Was literally explaining the, "society falls when old men don't plant trees they will never sit under" to my neighbor (boomer) He said he didn't get it and why would he plant trees if won't be around to see them

I’m afraid this is gonna get me blown the fuck up but I do think it’s a little odd how commonly you hear “I hate male children” as an opinion from adult women
we don't talk enough about female teachers getting harassed by little boys to the point they cry. so sick of them

They just released a dress-making game on Steam that has hit females like crack cocaine hit the inner cities in the 90s. Turns out you need to give them the content they actually want instead of butchering content they don't want to try and appeal to literally everyone. Middle managers who control every creative budget that gets too big to fail will never understand this.
Sorry to disagree with many mutuals, but the idea that making books more boyish will make boys more bookish reminds me of similar efforts to get girls into video games by changing the protagonists or stories. There may be changes on the margins but the pattern will likely persist

1.) The 'representation matters' people have nothing to say about 3-1 protagonist ratios if it concerns a demographic they hold in contempt. 2.) Boys don't decline to read because of this—books are in competition with all other media, and boys mostly experience male heroism in games (which is why the feminization of the gaming industry and characters is so explosive online) 3.) If you don't care about the principle of representation based on demographics (I don't), it is hypocritical to get too incensed about this in publishing. The market reflects what sells most reliably, but there is somewhat circular logic to the idea that creative choices increase demand. 4.) The Atlantic isn't the bad guy for reporting a phenomenon that can be observed in plain sight. But the hatred they're getting for it is revealing of how vicious the insular publishing-bookworm community is towards the interests of adolescent boys. 5.) If you refuse to accept that boys and girls are intrinsically different, and think the differences can be "fixed", everything in this report and the world generally will confuse you.

Woke fatigue was very real; whatever our goals, between ~2013 and ~2023, we got pretty obnoxious in how we pursued them and people genuinely got sick of it. But chud fatigue…they alienated the public more in two years than we managed in a decade. Incredible stuff.

There could be 100% women in the publishing industry and they’d still act like they’re swimming against some kind of patriarchal LitBro current. It’s honestly so undignified

Just a reminder, not a single white American man born after 1984 has published a work of literary fiction in The New Yorker compactmag.com/article/the-v…
It's fine for boys to like books about boys doing boy things. Maybe even written by male authors. Maybe publishers should publish those.

I used to think they were joking, but they genuinely, unironically think you can run a far left candidate in every single part of the country, and they expect every candidate to be far left whether it’s in New York City or Mississippi. They can’t conceptualize someone not as far left as them.

Can we please not treat ten-year-old boys like primitive savages who have to be "tricked" into literacy with stories of hitting things with a sharp stick, while all the civilized ten-year-old girls are dutifully reading Brontë in the corner? This is really weird.
The first novel I ever loved was the survival classic Hatchet, but recently I’ve learned that a *lot* of women despise this book, and see it is as something they were forced to read in school to entice the idiot illiterate boys in their English class. I dove into that tension!

Get me on my soap box about this and I can go for hours... I'm a teen librarian in addition to writing teen SF/F. What actually circs at my library (teen section) is about 20% books that appeal to boys and girls, 40% each books that appeal to girls or boys, and a couple % books primarily for an LGBT+ audience. Dig deeper, though, and you realize that the most popular 'boy' books are mostly either older than the teens themselves (20+ years, 40+ for things like Hatchet and Redwall) or translation of teen books from Japan. They publish far less 'boy' books than 'girl' for teens, and the teen boys are going elsewhere to find reading material. This is reinforced by a great deal of the required reading in school. Doesn't matter how much of a masterpiece Jane Eyre is, when they force it on boys who aren't interested and often aren't ready for it.

Tbf everything in The Simpsons is 50s-code, because that's when Matt Groening was a kid. The whole town going church, beehive haircuts and a children's variety show hosted by a clown were all unrelatable to 90s kids.
I think GenZ has never encountered mainline Protestants because they came of age after the decline of mainline Protestantism. The Simpsons’ churchgoing is as alien to them as a non-college-educated Homer owning a house

When progressives want to claim that winning politicians are really progressive not moderate, what they do is pick out a handful of progressive stances the candidate took. But then after the election, progressives act as ruthless enforcers of a totalizing orthodoxy.

This story is so funny 😂😂 Bill not realizing what he was doing was illegal and just incriminating himself after years of promoting FanDuel from California is downright hilarious and almost impossible to believe
The Ringer founder Bill Simmons allegedly made $21,800 in proxy bets through FanDuel using his daughter’s boyfriend in Massachusetts. State regulators are investigating the 22 wagers and plan to hold a hearing on how FanDuel handled the situation. Via @Covers | ow.ly/NuHi5104vz4

This article was fascinating. Apparently there is a huge cohort of women in their late 30s who are still fuming over the grave injustice of that one time, in primary school, when somebody made them read a book geared towards what boys like. Because remember, if boys like it, then it isn’t really a book.

"Girl protagonists outnumbered boys by a ratio of 2 to 1." That's only the start. When's the last time traditional publishing published a book where a boy was allowed to be a hero and an adventurer? Not since 2016. That's why the kids today are consuming the same books as when I was a kid.

"It was just a sad boy in the woods with no plot" - Slate's Senior Managing Editor on the beloved boy's book Hatchet. "Nothing really happens," - My Husband after we watch Jane Eyre (2011). There's a little thing called target demographic. Some people are more likely to enjoy a piece than others based on its inherent characteristics. The point in introducing people to books and media outside of their target demographic is to inspire empathy and understanding. It's not my Husband's job to study literary merit. He works IT. But he's cracking into Dune and we're having fun talks about it. It's a little telling that the Senior Editor of Slate (who makes her living in the literary world) reads about a 13 year old boy starve and nearly die multiple times and she thinks he's just sad.

The ballroom resonated REALLY strongly with the public. They were genuinely offended by Trump’s actions there, while the press was like, “this is all in good fun and I’m sure Americans in ohio diners are thanking Trump for bringing Class back to Washington”
I don't know why but it's still so wild to me that Beltway elites generally think the ballroom, Kennedy centre, etc stuff is a non-issue while it's clear this stuff broke through in s big way in Real America

I keep telling myself I'm gonna stop getting bogged down in these fights, but... "would be incels" is a ludicrously cruel and uncurious way to refer to children who dared to enjoy a book you didn't care for.
