My sister-in-law called my 8-year-old son rude in front of the whole family because he refused to hug his uncle.
We were having Sunday lunch at my mother-in-law’s house. My son greeted everyone politely but stayed close to me when his uncle opened his arms for a hug.
My sister-in-law immediately began scolding him about respect and good manners.
I calmly explained that he had already greeted everyone and shouldn’t be forced to hug anyone if he didn’t want to.

I told my husband our newborn daughter had died during childbirth. Eight years later, he discovered she was alive, and the person who helped me hide her was his own mother.
When I gave birth, my marriage was falling apart. My husband, Daniel, had been having an affair with his colleague, and I had already decided to leave him.
Then our daughter was born with a serious heart condition requiring expensive treatment.
Daniel's family insisted she should be treated at a specialist hospital. I refused their money because I didn't want to owe a family that had made me feel worthless.
His mother, Margaret, offered to help me get the baby transferred to another hospital. Instead, she arranged for my daughter to stay with her sister temporarily while I recovered.

Last year mum called me crying. Someone had sent her a video. In it I was beating a girl I had been seeing, the same girl I told her was “just a friend.” She watched it more than once. She said she kept waiting for the person on the screen to stop being me.
When I got home she was sitting on the floor. She looked at me the way you look at someone you no longer recognize and asked if I had anything to say. I told her I was sorry. She nodded once, then told me to pack my things and leave before she changed her mind about calling my dad because he leaves elsewhere with his second wife.
She has not said she is proud of me since.

女性は自分を指さした。
「私だけど。どの車？」
窓の外を指さすと、女性は私の車を見て、すぐに察したようだった。
「ああ、あの白い車ね。あなたもケンジさん経由？」
「ケンジをご存じなんですか？」
女性は少し笑った。
「4月に、うちの駐車場で勝手にお金を集めているのを見つけたのよ。警察に相談することもできたけどね」
私は思わず聞き返した。
「えっ、じゃあ、最初から知っていたんですか？」

With Carrie returning for Season 2, I hope the series understands that more violence does not automatically mean better horror.
The first season has the opportunity to explore the psychological consequences of Carrie’s story instead of relying on the same shocking moments that made the original famous.
What interests me most is the damage left behind: the people who participated in the cruelty, the people who watched it happen, and the people who convinced themselves they were innocent.
If the next season only tries to make Carrie more frightening, it could miss the very thing that makes her story disturbing.
The aftermath may be more revealing than another explosion of power.
