“The first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb, when it comes, find us doing sensible and human things -- praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts -- not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs.” — C.S. Lewis
I clicked on this without thinking, then heard three notes and realized that some things are not meant to be known and closed my computer
"The unexamined carrot is not worth purchasing."
many people who have recovered from chronic illnesses have spoken about how the pivotal moment in their healing was choosing to believe it was possible in the first place
I’ve noticed a certain psychological disposition among chronically ill people who are absolutely convinced that nothing they do could ever improve their health. I think the same patterns of thinking that lead them to believe improvement is impossible are what prevent them from recognizing or pursuing opportunities to change their circumstances. Learned helplessness easily becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
people want to see pelvic thrusts, shaken asses, hip gyrations on the dance floor. and sure do some cool shit with your hands too I guess idk
I'm just thinking out loud here, but do any of you have thoughts about whether there might be a sort of "hall of mirrors" thing that happens where people more and more stop engaging with source material directly and instead feed it to their preferred LLMs to figure out what to think about it? and in turn if this will cause people to start writing more for LLM's approval as a target audience / the meaningful metric of whether something is considered good or useful?
what will intellectual work look like in a post-literate society?
I've been saying this SAME thing. When @Andrey4Mir talks about "digital orality," I think this is what comes *next.* Software as speech/content.

Many of the things people buy are not about the product so much as they are about the story that comes with it; “this is how I would live if I had more free time” “this will give me the energy to be who I am supposed to be” etc
feels like everywhere you go these days people are trying to normalize something fucking crazy went into math and they said it’s time to normalize vectors now like where does it end man
I want this quote to be on every AP Art History syllabus in the country by 2028. I want to make AP Art History teachers and AP Art History students smile. I want my pound of flesh, my canonical tweet
