"Even in this past decade and a half, reliable descriptions of classroom lessons and surveys of teaching practices are tough to find. Sure, there are journalists who have gone into classrooms and reported what they saw.

students always enter classrooms with some useful prerequisite knowledge. Students formally studying the linear equation for the first time, for example, have had a variety of prior experiences and learning that prepare them for the “new” things they will encounter. #iTeachMath

If all we did was constructivist, inquiry-based learning, teachers would rightly push back, saying sometimes students require information/steps to succeed.
So why, when we're increasingly restricted to teacher-centered, explicit teaching, is it a problem to ask for some inquiry?
