It has become almost conventional wisdom, across the political spectrum, that Washington has spent the past few years lurching from one blunder to the next, weakening its global position in the process. By antagonising Russia and China at the same time, it has pushed the two powers into precisely the strategic embrace that American strategists long regarded as something to be avoided at all costs. By weaponising the dollar and the US-centric financial system, and aggressively imposing tariffs on friends and foes alike, it has merely spurred the countries of the Global South to accelerate de-dollarisation and delink from the Western-controlled trade and financial architecture — strengthening BRICS and further eroding its own position. Its unconditional support for Israel and its open contempt for international law, now effectively official policy under Trump, have done lasting damage to its legitimacy and “soft power”. The attack on Iran is typically framed as merely the latest entry in this long list of blunders: the US, many claim, has suffered a strategic defeat, having failed to achieve regime change while sustaining massive, possibly irreversible, damage to its bases in the Middle East. Finally, there is broad agreement that Ukraine — and by extension NATO — has lost the war, dealing yet another devastating blow to American power.
All this is held up as evidence that the US has entered a phase of terminal decline, one that will inevitably force its elites to accept a diminished global role and accommodate themselves to the reality of multipolarity. The prospect elicits either panic or hope, depending on whom you ask. Those who favour a globally dominant America, leading the “free world” against “authoritarianism”, decry these developments — and, naturally, blame Trump for them. US critics, anti-imperialists and the pro-multipolarity crowd welcome them. Yet these two ideologically distant camps largely share the same diagnosis: Washington’s brazen attempts to defend its hegemony have failed, and indeed backfired. I have made this argument myself on more than one occasion. Lately, however — as someone who belongs squarely in the pro-multipolarity camp — I have started to wonder whether we have allowed our wishes to get ahead of reality. I don’t dispute most of the individual observations listed above. What I question is the conclusion drawn from them: that the US is being forced, by the sheer weight of its own mistakes, to make room for a multipolar order. The evidence of the past year points in a different direction, and nowhere more clearly than in the growing paralysis of BRICS itself.
When talking about multipolarity, it is important to distinguish between relative weight and relative power. Relative weight can be measured objectively, and in this sense — especially in economic terms — multipolarity is already a reality: the US accounts for a much smaller share of the global economy than it did even a decade ago, largely thanks to the rise of new economic powers, first and foremost China. But has this decline in relative weight been matched by a comparable decline in power, economic or otherwise? That depends on how one defines power, which is a far harder thing to measure. For the purposes of this argument, I will define it as the ability to bend others to your will. This can be achieved by structural or by openly coercive means: by controlling the structures within which others operate or by inflicting — or threatening to inflict — harm.
Structural power tends to enjoy a high degree of legitimacy because it operates within a system of generally accepted “rules”, such as laws — even though it, too, includes repressive tools to sanction misbehaviour. Openly coercive power, on the other hand, is generally considered illegitimate. A state exercises power over its citizens in structural terms; a crime syndicate mainly exercises power over people in openly coercive terms. Defiance is punished in both cases, but in the former, obedience derives not simply from fear of punishment but from the sense that following the established rules is the “normal” and “correct” way to behave.
The same distinction applies to international relations. Since the end of the Second World War, the US has enjoyed an enormous degree of structural power. Through its control of global financial, logistical and military infrastructure, and its unparalleled ability to project force around the globe (and to destabilise countries by covert means), it has been able to exact a high degree of compliance: from the client states of the collective West during the Cold War and from most of the world during the post-Cold War unipolar moment.
For most countries — or at least for the elites running them — abiding by US-dictated rules came to seem the natural and correct course of action. This was certainly true of the collective West. The countries of the Global South, meanwhile, felt they had little alternative, given Washington’s willingness to resort to economic punishment (sanctions, financial exclusion) and even mass violence against rule-breakers and non-aligned states, from Yugoslavia to Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. Crucially, the US managed to retain a degree of legitimacy even for these actions by framing them as necessary to uphold the so-called “rules-based order” — a political fiction, but one that exercised a powerful hegemonic sway, at least in the West.
So what has changed in the new multipolar phase? There is little doubt that US structural power — its ability to exact compliance simply by virtue of controlling the world’s material and immaterial infrastructure, and to impose severe costs on rivals without resorting to military force — has diminished over the past decade. This is not just a consequence of China’s rise to economic, industrial, technological and military superpower status. It also reflects the fact that Beijing has quietly been building an alternative global financial, economic and governance infrastructure that allows countries to trade and coordinate outside the US-controlled, dollar-centric system — a project that has gathered pace in response to Washington’s weaponisation of that system.
This is the main reason why the sanctions regime imposed on Russia, the most extensive ever devised, has failed to cripple the country: China and many non-Western countries refused to go along with it. This has arguably been one of the greatest achievements of the China-led BRICS: providing a concrete infrastructure through which to advance multipolarisation — not just by boosting the relative economic weight of non-Western countries, but by reducing the structural power of the US-led system and offering countries, at least potentially, an escape from the global matrix of American control. In this second sense, too, multipolarity is a reality in the making.
Yet the second Trump administration has also exposed the limits of this process.

In my latest article I argue that predictions about the inevitable rise of multipolarity might have been premature. US structural power has eroded, but it remains formidable and is actually growing in Europe, among its Asian allies and in Latin America. Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s weaponisation of the dollar-centric system and use of raw military violence has seriously disrupted key links in the multipolar system and opened huge rifts among BRICS members, by pushing them into wildly different strategic positions. Thus far, non-Western countries have proven to be woefully ill-equipped to deal with the Western-led assault. Can a world in which the US remains free to commit repeated acts of military and economic aggression, unchecked by any other power, really be called multipolar in any meaningful sense?

“China doesn't have elections! Every Election Day proves America is better than China!”
Does holding elections automatically make the United States a better country than China? I don't believe so. And today's midterm elections are a perfect example of why👇
Today, millions of Americans will head to the polls to vote. If Democrats win both the House and Senate, they'll control Congress and have the power to block much of Trump's legislative agenda for the next two years.
But think about the incredible irony here.
For millions of Americans, the BEST possible outcome of this election is simply preventing the other side from accomplishing anything.
That's it.
Not building better infrastructure. Not improving healthcare. Not investing in education. Not fixing America's crumbling public transportation systems.
Just stopping the other party.
We've reached a point where political gridlock is celebrated as a victory.
And somehow, we're supposed to believe this automatically makes our political system superior to China's?
Let's look at the other side.
China doesn't have competitive national elections where citizens can vote the Communist Party out of power. That's a fact. China is governed by the CPC, although eight other legally recognized political parties also exist.
But here's the fundamental difference I see between these two systems:
In America, you CAN change the party, but you often CAN'T change the policy.
In China, you CAN'T change the ruling party, but you CAN change the policy.
For decades, Americans have elected Republicans and Democrats who promise change. Yet Washington continues pouring enormous resources into overseas military operations while Americans struggle with healthcare costs, aging infrastructure, and an increasingly unaffordable cost of living.
Meanwhile, China has spent decades investing heavily in high-speed rail, highways, airports, hospitals, schools, and modern metro systems.
The infrastructure that millions of ordinary people actually use every single day.
China has built the world's largest high-speed rail network. Entire cities have been transformed. Hundreds of millions of people have escaped extreme poverty over the past several decades.
These are tangible improvements in people's lives.
I think we should judge a government by what it actually DELIVERS to its citizens?
Now, I'm grateful to have the right to vote as an American. I value that right enormously.
But I'm also deeply frustrated that the best outcome many Americans can realistically hope for today is two more years of political paralysis.
Two more years of Republicans and Democrats fighting each other while the country's biggest problems remain unresolved.
Meanwhile, China will continue pursuing its long-term development priorities, investing in infrastructure, technology, manufacturing, and economic growth.
Democracy should be judged by more than the ability to cast a ballot. Government should also be judged by its ability to improve people's lives.
I'll let you decide which system is delivering better results.

There is widespread confusion among Democrats this morning, after they accidentally won the US midterms despite their best efforts to lose. They now face their worst nightmare: enthused voters who actually expect something from them.
They are weighing up whether to condemn James Talarico and Abdul El-Sayed for giving people false hope, or pretend to be just like them. Perhaps the smart move will be to take the credit, just like that kid who pushes a train in that meme. Whichever way they go, there’s no denying this is awkward.
Ordinarily, Democrats prefer a tiny majority, so they can assign two bad cops to block every bill they introduce. Now they’ll either have to not introduce bills or pray that Trump vetoes them. Given the President spends half his time sleeping and can’t even finish his sentences, this is a risky strategy.
There is every chance that Americans end up with something good entirely by accident. I wouldn’t even rule out Trump forgetting to veto the release of the Epstein files. As you can imagine, the corporate donors who own both sides have steam coming out of their ears.
Democrats were so determined to lose that one of them endorsed a Republican to stop a Muslim from taking Michigan. Unfortunately, 60% of Michigan’s Jews turned out to be antisemites and voted for Halal law and Sharia meat. Chuck Schumer and Haley Stevens are losing their fucking minds.
It’s fair to say neither side wanted a blue wave to sweep across the US. Unfortunately, the Republicans’ strategy of saying a load of racist stuff and doing endless war backfired. Americans are only in favour of those things when they can afford fuel and groceries. Now that everything’s getting expensive, they are going cold on the whole imperialism thing.
President Trump was left scratching his head, wondering how he lost so badly, despite winning the Iran war 27 times this year. I don’t have the heart to tell him that Pete Hegseth lied. After all, he’s still mourning Lindsey Graham who could only watch on from hell as the results came in.
Without Lindsey Graham’s presence, the axis of evil is falling apart. The warmongers don’t even know who they are anymore. The result broke John Bolton so badly that his moustache crawled away and said it’s getting a divorce.
Bolton criticised Trump for his forever war in Iran and for surrounding himself with yes men. Given that he’s never seen a war that didn’t arouse him, this is deeply troubling.
The Republicans are facing a major identity crisis. If they’re no longer the party of paedophilia and genocide, what else can they offer? They’ve even lost the ability to cheat properly. They somehow lost the seats they’d gerrymandered, and to make matters worse, someone forgot to flip the voting machines.
We saw state after state change colour after people who normally prefer the greater evil chose the lesser one. Even Texas turned blue, despite scientists insisting this was physically impossible. It was supposed to be one of the three laws of the universe. You can’t go faster than light, Trump can’t be trusted around school girls, and Texas can’t turn blue.
For the longest time everyone just accepted this is how reality works. Now the Democrats have taken every office in Texas: Senator, Governor, Lt Governor, Attorney General, Land Commissioner, Comptroller of Public Accounts, Agriculture Commissioner, Railroad Commissioner, and all four Supreme Court Justices.
I can’t bear how embarrassing this must be for Elon Musk who tried desperately to buy Texas for $212 million. Turns out this was the biggest waste of money since he spent $40 billion to rename Twitter, only for everyone to keep calling it Twitter. Imagine being the world’s richest man, owning the most powerful propaganda tool in history, and still no one listens to you.
At least it’s all bad news today. Israel has disputed the claim that Iran achieved regime change in the US, after it successfully installed AIPAC Shakur as House Speaker. If anyone can let Democrat voters down as badly as President Biden, it’s Hakeem Jeffries.
The first black House Speaker in US history has already announced his determination to be the worst black House Speaker. Americans are terrified this might inspire Kamala Harris to do another presidential run.

Dear MAGA, let me explain something.
You have been taught that anything with the word social in it is communism. It isn’t. Social Security isn’t communism. Medicare isn’t communism. And neither is the public school your children attend or the fire department that saves your house.
Norway and Denmark are capitalist countries. People own businesses, buy houses, make fortunes, invest in stocks and own guns. The difference is that their governments make capitalism work for ordinary people, not just billionaires.
Here is what that means in everyday life. You get cancer. You receive treatment without facing a ruinous hospital bill. Your wife has a baby. She gets months of paid parental leave. Your child wants to attend university. Tuition is free at public universities for eligible students.
You work hard. You get five weeks of paid vacation. You lose your job. There is a safety net to help you get back on your feet And none of this requires giving up your house, your truck, your religion or your freedom.
Now here is the part you really need to understand.
You are already paying taxes. The question is what you get back.
In Europe, more of that money comes back to ordinary families through healthcare, education and financial security.
In America, politicians have convinced millions of working people that asking for those things is socialism, while demanding lower taxes for billionaires is freedom.
You have been persuaded to fight against benefits you would personally enjoy, in order to protect fortunes you will never possess.
Elon Musk does not need you to defend his wallet. Your family needs you to defend yours.

This is a political superpower the likes of which the world has perhaps never seen to this extent.
It is time for President Trump to USE this power to bring about an end to the Iran War.
While the Israeli Lobby and Iran Hawks will immediately cry and rant about “weakness”, this will show STRENGTH to the American people.
The STRENGTH to put America FIRST.
The STRENGTH to realize when mistakes were made.
The STRENGTH to avoid the exact kind of forever wars he campaigned on avoiding.
President Trump has a never-before-seen ability to SELL, SELL, SELL.
It is time for him to USE this incredible superpower to end this war before it spirals out of control.
