Reports of attacks on civilians in #Ethiopia's Amhara and Tigray regions are deeply disturbing. Among those reportedly killed in the Jaari 2 displacement camp in Amhara were children, including a newborn. In another attack in Rama, Tigray, several people were reportedly killed while trying to get food.
While these are the latest incidents, drone attacks and civilian casualties have tragically become frequent across Ethiopia.
The violence in northern Ethiopia is pushing an already fragile health system closer to collapse. Hospitals face shortages of health workers, medicines, and equipment. Ambulance services are severely limited. Insecurity is obstructing the delivery of life-saving medical supplies to some areas. @WHO and @UN partners are working around the clock to deliver additional much needed medical supplies to all the affected regions.
As fighting continues, more people are likely to lose access to essential health care, including emergency services, maternal and child health care, and treatment for diseases.
Civilians must be protected. Health workers and humanitarian supplies must be allowed to reach those in need.
The most courageous choose peace. The best medicine is peace.

AEPAC welcomes the bipartisan congressional letter led by Representatives Chellie Pingree and Sara Jacobs, signed by numerous members of the U.S. House of Representatives, urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take decisive action on Ethiopia's escalating conflict. The lawmakers specifically call for a high-level U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, an immediate ceasefire, renewed peace negotiations, protection of civilians, unrestricted humanitarian access, restoration of emergency assistance, and targeted sanctions against individuals responsible for atrocities and fueling the conflict.
AEPAC also recognizes the September 28 congressional appeal led by Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Cory Booker, Chris Coons, Jeff Merkley, Chris Van Hollen, and Tim Kaine, urging Secretary Rubio to engage Ethiopian authorities and relevant armed actors to halt renewed hostilities and return to mediation.
AEPAC strongly supports these congressional recommendations and urges Secretary Rubio to ensure that American diplomatic engagement addresses not only the danger of a wider regional war but also the ongoing killings, drone attacks, religious persecution, arbitrary detentions, and forced displacement of Ethiopian civilians.

🚨 Oromia Region security forces and Qeerroo (Oromo youth) massacre over 40 Amhara civilians, including a 10-day-old infant and six children, in Horo Guduru Wollega; over 160,000 displaced from Gida Ayana
On October 26th, 2026, attacks against Amhara civilians continued across Abi Dengoro Woreda, Horo Guduru Wollega Zone, Oromia Region. According to survivors Ethio Focus News spoke to, Oromia Regional Security Forces and armed Qeerroo (Oromo youth), supported by Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) heavy artillery, carried out attacks in Tulu Gana, Chancho, Gulma and Tulu Lenca kebeles, killing more than 40 civilians, including women, children and elderly residents.
Among those killed with machetes and knives were prominent local merchant Ato Ali Adem, his wife and their six children, as well as a mother who had given birth just 10 days earlier, her newborn infant and other young children. Bodies of victims remained uncollected along the main road connecting Tulu Gana and Chancho Gulma. Residential homes and commercial establishments in Gulma Town were looted and burned, while livestock were stolen and slaughtered near Village 23 School.
Internally displaced civilians sheltering at Menageria Kidane Mihret Church were left vulnerable after ENDF personnel and local municipal officials evacuated toward the Village 15–Gutin exit. Additional attacks and displacement were reported around the Menageria school and bus station area.
Meanwhile, more than 160,000 Amhara civilians have been displaced from Gida Ayana Woreda between August 18th and October 26th. The displacement followed sustained attacks across Gida Ayana, Gutin, Village 23, Endicho, Waja and surrounding areas. Thousands of women, children and elderly residents fled into forests, crossed the Anger River toward Benishangul-Gumuz Region, or attempted to escape through Nekemte Airport, where displaced civilians encountered excessive ticket prices and additional pressure.
🚨 Over 300 Amhara civilians killed by ENDF and Gada Commando forces in five days of attacks across Wollega, Oromia region; 13 villages and three churches destroyed as thousands flee
On October 25th, 2026, attacks against Amhara civilians entered their fifth consecutive day across East Wollega and Horo Guduru Wollega Zones, Oromia Region. According to local sources Ethio Focus News spoke to, more than 300 civilians have been killed and thousands displaced in operations involving the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF), Oromia Region Gada Commando, Gachana Sirna and Repelola security units, the Abiy regime-backed Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) faction led by Jaal Mose, and armed Qeerroo (Oromo youth) militias.
The attacks extended across eight woredas, including Gida Ayana, Anger Gutin, Abidengoro, Charda, Jarti and Kiremu. In Abidengoro Woreda, violence was reported in Tulu Gana Kebele, Chancho Town, Wollo Sefer and the Bejet area, where civilian settlements and religious institutions were targeted.
Over the five-day period, 13 historical villages were completely burned and destroyed, including Wollo Sefer, a settlement established in 1964. Chancho Town was also set ablaze, while three churches in the Bejet area were burned down. Thousands of displaced civilians have fled into surrounding communities, facing severe humanitarian conditions. Federal forces also conducted four drone strikes targeting civilian settlements.
Beginning at approximately 11:00 AM on October 25th, phone and internet data services were shut down across eight affected woredas, including Gida Ayana, Anger Gutin, Abidengoro, Charda, Jarti and Kiremu, severely restricting communication and the flow of information from areas experiencing ongoing attacks.
Dozens of Christians have been massacred in a horrific attack in Ethiopia. The BBC is reporting that more than 60 Orthodox Christians were killed in a series of attacks in the Oromia region. While some details remain difficult to verify independently, and it's unclear why they were killed, please pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Ethiopia. 🙏

AMERICAN ETHIOPIAN PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (AEPAC)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CALL FOR URGENT U.S. DIPLOMATIC ACTION ON THE KILLINGS OF CHRISTIAN CIVILIANS AND CLERGY IN ETHIOPIA
The American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC) expresses its profound alarm over continued reports of the killings and abductions of Christian civilians and attacks affecting clergy in Shirka and Honkolo Wabe districts of Arsi Zone, eastern Ethiopia, approximately 170 kilometers from Addis Ababa. According to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church's report, the latest incidents occurred on October 17, 2026 (Tikimt 7, 2019 E.C.) . These recurring incidents underscore the urgent need for effective civilian protection, credible investigations, and decisive action to prevent further loss of life.
The Ethiopian government has a fundamental responsibility to protect its citizens, safeguard religious communities and places of worship, and ensure that those responsible for criminal acts are held accountable. These tragedies must not become normalized, and the suffering of affected communities must not be met with indifference.
We specifically call on U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to recognize that responding to these reports is both a moral imperative and a serious diplomatic responsibility. The defense of human dignity, religious freedom, and the right to life cannot be limited to declarations of principle. When Christian civilians and clergy face recurring violence, principled leadership requires timely and meaningful engagement.
We urge Secretary Rubio to publicly address the reported killings, direct the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa to raise these concerns urgently with Ethiopian authorities, and press for concrete measures to protect Christian civilians and clergy, secure the release of abducted persons, conduct credible and impartial investigations, and hold perpetrators accountable under the law.
We are also deeply troubled by the lack of a forceful response from Western diplomatic missions, the African Union, and the United Nations. Their silence in the face of recurring reports of deadly violence is difficult to reconcile with their stated commitments to human rights, religious freedom, civilian protection, and the prevention of atrocities. International engagement must come before a crisis becomes irreversible—not after a nation has been devastated by violence that timely action might have helped prevent.
We therefore call on the United States and the wider international community to move beyond expressions of concern and pursue sustained diplomatic engagement, measurable civilian-protection commitments, and accountability. The Ethiopian government must be pressed to fulfill its responsibility to protect all citizens, regardless of religious or ethnic identity.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and express our solidarity with the injured, those reportedly abducted, affected clergy, displaced households, and all communities living under the threat of violence.
As an organization committed to strengthening U.S.–Ethiopia relations, we believe that defending human life, protecting religious freedom, and upholding human dignity are essential to our shared values and a lasting bilateral partnership.
The people of Ethiopia, especially Christians living in Arsi Zone, deserve protection, justice, and peace. The people of Ethiopia deserve a future free from recurring violence and fear. The time for meaningful action is now.

Mr. Ambassador,
Today, disturbing reports from Dera Woreda in South Gondar Zone, Amhara, a drone strike carried out by the Abiy Ahmed regime targeted a school, killing more than 24 children.
While civilians, schools, and places of worship continue to face attacks, your continued support for the Abiy administration raises serious questions about the United States' commitment to protecting innocent lives and defending human rights in Ethiopia.
Your silence and apparent unwillingness to publicly condemn these reported atrocities risk sending a dangerous message that such actions can continue without consequences.
Mr. Ambassador, how many more innocent children must die before the United States speaks out and demands accountability?
We urge you to publicly condemn attacks on civilians, call for an independent investigation into this reported tragedy, and make clear that U.S. support must never be interpreted as a license to commit human rights violations.
Mr. Ambassador,
Your continued failure to publicly condemn the reported targeting and killing of innocent civilians by the Abiy Ahmed regime risks emboldening further atrocities. Your silence, coupled with your continued support for the regime, raises serious questions about your moral responsibility and the United States' commitment to human rights.

Ambassador Massinga is an unquestioning supporter of the Ethiopian government rather than an impartial and credible mediator for peace. His bias toward the Abiy regime seriously undermines his credibility, impartiality, and ability to serve as an honest broker in resolving Ethiopia’s ongoing conflicts. Genuine peace requires balanced diplomacy, accountability, and a commitment to justice—not unconditional support for one side. His silence in the face of drone strikes, heavy weapons attacks, and the killing of innocent civilians by the Abiy regime is deeply troubling and unacceptable.
Despite mounting allegations of gross human rights violations, Ambassador Massinga continues supporting the Abiy government rather than publicly demanding accountability and the protection of innocent lives.
His apparent unwillingness to confront these atrocities raises serious questions about his judgment, impartiality, and ability to effectively represent the values and long-term strategic interests of the United States in Ethiopia.
The United States must stand for human rights, justice, and accountability—not provide diplomatic cover for a government accused of committing atrocities against its own citizens.
Ambassador Massinga has lost the confidence necessary to serve effectively in this critical diplomatic role. We should call for his resignation and demand U.S. diplomatic leadership that upholds American principles and interests.

Mr. Ambassador,
Your continued failure to publicly condemn the reported targeting and killing of innocent civilians by the Abiy Ahmed regime risks emboldening further atrocities. Your silence, coupled with your continued support for the regime, raises serious questions about your moral responsibility and the United States' commitment to human rights.
Mr. Ambassador,
Today, disturbing reports from Dera Woreda in South Gondar Zone, Amhara, a drone strike carried out by the Abiy Ahmed regime targeted a school, killing more than 24 children.
