maybe it's just me but in the past weeks my $200/month GPT Pro subscription has become incredibly slow, buggy, and so limited it's useless. $500/month is above my pain threshold so I guess I'll be switching to Claude and just hope it catches up on maths soon.

🚨🎙️ Roy Keane on Harry Kane winning the 2026 Ballon d'Or over Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal: "You know what? For once, I am actually enjoying an awards ceremony because we are finally seeing somebody who actually deserves taking that Ballon d'Or trophy home. No PR stunts, no nonsense publicity games—just pure, unadulterated football. This is what it actually means to put the work in and have the results do the talking. Did Mbappé and Yamal deserve to be in the conversation? Of course, the talent there is obvious. But if we are talking about who genuinely earned to be crowned the best in the world, it is Harry Kane. His standards never slipped, not for a single second. Look at what he has done for club and country this season. He went out, scored seventy-three goals in sixty-five appearances, including sixty-one in fifty-one games for Bayern Munich alone. He didn't just pad his stats; he delivered in the biggest moments, netting fourteen times in the Champions League and twelve more with England, including six at the World Cup to lead his nation to a bronze medal. He led Bayern to the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal. He has been an absolute machine. This is what I appreciate about the game. Hard work, relentless consistency, and leading from the front—not off the pitch, but on it. Harry Kane winning it tonight is football at its absolute truest." #BallonDor

I was invited to panel w/Zizek a few y ago. So I read 2 of his books & couldn't figure out what it was abt, so I declined. I now bitterly regret missing the occasion as I attended one of his lectures and althought I still understood nothing I found him playfull & mesmerizing.

Michael Levin (@drmichaellevin) says today's LLMs are "trapped in the same attractors of thinking that have held several fields back for decades." His point is about ideas. Here's a physics reading of the word, which is mine, not his. How long a pattern lasts and what it costs to hold are two different numbers. A frozen model's weights are a pit carved once by training. Nothing in the model's own dynamics pays to keep them; the storage does that. That is why the weights can't move on their own. A brain is closer to the opposite. Much of what it holds is paid for continuously, which is part of why it can drift, update, forget. So the escapes run backward. To move the weights you pay a barrier: new data, retraining. To move much of a brain's state you stop paying: cut the upkeep and a lot of it fades. Not all of it; some memory sits in structure. One word, attractor, two different physics. The divider is not how deep the well is. It is whether something keeps circulating underneath to hold it open. That is my framing of the old equilibrium vs non-equilibrium split (Prigogine; Seifert 2012), not a new law. Test it on anything said to last "for free": measure whether something circulates underneath. Zero circulation, it is a frozen pit. Nonzero, it is paying to last.

Mitch McConnell has just delivered a warning Trump cannot afford to ignore. In The Wall Street Journal, the veteran Republican senator warned that Trump’s continued submission to Putin could jeopardise his entire legislative agenda. McConnell calls Trump’s Russia policy strategically naive and morally bankrupt. More importantly, he signals that Republican senators may withhold their support unless Trump changes course. This is no longer merely about Ukraine. It is about whether Republicans will allow an American president to keep rewarding a Russian dictator while undermining America’s allies. For once, Trump may discover that Congress has a spine.

1/ Last month I told a room of Baltic intelligence officers and diplomats that Donald Trump is an asset of Russian intelligence. Not one of them blinked. "Of course," they said. Ho hum. But in America, saying it out loud is still taboo. Why? 🧵

"I don’t give a damn. We’re making a freaking fortune." There is no slogan more fitting for this White House.
TRUMP on HIGH GAS PRICES: We’re making money like we’ve never made before. They’ll say: President Trump is bragging about all the money they're making while people are suffering at the pump. I don’t give a damn. We’re making a freaking fortune.

I went to see the new Sense and Sensibility movie yesterday. In general, I was disappointed. They changed the story in a few key ways, the overall mood was gloomy, and the styling was awful. Much worse, though, Mr. Palmer was played by a “non-binary” woman. When the character came on the screen, my husband and I looked at each other in confusion. The styling was male, but the character had a weak voice, short stature, and effeminate appearance. I googled it mid-movie, and apparently the actress is Eliot Sumner, the daughter of singer Sting. As is always the case with this kind of casting, it was distracting and confusing and weakened the plot. Presumably because of the odd casting/choice, they gave Mr. Palmer a smaller role than usual. All the humor of his character was deleted. Fans of the 1995 version with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet might remember that the character was played by Hugh Laurie (famous as Dr. House). Laurie was perfect – droll and hilarious. Wokeism ruins everything it touches.

Everyone involved in this war, dare I say it, from both sides of the trenches, should read @terfdiarist - it’s an invaluable documentation of, as it turns out, only a fraction of the lunacy. But crystal clear examples of how insane it all became.

Nobel Prize winner Prof. Robinson describes #Somaliland as a compelling example of successful indigenous state-building. After receiving his Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his studies on how institutions are formed and how they affect prosperity, Professor James A. Robinson highlighted Somaliland's peace process and consensus-building during his Nobel lecture on December 8, 2024, at Stockholm University's Aula Magna. Prof. Robinson is the co-author of the acclaimed book Why Nations Fail, which explores how inclusive political and economic institutions drive long-term prosperity.
