We warned that Gaza’s makeshift shelters wouldn’t survive the first heavy rain. We never imagined that one night could destroy tens of thousands of tents and wash away entire displacement camps. Help please: chuffed.org/project/113222-t… Roads are under water. In some areas, the flooding is so deep that families can barely get out and our teams can barely get in. People who have already been displaced over and over are soaked, cold, and trying to figure out where their children can sleep tonight. And it’s still raining. We need to act now. Families need replacement tents, dry bedding, and solid ground to pitch those tents on before the next downpour. Please donate to The Sameer Project’s emergency winter response and help us reach families who have lost their shelter again. Give to our General Fund: chuffed.org/project/113222-t…

I admit that I completely broke down today. I cried uncontrollably. I couldn’t hold myself together after witnessing what I saw with my own eyes. Today, we went to film a journalistic report inside the displacement tents along the seashore. I swear, what we witnessed was beyond what any human being should have to endure. I saw men crying bitterly. Men I had never seen cry when they lost their children or when their homes were destroyed. Today, I saw them crying because they were powerless to do the simplest thing: protect their children from the water and the cold. We spoke to families who told us they had spent the entire night carrying their children in their arms after floodwater covered the floors of their tents and soaked their mattresses. They couldn’t find a single dry place to put their children. They couldn’t even give them a few hours of sleep. I saw children no older than five, without proper clothes to protect them from the cold, without heating, and without a dry place to sleep. Children shivering inside tents that cannot keep out the rain, protect them from the wind, or provide even the most basic sense of safety. What more must happen for this world to act? How much more suffering must people endure before someone remembers that they are human beings? I am sick of this world. I am sick of its hypocrisy and empty slogans. To hell with a world that talks endlessly about human rights while leaving children to drown inside their tents. To hell with everyone who has witnessed this suffering and chosen silence, and to hell with the governments and institutions that have the power to act but continue to turn their backs on us.

Scores of trucks carrying new tents and caravans (mobile homes) have been waiting at Gaza's border for more than a year, but Israel has blocked them from entering despite a US-brokered and monitored ceasefire. Israel’s deliberate and systematic cruelty to deprive displaced Palestinians of shelter and compound their suffering is part of an effort to drive Palestinians out of Gaza, and is continuing with full U.S. support.
🚨 HORRIFIC SCENES IN GAZA: Displaced families’ tents are completely submerged in floodwater. After Israel destroyed their homes, families are now left with nothing but flooded tents, with nowhere else to go.

The first genocide in history where nominal allies calling it a genocide also think the genocidal party ought to have “defensive” weapons lest they suffer any consequence or pushback from said genocide. Completely nonsensical and chickenshit

Why should Congressional Democrats investigate corporate America if their mandate is to deliver real economic change? Because investigations are a key catalyst for securing reform and legislation. For much of the last century, Congress used to be the main institutional player working to secure an economy that serves working people. A key tool was oversight. Lawmakers routinely investigated complex markets and major corporations, identifying problems and exposing wrongdoing. A major goal of these investigations was to learn what was driving certain problems and figure out how to fix them. After Democrats took back the House during the first Trump administration in 2019, I joined the House Judiciary Committee as a staffer on the Antitrust Subcommittee. Under the terrific leadership of @RepJerryNadler and then-Rep @davidcicilline, we pursued an 18-month investigation into Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google, securing key evidence of how their business practices were undermining competition and harming people, setting the basis for both lawsuits and proposed legislation. A few lessons from that experience: 1. The quality of legislative oversight depends on the staff and the support of top members to confront power. Committee and Subcommittee Chairs that are focused on getting answers and unafraid to take on powerful corporate interests will make the difference between oversight that doesn’t surrender to their evasion tactics and oversight that aims low or flames out. Even a relatively small number of dogged, talented lawyers ready to dive in can make a big impact. In the 1930s a single congressional lawyer, Ferdinand Pecora, helped reshape our entire banking system by subpoenaing records and interrogating top financiers, including J.P Morgan. The investigation exposed self-dealing, market manipulation, and tax avoidance, and laid the groundwork for foundational New Deal legislation, including the Glass-Steagall Act and the Securities Exchange Act. 2. Eliminating bottlenecks to moving investigations forward is key. For example, the House should make sure that Subcommittee Chairs can issue subpoenas rather than needing the sign-off of the full Committee or its Chair. A credible threat of sending subpoenas is critical for credible oversight. 3. Ensuring that members can develop the muscle to effectively interrogate CEOs requires investing in real preparation. In the lead up to the hearing with Bezos, Pichai, Cook, and Zuckerberg, the Antitrust Subcommittee spent months reviewing millions of documents collected from the firms, interviewing affected parties, briefing members on key evidence, and conducting practice hearings. Members came into the hearing deeply informed and able to rebut and call out CEO dissembling. The result was some of the most effective member questioning of executives we’ve seen in decades. @TheProspect wrote up a great overview: prospect.org/2020/07/30/triu… 4. For decades, institutional capacity in Congress has been extremely weak. Much of this traces back to the Gingrich Revolution, which was effectively the 1995 DOGE-ing of Congress. Republican leadership fired over 600 professional staffers, eliminated the Office of Technology Assessment, and gutted research capacity. None of that capacity was ever meaningfully restored. As a result, members have way fewer resources to develop serious expertise or go deep on a new topic. Members should start rebuilding that capacity so the institution can fully play its Article I role, where Congress can again do serious policy development and legislating and serve as a real check on the executive and judicial branches. 5. AI markets should be high on the list of investigations. The business decisions of the major AI firms have huge public ramifications, yet the public is at a severe informational disadvantage when it comes to how these markets work and the choices these firms are making. A congressional investigation will help ensure future legislative action is based on a more complete view of what is going on rather than selective and partial corporate disclosures.

Romney is one to talk about an “impulsive Iran war.” During his 2012 campaign he flew to Israel to give a speech about how “we must not delude ourselves into thinking that containment [of Iran] is an option.”
Bad policy, bad character make bad politics: erratic tariffs, impulsive Iran war, blanket pardons, apparent corruption, weaponized justice, ICE brutality, mountainous deficits, hiding Epstein, abandoning allies and coddling enemies. Hoping for a course correction, for the country and for my party.

"Several Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee aren’t ruling out supporting more Pentagon funding [for the Iran War]. That includes...Elissa Slotkin of Michigan." Trump's military budget is already $1.1 trillion.
I know a lot of folks are talking about the election results, but this tweet, from a sitting @VP, is stunning. The decision to go to war is the most solemn responsibility that a President and Vice President have as leaders. So for you to reduce it to a simple political calculation while we still have 50,000 troops in the Middle East, is one of the most crass, cynical things I've seen. You and President Trump got us into this war, without a clear objective and without regard for the will of the American people. It's cost us American lives and billions of dollars of American treasure, with no end in sight. Last night, the American people delivered a crystal-clear message about the mismanagement of this war, and what it has done to our pocketbooks. Whether you supported the war or simply failed to stop it, your job is not to try and cover yourself, but to get us out of it.

Kiriakou is exactly right. The idea that Iran would surrender if Trump nuked their Pickaxe Mountain nuclear complex (which is not even operational yet) is a delusion. The US would have to invade and occupy Iran to defeat it or else nuke its largest cities to do so. Just imagine how humiliating it would be Trump if he nuked a few of Iran's nuclear sites and the next day Iranian leaders pledged to keep fighting the US until Trump re-accepted his surrender terms to Iran that he signed up to on June 17th because that is exactly how they would likely react. Worse, they could react by sinking a number of US warships, striking one or both US aircraft carriers with hypersonic anti-ship missiles and staging a devastating cyberattack that could turn out the lights across the US before we have a chance to harden our military bases. According to US intelligence, Iran had no plans to ever attack the US before the war but every day the war continues increases the chances they will end up using their unconventional weapons to kill tens of millions of Americans and Trump will be solely to blame.
Former CIA officer John Kiriakou: Even a nuclear bomb won’t win this Iran war unless we’re ready to send a million ground troops. Trump doesn’t seem to grasp that we’ve already lost. Netanyahu sold him the fantasy that the Iranian government was a house of cards that would collapse the moment leadership was hit. That was never true—and it’s even less true now.

I worked for the CIA. And Haley Stevens’ crashout might be the most brazen attempt by a failed politician to throw an election in favor of a foreign government that I’ve ever seen. Full disclosure, I donated $100 to the Abdul El-Sayed campaign. But I look forward to watching the crashout continue; it will just keep showing Abdul as level-headed, focused on improving the lives of Michiganders.
