Stan Druckenmiller on invest, then investigate. Do you have to be an expert to catch big moves?
"Thank God the answer is an emphatic no. But I've got to have an expert at Duquesne who is, and trust his judgment. And then I've got to have a feel for how the market will embrace the change he's describing.
But we did make a big move into biotech. I could sense that there was a potential leadership change just because of the phobia around AI. And I knew, because I've been on the board of Memorial Sloan Kettering for 30 years, that probably the best use case out there of AI is biotech, through drug discovery, diagnostics, monitoring, everything. So biotech had been on its butt for like four years. I also grew up with technical analysis, and you could see the momentum changing. So that was the theory behind biotech.
But honestly, when the analysts start talking about genetic sequencing and gene editing and proteins, it's going right over Stan's head. But I get the other level of enthusiasm. We have a very good biotech team. That's really important because I trust them. And when they're really enthusiastic, that's as important to me as the actual facts, because I'm not smart enough to understand a lot of the actual facts.
So you filter not just the data, but the people that work for you. My advantage is not IQ, it's trigger pulling."

All very true. Capex in any given quarter can move around for a whole bunch of reasons. Listen to the guide for real signal. 👏🏻
Analysts capex estimates are meaningless to me. Just listen to what the management says regarding the trajectory. There's a lot of timing and constraint reasons in the way that can make capex growth QoQ lumpy and not as smooth as you expect. The aggregate spend from Microsoft and Google is only going up.
I think 2027 is secure in capex spend, but 2028 could see some weakness with law of large numbers playing a bigger role in growth rate decel.

One of the largest cloud service providers in the world is telling you that they don’t have enough compute to meet the demand and must now purchase compute from a third party
The compute shortage is not going away anytime soon. How can you not be long compute over the long run?
$GOOGL on call: "Given the supply constraint environment, we started utilizing third party compute capacity at the end of Q3 and will ramp usage in Q4. We expect margin headwinds in the near term as we utilize this capacity. Moving to investments, our full year 2026 CapEx guidance range of 195 to $205 billion remain unchanged. We continue to expect our CapEx to increase significantly in 2027, and will provide further details on our Q4 call."

How about the robot is looking down while assembling a Swiss watch with one hand and then, without looking up, catches an oblique 100mph baseball with the other hand?
I also like the idea of juggling chainsaws on fire while riding a unicycle.

Writing is the superpower of humankind. It is our truest form of magic.
Writing allows you to conjure up something of value where nothing previously existed. It costs little for you to write down the lessons of your life and yet those few minutes spent writing can be life-altering for the right reader. As I once saw it put: "there is someone out there with a wound in the exact shape of your words."
Furthermore, writing is the foundation of nearly every technology and innovation because we have to record what we know before we can build upon it. And these innovations are passed down from generation to generation, allowing our children to inherit a richer intellectual fortune than what we were born into. The world is richer because we write and nobody is made poorer in the process.

I started companies because a problem wouldn't leave me alone. The money-only motivation hasn't been enough for me when the work gets hard.
Before starting a company, ask yourself whether you actually want to spend the next decade thinking about its problems.

Over the past few months, Anthropic scientists have engaged in deep research partnerships with six organizations developing new medicines. We've also begun drug discovery efforts of our own.
In doing so, we’ve learned much more about how Claude can support the many stages of drug development.
In this blog post, we share some early results from these efforts, and describe how this work fits in with our wider ambitions in the life sciences.
