ERITREA WAS NOT BROKEN THEN AND WILL NOT BE BROKEN TOMORROW HISTORY BEARS WITNESS By Ahmed Ibrahim History has a way of exposing the folly of those who mistake a nation’s suffering for its defeat, its patience for weakness, and its desire for peace for a willingness to surrender. Few nations illustrate this truth more powerfully than Eritrea. … To declare that Eritrea was never broken is not to deny the depth of that suffering, minimize the sacrifices of its people, or pretend that its long struggle for independence was free of setbacks, divisions, and painful reversals. ETHIOPIA: NOBEL PEACE PRIZE RECIPIENT STIRS UP TROUBLE IN THE HORN OF AFRICA By Martin Zimmermann Since early October, reports of an escalating threat of war in the Horn of Africa have dominated the headlines, with Ethiopia at the center of the growing tensions. …There are three other landlocked countries in the world that maintain their own navies: Bolivia, Paraguay, and Laos. …The time has come for the UN, the AU, and other influential actors on the international stage to take an unequivocal stand and make it clear to the Ethiopian government that respecting Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is not optional but an obligation under international law. WE HAVE SEEN ENOUGH WAR! MUST ANOTHER GENERATION DIE? By Mebrak Ghebreweldi I am writing this with tears in my eyes and memories that have haunted me for more than forty years. As I watch the dangerous developments between Ethiopia and Eritrea, I cannot remain silent. I know what war means. I know Ethiopian political leaders speak of military victory, territorial ambition and national pride while ordinary families prepare to lose their children. BRINKMANSHIP IN THE HORN OF AFRICA: A DANGEROUS GAMBLE WITH REGIONAL CONSEQUENCES By Tedros Goitom … In recent years, Ethiopia’s leadership under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has increasingly relied on confrontational rhetoric, military campaigns, and coercive approaches to address problems that are fundamentally political, structural, and historical in nature. The consequences have been devastating. … The greatest irony of the present moment is that policies ostensibly pursued in the name of strengthening the Ethiopian state may be accelerating its fragmentation. AS THE HORN OF AFRICA FACES A CROSSROADS, ERITREA RESISTS THE CURRENT By Sirak Kifle …The Horn of Africa is undoubtedly at an existential turning point. If current trends among Eritrea’s neighbours persist, the worst-case scenario is no longer unthinkable. DELUSIONS FROM THE PRECIPICE: ABIY’S HORRIFIC HUMAN AND FINANCIAL PRICE OF PROLONGED, VIOLENT HUBRIS By Abraha T. Chealo When a leader of a nation resorts to broadcasting on state television pugnacious threats directed at a neighbor’s sovereignty and belittling its cities all the whilst his own house burns to the ground, it is quite obvious that it is the desperate political theater of a failing leadership manufacturing external bogeymen to conceal catastrophic domestic collapses and masking unprovoked expansionist ambitions behind the lofty language of national destiny. ABIY’S BORROWED RHETORIC AND BROKEN REALITIES An Affront to Heroes: Abiy Ahmed’s Mashujaa Day Address Rings Hollow By David Yeh …The resemblance is difficult to miss. Kennedy: “Geography has made us neighbors.” Abiy: “Geography made us neighbours.” Kennedy: “History has made us friends.” Abiy: “History made us brothers.” Kennedy: “Economics has made us partners.” Abiy: “Our choices must make us partners in shared prosperity.” …The contradiction becomes sharper when the promise of regional harmony is placed alongside Ethiopia’s own recent experience of armed conflict, political fragmentation, and mass displacement. ABIY’S RED SEA AMBITIONS WILL SHATTER AGAINST ERITREAN RESILIENCE By Mhretab Andebrhan …Ethiopia faces serious internal challenges, including armed conflicts, political fragmentation, and the unfinished work of national reconciliation. These problems require effective governance, inclusive political dialogue, and accountable institutions. It is evident that the regime manufactures external conflicts specifically to divert domestic focus. Using foreign territorial ambitions as a tool for internal consumption allows the government to consolidate support while masking severe domestic instability. …Eritreans have every reason to insist that the independence achieved through decades of sacrifice be respected without qualification. The country must protect its territorial integrity while preserving diplomatic channels and supporting a regional order based on international law. ...when an observer looks at major historical junctures in the history of Eritrea involving the UN and the OAU)/AU, an unsettling pattern emerges: ... the international organizations have failed to uphold the very principles upon which they were founded, leaving Eritrea and its people to bear the consequences. @AmbStesfamariam @Eritrea_UN @Chinamission2un @franceonu @ETMissionUN @UKUN_NewYork @USUN @BahrainMsnNY @ColombiaONU @RDCongoONU @Denmark_UN @GRUN_NY @LatviaUN_NY @LibMissionUN @PakistanUN_NY @SomaliaatUN @panamaonuny
Will the UNSC and the AU Rein in Ethiopian’s Expansionism and Aggression? by Adulis Tewolde *...Today, the Horn of Africa confronts another dangerous juncture. The current Ethiopian ruling party has explicitly framed 'sovereign access to the sea' as a 'strategic imperative', that must be 'ascertained through negotiations if possible and by force if necessary'. Ethiopia’s intensive and provocative pronouncements conducted for over three years now as well as associated acts are indeed tantamount to a declaration of war.  And finally, on 9 October this month, Ethiopia formally notified the UN Security Council that it has declared war against Eritrea under the preposterous allegations of 'Eritrea’s invasion''. *"...Both the UN and the AU are intergovernmental organizations designed to reflect the collective position of their member states. In this context, it is imperative that these institutions uphold, without any equivocation, the fundamental pillars of the UN Charter and the AU’s Constitutive Act on the full respect of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all Member States. Indeed, respect for these principles is sine qua non for peaceful relations between States". *"...Eritrea has already paid a heavy price for the international community’s past failures. Its long struggle for independence and its insistence on the implementation of the EEBC decisions underscore the importance of defending sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes". *"The question now is whether the institutions established to safeguard international peace and security will fulfill their responsibilities. Will the Security Council, the African Union, and the wider international community rein in Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party expansionist ambitions and deter aggression? Or will the defense of the UN Charter’s most fundamental principles once again be left to Eritrea alone, with all the catastrophic costs that such a failure entails". shabait.com/2026/10/21/will-…

WILL THE UN AND AU FAIL ERITREA AGAIN? By Alula Frezghi Eritrea’s history presents an enduring challenge to the credibility of the international order: what value do sovereignty, self-determination, and territorial integrity possess when the institutions established to protect them fail to act? From the troubled international handling of Eritrea’s decolonization to the prolonged non-implementation of the Eritrea–Ethiopia boundary ruling, the record reveals a consequential gap between international principles and their enforcement. Today, renewed tensions between Eritrea and Ethiopia place that gap under another test. The question is no longer merely historical. It concerns whether the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and their member states will defend the rules governing relations among sovereign nations before another regional confrontation escalates. Had constructive engagements with H.E. Mike Waltz, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, and Ambassador Jeffrey Bartos, U.S. Representative to the UN for Management and Reform. Discussed recent developments in the #Horn of #Africa and presented #Eritrea’s perspective on the evolving regional situation. Reiterated that there is no "crisis" between #Eritrea and #Ethiopia, and underscored the need for the international community to pay closer attention to the worrisome developments within #Ethiopia. The most important issue is for #Ethiopia to respect #Eritrea's sovereign territories and stop diverting attention from its domestic issues. Outlined #Ethiopia|s three-year-long campaign concerning the Red Sea and its continued threats against #Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including threats to annex sovereign #Eritrean territories. Urged those with leverage to use it responsibly and proactively, to prevent unnecessary wars in the region. To refrain from making statments that embolden #Ethiopia's leadership. Also briefed them on #Ethiopia’s expulsion of #Eritrea’s representatives accredited to the @_AfricanUnion Union and the @UN Economic Commission for #Africa, as well as the breakdown of diplomatic relations initiated by #Ethiopia and reciprocated by #Eritrea. #Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. Preventing renewed conflict requires addressing the underlying threats, upholding international law, and acting before issues escalate...

ERITREA’S SOVEREIGNTY IS NOT NEGOTIABLE: THE FINALITY OF THE ALGIERS AGREEMENT AND THE CASE FOR ANTICIPATORY SELF-DEFENCE UNDER THE UN CHARTER When threats become an existential danger, international law must not be reduced to a demand that the threatened state wait to be attacked By PI Demoz Eritrea’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence are not bargaining chips. Ethiopia’s strategic ambitions and desire for Red Sea access cannot override international law or reopen territorial questions already settled through binding international agreements. The central issue is twofold: whether Ethiopia can lawfully challenge Eritrea’s sovereignty over Assab, and whether credible evidence of an imminent armed attack could justify anticipatory self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. … The United Nations Security Council must treat credible threats against Eritrea’s territorial integrity seriously. Its responsibility includes examining authenticated evidence, discouraging military escalation, and reinforcing respect for the Algiers Agreement, the EEBC determination, and the 2018 Jeddah commitments. THREE SCENARIOS FACING COLONEL ABIY AHMED’S POTEMKIN PARTY REGIME AND ITS TIGRAYAN ENABLERS By Simon K. Hagos The political and security landscape in the Horn of Africa is entering a critical phase. Ethiopia’s Bigwig Colonel Abiy Ahmed and his Potemkin Party regime face difficult choices as tensions with Eritrea and internal political instability continue to shape the region. For those Tigrayan political actors who have aligned themselves with or enabled Abiy’s political agenda, the coming period may prove equally consequential. THE UAE’S BID FOR UN POWER A STATE ACCUSED OF WAR CRIMES SHOULD NOT LEAD THE INSTITUTIONS MEANT TO STOP THEM By David Yeh …International human rights organizations and diplomatic opponents argue that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) should not hold prominent United Nations positions due to allegations of war crimes, human rights violations, and actions that directly undermine the UN’s foundational mission. … The UAE has actively promoted Lana Nusseibeh, Minister of State and former UAE Permanent Representative to the UN, as a potential late-stage candidate to become the next UN Secretary General. The Profile: Nusseibeh gained widespread international recognition during the UAE’s 2022–2023 tenure on the UN Security Council, balancing delicate diplomacy such as condemning Hamas’s October 7 attacks while simultaneously criticizing Israel’s subsequent military actions in Gaza. ETHIOPIA AT THE EDGE OF DISINTEGRATION Abiy Ahmed’s Politics of War, Foreign Intervention, and the Threat to the Horn of Africa By Ahmed Ibrahim Ethiopia stands at a dangerous crossroads, and pretending otherwise serves neither Ethiopians nor their neighbors. THE RED SEA GAMBLE: ABIY AHMED’S EXPANSIONIST OVERREACH The most dangerous conflicts rarely begin with the first bullet. They begin when a political idea makes aggression sound reasonable. Ethiopia’s recent Red Sea rhetoric does exactly that. What should be a practical discussion about trade access has been recast as a national grievance, a historical wound, and a question of destiny. That shift is dangerous because Eritrea’s independence, borders, and territorial integrity are not unresolved matters. International agreements, treaties, and legal processes have affirmed them. The issue, therefore, is not whether Ethiopia needs access to the sea. The issue is whether Ethiopia’s leadership is willing to pursue that access without violating a sovereign neighbor’s rights. ERITREA’S RESTRAINT IS NOT WEAKNESS: THREATEN ASSAB, AND FACE THE CONSEQUENCES …There comes a point when patience ceases to serve peace and begins to be mistaken for permission. ABIY AHMED AND GANG TRYING TO REACH THE ROOF ARE DROPPING ETHIOPIA Ethiopia’s Assab Gamble and the Perils of Strategic Overreach There is an old Ethiopian proverb: “የቆጡን አወርድ ብላ የብብቷን ጣለች“ “Reaching for the shelf, she lost what was in her grasp.” A country already struggling with war, political fragmentation, economic hardship, displacement, and deepening mistrust among its peoples is being encouraged to look beyond its borders for a prize that does not belong to it. Instead of repairing what has been damaged at home, Ethiopia’s leadership has elevated sovereign access to the Red Sea—and increasingly the question of sovereign control over a coastline belonging to another state—into a supposed matter of national destiny.
