I started a company earlier this year. Not ready yet to say exactly what we're doing, but I want to share some thoughts about why. The first in a series, The Small Internet: fic.us/writing/the-small-int…
Everyone is an eng manager now, like it or not. Doing the job the old-fashioned way quickly teaches you that people you can't trust are vampires on your time and attention. It does sometimes feel like I'm running a 10-legged race with a bunch of vampires.

Feels like we are in an uncanny valley right now: the only structural solution is moving up a level of abstraction, but the agents are not good enough yet to actually allow you to do it, "factory" influencers be damned.
The number of people I've seen quoting this post and attributing her opinion to "people in San Francisco" or "tech bros" (lol) couldn't be a more perfect encapsulation of the film's main theme.
New: Accenture has told employees it will only fund $29 per month of Claude use. Meaning that employees who often spend as much as $1,000 a month are now scrambling to find ways to keep access to the tool. A sign of the continuing crack down of AI 404media.co/accenture-tells-…
I'm going to give a short talk on the evolution of architecture - both kinds - on Nov 4. If you're in SF, come hang out!
We're getting the blackboard out again on November 4th. Here's who's teaching this time:
@aidenybai on how React actually works, rebuilt from scratch
@ficus on what microwaves, breakers, and Android permissions have in common
@rohankumar on why quantum computing has been “ten years away” for decades
Doors open at 6:30pm. Drinking in class is encouraged.
One of my favorite PMs at Meta taught me a great phrase he learned from an old boss at Microsoft:
"Don't bring me any watermelons."
"What's a watermelon?"
"It's something that looks green, but when I cut into it, it's red."
Decision models seem to have backed into a kind of ranking hack: they are so profoundly cheap that the OpenRouter models page is dominated by them. A token is not just a token :)
I don’t know whether this is true or not, but it reminds me of Tom Perrotta’s 2011 novel “The Leftovers”, in which a religious cult smokes incessantly in public to signify that the world has already ended, the future is meaningless, and concern for one’s health is absurd.
Palantir CTO reveals AI researchers are taking up smoking to signal to other researchers that they believe AI will cure cancer--and calls it a “mass psychosis”
Shyam Sankar (CTO): “But if you understand that it’s actually a theological critique, then you can kind of weigh it against the empirical facts of what is actually happening out there.
“I think there’s a profound truth to Pascal’s saying that every human has a God-shaped hole in their heart. And it’s important to understand that many of these folks in Silicon Valley who are building this technology have filled that hole with the machine god of AGI.
“And I mean, there’s so many interesting stories around this. For example, so many AI researchers have started smoking as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI.”
Margaret Brennan: “What? That makes no sense. What do you think?”
Shyam Sankar: “I believe so much in AI that it’s going to cure cancer. So I’m showing you my chips are all in. So there is kind of this mass psychosis, social delusion around it.”

Breaking news: The firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be live-streamed, the Defense Department said.
“People need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said. wapo.st/4hNxK0C
“Unlike many people, I don’t know the future” is an extremely concise summation of a lot of my worldview

Factories may very well be the future. (Unlike many people, I don't know the future!) But 500,000 words of Markdown, where the team's policy is "why would you read the markdown when it's for agents?"... that looks like "computer go brrrr", not like engineering.
