kudos or a comment to the things you read and enjoyed. You don't owe it by law but you do owe it by common courtesy

This whole thing just shows how a lot of people in fandom are ONLY active in these circles because of the attention they can extract for themselves. They don’t actually make fanworks as passion projects, but as a way to accrue clout and an “audience”.

For anyone asking how to report a Google Drive link containing fanworks shared without the authors' consent: open the file, click the three dots, select **Report abuse**, and follow the instructions. Authors have the right to protect their work. Don't just complain, report it.

besides the miserable take, like in spirit, because sharing fan works is the biggest part of fandom culture, your genius idea is only gonna fuck authors over

hey so holy shit please don’t do this. if anything you are going to get the authors in question in trouble, because they are the ones who are in a copyright grey area and the last thing any fic author wants is for fucking GOOGLE to be scrutinising their work for “abusive content”

and before i get misunderstood, i'm not piting queer stories/adaptations against each other, i'm just pointing out a pattern that i've noticed with non-white characters.

in shane's case, it's very funny how he got so loved later despite being underdeveloped. the magic of CINEMA. meanwhile alex lost screen time and most of his backstory in his own movie adaptation. book! alex deserved better.
