I've been living with this "uncomfortable truth" of cheaper ongoing motoring, no breakdowns, and never having run out of "fuel" since 2014. First EV (a pre-owned, low mileage generation 1.5 LEAF) was £16,500. Handed on to my daughter who only sold it earlier this year, after 12 years of trouble -free motoring. Can't say not having to think about paying for engine oil and oil filters, spark plugs, timing belts, engine air filters, fuel filters, exhaust pipes and silencers, catalytic converters or DPFs, AdBlue fluid, clutches and dual-mass flywheels, gearbox fluid, and engine coolant flushes… has been much of an uncomfortable truth. Buy what you want but stop pretending that synthetic fuels or hydrogen (which have apparently been on the cusp of availability for years) are a reality now, or indeed telling a young person that they have to spend £45,000 on an electric Kia. That is just silly. Buy electric or don't, but stop making such ridiculous straw men arguments when thousands of people now have years of EV experience behind them and know the reality for themselves. But happy to let the market decide. Let us know how you get on with your synthetic fuel or hydrogen fuel cell car, Richard, and the ongoing costs.
