I reread this every year. I cry like a baby every year. Todd Beamer died a father, husband, and hero. Todd: Hello… Operator… listen to me. I can’t speak very loud. This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco. Our plane has been hijacked. Lisa: I understand. Can they see you? Todd: No. There are three that we know of. They have knives — razor knives, like box cutters. Someone announced from the cockpit there was a bomb. It sounded fake. Lisa: Your name?Todd: Todd Beamer. United Flight 93.Todd: They killed one passenger in first class. They forced most of us back. Fourteen of us here. Five flight attendants. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor. Lisa: Are you okay? Todd: We’re going down… wait. No. We’re leveling off. We changed directions. We’re flying east again. Todd: A guy named Jeremy called his wife. She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true? Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It’s very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I’m afraid your plane may be part of their plan. Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you’ll call. Lisa: I promise. Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We’ve been married ten years. She’s pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I’ll always love her. We have two boys — David, he’s 3, and Andrew, he’s 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy. Lisa: I’ll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.) Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol. Todd: I understand. I’ll be back. Todd: Everyone knows this isn’t a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot. Lisa: What are you going to do? Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We’ll take them out. Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray the Lord’s Prayer. Then: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Todd: God help me. Jesus help me.Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll.

For decades the pursuit of the world’s fourteen eight-thousanders was measured in years. Then Nimsdai reduced that timeline to months and shattered the limits of what people believed possible. Some of his Records were broken, but something greater also changed: young climbers and ordinary dreamers began to see the impossible as a challenge they could one day face themselves. He is a trendsetter of modern mountaineering who redefined speed, style, and ambition in high-altitude mountaineering. One of the moments that best captured Nimsdai’s spirit came in 2021, during the historic first winter ascent of K2. He and nine fellow Nepali climbers waited just below the summit, joined together and stepped onto the top as one team while singing Nepal’s national anthem. Nims climbed without supplementary oxygen. It was more than a summit, it was a powerful declaration of Nepali courage, unity and pride that will never be forgotten. Beyond records and summits, Nims never forgot the people who carried the weight of mountaineering far from the spotlight. He repeatedly recognised the porters and support staff whose strength and sacrifice make Himalayan expeditions possible. The Porter House in Lobuche stands as a lasting expression of that respect. He also revealed to the world the extraordinary skill, dignity, and courage of Nepali climbers, qualities that have too often been overlooked or forgotten in commercial high-altitude expeditions. Nims lived boldly and dreamed beyond accepted limits. He made the world understand that Nepali climbers were not supporting characters, they were the heroes of their own stories. Everest Today extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates and everyone whose life he touched. Rest in peace, Nimsdai. ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ!

A group of high schoolers in 1964 go see the Beatles. They didn’t get into the concert but while driving, Ringo pulled up beside them and snapped a photo. No one believed them. 50 years later, Ringo publishes his book of photos and they were in it! The “kids” reenacted the shot!

As you watch Aaron Rai in the PGA Championship, you might notice he uses iron covers for his clubs and wears two gloves — two habits often viewed as golf faux pas. But both are actually inspiring. Rai grew up in a working-class family in England, where his father sacrificed heavily to support his golf career. When Aaron got an expensive set of irons as a kid, his dad would clean every groove with a pin and baby oil after practice because the clubs meant that much to them. The iron covers became a reminder to appreciate what you have. And the two gloves? Rai started wearing them as a kid during cold-weather golf in England and eventually became so comfortable with the feel that he never stopped. Not gimmicks. Just gratitude… and comfort.

For years, Rudy Gobert didn’t get to sit at the NBA cool kids’ table at lunch. He played on. Now, matched up anew vs. the league’s greatest active offensive big man, there’s no denying the Timberwolves center’s impact on winning. Who’s snickering now? nba.com/news/rudy-gobert-shi…

31 players defended 200+ isolations this year. Rudy Gobert ranked #1, allowing 0.77 points per iso. Evan Mobley was 3rd & Bam Adebayo was 5th to give some context for the company he's in. Gobert a more complete, dominant defender now than when he won his 3 DPOY in '18, '19 & '21.
Chris Finch said he thinks it's a joke that Rudy Gobert was not even named as a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year this season. Gobert was asked after the game if that snub gave him more juice in tonight's game. "No extra juice. I know who I am. Not the first time I get disrespected, probably not the last. I'm gonna keep being myself. If they wanna disrespect greatness, take it for granted, whatever, sooner or later they'll realize the impact."

When Ronald Read passed away in 2014, he left behind an $8 million fortune. This surprised everyone who knew him because he was a modest man, having spent much of his career as a gas station attendant. When Read passed away, the headline in The Wall Street Journal read, “Route to an $8 Million Portfolio Started With Frugal Living.” To be sure, thrift played an important role in building wealth for Mr. Read and others like him. But I don’t think that is the only explanation. In my view, thrift is just the superficial explanation. If we take a closer look, I believe another factor is equally important: Ronald Read was 92. If you save and invest regularly over that many decades, the fact is you don’t need to have a high income to amass a seven-figure net worth. You can’t control how long you will live, but you should always be aware of the power of time in building wealth. It's never too early to start saving, and no amount is too small.

In 1974, photographer Dan Jury, then 23, removed his 81-year-old great-grandfather Frank Tugend from a nursing home to care for him personally until his death. He and his brother Mark documented the experience in a raw and intimate photo book called Gramp, published in 1976. It sold over 100,000 copies and is credited with helping shift public conversation around death, dying, and elder care in America.

In December 2025, former US Senator @BenSasse announced that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. That's the primary topic for this @UncKnowledge conversation about mortality, faith, and what truly matters when time is short. Talking to host @P_M_Robinson, Sasse reflects on "redeeming the time"—holding ambition lightly, loving family more deliberately, and resisting the urge to make politics or professional success the center of life. The discussion also covers Sasse's thoughts on the failures of Congress; the dangers of a fragmented, attention-starved republic; the crisis of higher education; and the moral challenges of technological abundance. He speaks candidly and movingly about regret, forgiveness, prayer, and suffering—arguing that while death is a real enemy, it does not get the final word. Watch the full conversation on X:

"Non-Profit" just built a 40-unit affordable housing building in Humboldt Park Cost: $31.6 million, that's $790K per unit Their other development? $42.9 million for 64 units, $670K unit That's 104 units across two buildings for $74.5 million 400 people applied in 72 hours, 90% got turned away, the demand is massive If the goal is reducing displacement and keeping families in the neighborhood, $74.5 million buys A LOT of existing housing stock in Humboldt Park Rehab it. Rent it below market. House 3-4x the people One day we'll look back and see this system was built to reward the wrong people and not the people who needed it the most
