There persists a very strong belief in HMG that speaking to the nation about threats and risks will create fear and panic in a way that is somehow 'bad politics'. It's born of the same culture that underpins the continued belief in a just-in-time economy, our lack of stockpiles.
The national resilience moment that very nearly barely happened: A huge amount of work has gone on behind the scenes to plan for the "Be Ready" rollout, which was first trailed during the dying days of Sir Keir Starmer's government. Andy Burnham inherited the project as well as leadership of the much-promised but minimally-delivered national conversation on defence. Yet he appears to have chosen not to speak out on the launch of the new readiness campaign despite its national significance. Even Dan Jarvis, the security minister, who is leading on resilience, stayed away from journalists on Thursday, instead just publishing his ministerial statement and sending out a written post on social media. This lacklustre approach was met privately with disappointment among members of the resilience community. The concern - rightly or wrongly - is that it creates the impression that preparing the country (every post code!) for the possibility of any crisis, up to and including war, is not a top priority for the government. news.sky.com/story/be-ready-…

True food security starts with supporting British farmers, not engineering our food. To build a healthy, sustainable food system we must back our growers and embrace a truly agroecological approach. #BackBritishFarmers #UKPolitics

Oh NOES!! The media, which has spent the last 3-4 weeks completely massacring @TheGreenParty and @ZackPolanski is now telling us we should all give up and go home because there has been a fall in public confidence (according to the polls following the media massacre). Yeah. We might be Green, but we are not as green as we are cabbage-looking when it comes to your shenanigans, lady* I'm not giving up and going home. None of us are. Because there is far too much at stake to throw in the towel just because you have decided to, once again, vilify the only political movement that is seriously challenging the status quo. People deserve a future that focuses on their needs instead of the whims of oligarchs, on a habitable, peaceful planet. *Oh, and remember this? I do. youtube.com/watch?v=BzuKaTuk… #GreensOrganise
🟢 I've written this week's @NewStatesman Politics Column on the Greens' pledge to 'replace Labour' which, though fitting for the moment, was clearly unsustainable. The problem with this promise might not have been its ambition, but the assumption that the Greens were ready to fulfil it. Events over the past three weeks - the fall out from the Zionism is Racism motion and the Holborn and St Pancras by-election - could all be seen as evidence of that. And now, exclusive polling by @Moreincommon_ and shared with the NS shows Polanski's personal approval his personal net approval rating has hit a low of -35 per cent and one in four people now think the party has a serious anti-Semitism problem. Some polls have the Greens on 7 per cent, lower than before Polanski was elected. So, where does the party go next? With Andy Burnham as prime minister, Polanski & the Greens' strategy can no longer be exclusively about criticising an unpopular Labour government - it will need to be about convincing voters they are a realistic alternative. There are figures within the party who are beginning to do this thinking. As several sources told me, for the first time Green factions are likely to form. Read more online & in this week's magazine:

A fantastic launch of the #RightToFoodCommission in Parliament, bringing together commissioners, parliamentarians, trade unions, campaigners and the communities at the heart of this fight. It has been one of the honours of my life to listen to communities across the country and work alongside people determined to end the scourge of hunger. In one of the richest countries in the world, nobody should be worried about where their next meal is coming from. Now we need Government action. A Right to Food enshrined in law, ensuring everyone can access affordable, nutritious food with dignity. Our communities cannot carry on paying the price for political decisions that drive poverty and food insecurity. Hunger is a political choice. Together, we must demand a different future. #RightToFood #HungerIsAPoliticalChoice

“The strategy is very clear!” Ashok Kumar @comrade_kumar_ on the Green's recent Zionism is Racism motion: “We’re not bags of trash floating in the ocean waiting for a wave to get us to an island. We are agents. We’re not passive recipients of history. We make the road by walking. So we want to shape and circumscribe the discourse. Just like LFI [Melanchon’s La France Insoumise] does. They throw the politics and they drag the politics to the left."

🚨 BREAKING: Almost 9 MILLION people across the UK are at risk of needing a food bank in the next year. One in five people have run out of food in past year and been unable to afford to buy more. This cannot continue. The government must act ahead of the Budget to make essentials like food and bills affordable.

I do fear that this may be @andyburnham’s undoing. Not solely because he’s approved these fields but that he does not understand the scale of the climate crisis and refuses to educate himself or inform the public - and this year the shit is going to hit the fan. When lots of people die from an extreme flood or heatwave he and all politicians wont be able to say they didn’t know it was coming. When bodies are floating down British streets climate change will suddenly become the number one issue in the country and politicians have refused to attend briefings or warn the public let alone protect us. @nebriefing now @AngelaRayner @bphillipsonMP @YvetteCooperMP @edballs @ShabanaMahmood @JohnHealey_MP #jackdaw

The 3 you mention, I agree with on some things. Not all. I don't agree with them (or you) on this. I didn't agree that the Greens should step aside for Burnham in Makerfield either. Such is life.
It’s pretty safe to say that when one has alienated the likes of Aaron Bastani, George Monbiot and Peter Tatchell (not to mention Caroline Lucas, & all the Green MPs elected in 2024), as the ‘Zionism is Racism’ has succeeded (sic) in doing, then one has lost the public debate:

The idiot’s guide to states – and their ‘rights’: 1. States exist. Some 200 of them. 2. States are the political arrangement in which a people express their self-determination. That arrangement can and does change. 3. States enjoy rights, but only against each other. They have the right, for example, not to face unprovoked aggression from another state. 4. No state has some enduring, abstract “right” to exist. Otherwise bad ones like apartheid South Africa would be unreformable. 5. Peoples, by contrast, do have a right to exist. That’s why states that commit apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide are so gravely violating international law. Because they are violating a people’s right to exist. 6. When people argue Israel has a “right” to exist, they are trying to dupe you into believing international law is fine with apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide. It isn’t. For obvious reasons, international law prefers the rights of peoples over those of states. Otherwise, no state could ever be illegitimate. Its rights would trump those of the people it rules over. 7. When someone refuses to agree that Israel has a “right” to exist, they are not being antisemitic, whatever the media keeps telling you. They are upholding international law: the precedence of peoples’ rights over those of states. 8. The claim that Israel has a “right” to exist is not what it seems. It’s really the claim that the current reality of extreme inequality between Israelis and Palestinians be set in stone. It’s the diabolical claim that Israel has a right to commit apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide against the Palestinian people.

Replying to @EdwardJDavey
The most grotesque mistake the Lib Dems have made to date will return to haunt them. The vast majority of the public see Zionism as a fully weaponised colonial ideology with a track record of decades of atrocities. I am sick to my stomach watching the spineless British establishment kowtow to Israel, while relinquishing its own sovereignty to such a despicable and sick foreign society. - For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Whatever excesses Israel commits in the name of Zionism, it is clear to me that the good people of this world are pushing back and rejecting their actions.
