When I worked at a Title 1 public school we begged them to get rid of cellphones, made learning impossible They refused until cellphones were used to capture multiple prison-riot style fights and sex acts in the bathroom that ended up on the news Schools aren’t banning cellphones because of education, they don’t care They’re banning them because they’re revealing that public schools are prisons and abuse factories
Starting next school year, a bell-to-bell cell phone ban will take effect in every single Pennsylvania classroom. We’re getting back to the basics and keeping our classrooms focused on learning.

I got this joke when I was 8. The internet revealed to me that there are now 20 years old who don’t get it.

As an aside, IQ strongly correlates with walking speed. The correlation is, like, extremely significant. There are essentially zero outliers. Top quintile walkers are a full standard deviation smarter than bottom quintile walkers.
No one in nyc walks fast anymore FUCK
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
A 2019 Dunedin study reports moderate correlation (β=0.38) between midlife IQ and gait speed with ~16-point mean quintile difference. "Essentially zero outliers" does not match this association's strength. jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman…

Let’s get this straight: at 2:30 a.m., a 71-year-old man wanders the freeway. A Tesla on FSD avoids him well, only skimming his side, but another car hits and kills him. What’s going on with these stories flooding the news?

This was my Picard/3 lights moment 5th grade the teacher gave us this question Everyone except me got it wrong, including her She got the whole class to "explain" it to me Math is just logic, there is no ambiguity, I could not see their answer Then she assigned a girl to take me aside and lecture me Most Soviet experience of my life, including my north Korea trip At parent/teacher conference she told my folks that she thought about it later that night and realized I was right Never said anything to me or apologized in front of the class In a free society she would have been put against the wall for doing what she did to a kid
Very tricky. Read carefully.

The American auto industry in the 70s and 80s didn’t lose on engineering. It lost on headcount. Elon told this old joke on Rogan: Japanese boat: eight people rowing, one steering. American boat: one person rowing, eight steering. They lose. Fire the rower. That was Detroit. It’s also most companies now. Layers of people who want to decide, not enough people who just want to finish. Meetings pile up, the work slows, and the last person still doing something gets blamed. The ones who actually row are usually the ones who end up gone.

The takeaway of this php thing should not be “the world is ending today”. Rather it should be “the software status quo was bad, and you should assume 70% of the Internet is already rooted by one three letter agency. AI helped us catch this and remove it from ongoing risk”

Plastic is ugly because it’s cheap. That’s to say it lets people who would never be allowed to work with expensive materials become creators. AI is similar. It lets anyone become an animator, and all they make is super heroes smashing into each other.
Plastic really sums up the dilemma of modernity. Increases net health and comfort in many ways. But it's ugly and its ubiquity degraded creation in a very real way, made almost every item ugly. Your life will never be as beautiful as before plastic.

It would probably be good to put a moratorium on humanities PhDs for a while. Some subjects are just played out - we don’t need another analysis of Hamlet. This pressure always to say something new - like it’s a discovery in the natural sciences - drives a lot of bad scholarship.
🧵The number of humanities dissertations produced annually has declined by almost half, according to a new analysis. The same report shows that language related to power and identity surged while treatments of “Western,” “European,” and “American” turned increasingly negative.

Most of our genetic data is human-centric, which makes sense. But whole genome data has way more power when used outside humans. Many biotechs are academia 2.0 and don't approach the indsutry like a company and instead everything just focuses on pharma pay days like 23andme. If you look in the beef cattle industry. It is still rare for someone to use arrays that cost $50 even much kess genome sequencing. We could have so much better beef. Pets are constantly being breed with genetic diseases or are so inbred that they have issues. No breeders I have talked to use any genetics. In the horse world, people spend $1M or more on a horse and don't sequence it. there existed like 400 genomes of racing horse breeds before we started even then none of them were high end performance horses. There are uses for genome data, we are just looking in all the wrong places.
It's why 23andMe never turned a profit. Customers rarely returned to their results, and the company never figured out how to use its massive trove of genetic data to develop drugs.
