Free idea: Someone should write about science news the way @matt_levine writes about finance news. Namely, in a style where the background/explainer is at least as important as the news itself. To elaborate:

What was the technological opportunity cost of the computer revolution? (All those programmers would have been doing something, right?)

Will self-driving cars normalize taking the speed limit literally? (Or will people be allowed to set the cars to drive 5-10 above as usual?)

If you tend to somewhat adapt your personality to others you are with, and if you then assume probable everybody does this, does this imply everybody is actually somewhat more different from you than you think?
The median voter gets what they want on things they care about. Elites get what they want on everything else (assuming they are unified). So you can get something by: - convincing a huge swath of society, changing the views and priorities of the median voter (basically changing the culture) - keeping it off the median voter’s radar and establishing an elite consensus - winning an intra-elite policy fight when there is no elite consensus and the median voter doesn’t care

We build workflows around our tools. Agile development, sales & marketing pipelines, and even organizational form👇 are enabled by & work along with our technology I see folks adding GPT to existing workflows. That is temporary. Ultimately, work is going to be reorganized for AI
The first org chart was made for the New York & Erie Railroad in 1854, solving issues of control & coordination in ways we still use. Not only is it full of plant-inspired beauty, it also combines a map of the physical railroad & one of company structure. mckinsey.com/business-functi…

While underachievers are discussing their plans to read one book per week, I’m reading 10-12 books per day. Here’s the secret to reading hundreds of books in 2023: 🧵 🧵👇👇 1. Have kids 2. Read books with 8 pages 🚀 🚀 🔥 🔥

This is a good idea. I hope partisanship doesn't prevent blue-state governors (and DC's mayor) from following suit.
I've banned TikTok on state issued devices. I'm also calling for legislation to make the ban permanent and to broaden the ban. As I detail in my letter and press release, the threat posed by the CCP through TikTok is serious and must be stopped. gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/…

People who transgress Kelly get worse geometric-mean expected returns (by definition of Kelly), but not worse arithmetic-mean returns. It’s fundamentally a philosophical question which one you care about. And I think SBF makes his position quite clear.

If there were ends-justify-the-means arguments deployed against eg. a notion that it is inherently wrong to misuse customer funds even if you could make more money in expectation that could be used for good purposes, then that could be very much a consequence of utilitarianism

A very nice thread, with three different ways to re-imagine what the FDA does.
Having a force that resists the advance of quack medicine and contaminated food is good. The FDA as it currently exists is bad. There are lots of ways to get the benefits of the former without the enormous drawbacks of the latter.
